@@DavidGarcia-re9qh Well, honestly, I'm always on guard for a tree's first year. Certainly they need to live through the heat of their first summer and the cold of their first winter before I will breathe a sigh of relief.

I’m in Kansas with clay soil as well and just planted 7 of these. I’m concerned that the landscaper planted them too deep in the hole as I’m noticing that some of the lower branches are covered. Do you think it’s worth digging them out 4 days post planting? I’m reading about how temperamental these trees are and nervous that the smallest thing will kill them…

Just purchased 6, excited for some privacy! How far from the trunk did y’all place them?

I think they are about 3.5 feet apart on center, if I remember correctly. Maybe 4 feet?

The plant info I have says they are hardy in zones 3-8, so you may be too warm, but give them a try!

We also have clay soil and I plan to keep them 3-4 inches above grade like you mentioned. How are they holding up and any other tips for very hard clay soil? I have planted these before and they died but I think it was because I planted them too deep and watered them too much

They're doing well a year later. Last year some limbs dried up, due to insufficient watering, I guess. I trimmed those out. This year no signs of drying up, so I'm hoping they're happier in their places.

Don't plant Emerald Green arbs if you have deer in your area, the deer will obliterate them.
If you do plant them, be careful to prevent multiple leaders from developing, otherwise they will split apart as they get larger.
Or, you can buy a better variety like Green Giant, Nigra or North Pole arbs depending on how much room you have and what you are trying to screen.

The deer (so far) have stayed outside our fence, so I'm hopeful that will continue.

How much gypsum are you adding to each hole?
