Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha hit the stage in Toronto at Luminato 2023. The opera fused classical music with the sounds of ragtime, folk, and gospel while following the story of a young Black woman who discovers her power to lead her community.
This beautiful solo, performed by Neema Bickersteth, marks the moment Treemonisha discovered the truth of her past, minutes before she was meant to be wed to a man she didn’t love. What followed was a journey of empowerment, love, and acceptance.
