They need to start giving Oscars for video games now. Seeing this behind the scenes gave me chills. Christopher Judge put his heart into this game
It would never be an Oscar, as the Academy only does films (and are fairly pretentious about it), they don't do TV shows even. But you're right that games are starting to need something more than the glorified advertisement that is the Video Game Awards.
In the UK, video games are eligible for BAFTA awards in their own entirely separate awards program, and it's legit. BAFTA is the same body that does their film and TV awards. This game actually won for Best Game of the year over there when it came out.

I feel kinda sorry for such a good story-telling and acting masterpiece couldn’t reach more audiences just because ppl will just see “it’s just a game” and not been taken seriously as a form of art. Both 4 and 5 are so fing amazing

@@Carnage7209 agree. One of the recent emotional moments i had in gaming was Mafia: Definitive Edition, the scene where Tommy proposes to Sarah. After the major mess up, shootout and chase, you get scene that is mostly silent, only few words are spoken by characters, but you feel every bit of emotion there. And the game makes you not just see or hear, but FEEL, understand on a deeper level why Tommy fell in love with Sarah: because she simply accepts his darkest side, while also not being soft pushover. Basically it shows that she will correct his course if needed, but without fundamentally and painfully changing him at his core.
And no movie could achieve that, because at the moment player is tired and frustrated from previous long shootout and chase, and from set goal not being achieved, we are confused not knowing WTF went wrong and how it will be resolved, and Sarah's reaction to Tommy's state is what decides our feeling to her. Will she add to said frustration by starting drama? Will she simply leave or "shut down", turning frustration to anger and/or sorrow? Or will she make that one little room the only safe place for Tommy to be in? And i'm glad writers steered off the beaten path of using those types of scene for drama (which is one of the oldest cliche's in stories) and instead used it for comfort.
Sometimes I think actors can be a bit pretentious when it comes to "the craft" but seeing this kind of proves me wrong. He clearly tapped into something there, like you could see it underneath his skin. His body language, everything changed. You could really feel his intensity. Job amazingly well done.
It's crazy when you realize they're people. People that choose to portray other people. And I think what gives life to these performances is that they pour so much of themselves into these characters to give them life. And you lose yourself a little when you do that.

@@HyperspaceCafe I realized not that long ago from seeing making of stuff like this that acting is not about pretending to be someone else and faking emotions. Acting is about using personal experience to bring those emotions out. In this scene and from what Christopher Judge says, he was thinking of his kids and his father role during that scene. Thinking of his choice of work that puts him away from his kids for long periods of times but a work he does to give them a better life as well. He's not faking those emotions.
@@chamoo232 indeed. As an actor (though certainly not one of this level) I can tell you that's right. You always bring bits of yourself to the character, real bits that do affect you in the way they're supposed to. I can't blame people for thinking method acting is stupid when there's stupid actors just doing asshole-y stuff pretending it's method acting. But true method actores like Judge know, you gotta be honest and bring your true feelings into the performance. People know when it's real, and they especially know when it's fake.
Yeah man, the pretentious shit you're talking about come from when actors portray characters that are sad or broken in some way when in reality the human playing them has been pampered their whole life and hasnt been through any hardship. It's like when people who havent been through shit enter the rap game

I think the role of Kratos is something everyone can relate to. I don’t want to speak for Christopher Judge but I remember first going through that part of the game. Everyone has a past and we don’t forgive ourselves for it, and then you have a child, you want to do everything that’s best for them. You have to dig up everything that you have been forgetting, just to make sure they are ok

As good as that would have been I think if anything happens to Atreus that'll be what brings it out and it'll mean that much more just cause it hasnt happened yet.
I don't think we're ready to see Kratos shed a tear. Not yet. I think it should happen, and when it does it'll be perfect, but he's so hard. So cold. So stone-carved. I feel like this broke one of the seals. If he shed a tear here, it may have been impactful, but not nearly as much as it will be when we see what finally does kind of "break" him.

The hole chapter of getting the Blades was THE moment of the game, travelling with the boat, the silence moment of Kratos, it was so powerful! Great game! Best!
That moment of silence was so amazing, you could understand how Kratos was feeling, the anxiety, how nervous he was, all with simple camera takes and amazing acting!
The first time I played I almost cried when the boy got sick, then he went home and got the blades and I was so excited
@@CornholioPuppetMaster you almost cried?? i couldn't hold back, when he got on the boat to head home, the setup was too dark, and i knew what he was going to do. i was crying tears of excitement, of anticipation and nostalgia. (not straight up ugly sobbing, but i just couldn't stop tears the scene was so emotional)
Also the music.
Being an almost 40yr old father of a small child, I cried a few times playing this story.
Seeing the impact it had on Chris just makes it more.

Looking at CHristohpers Judges' performance when he said 'I know". Seeing him doing it out of Mocap and actually seeing his performance, it had a lot more emotion than in-game, even his voice cracked, whereas the game it only slightly did. This shit was heavy, powerful, and I loved it
The fact that he had that kind of emotion while wearing that suit with a camera in his face, not seeing a single thing that is happening and just hearing his co actresses voice unfiltered, is amazing.
that is a man putting his heart and soul into the role.

Wow. Didn’t realize how deep the emotions were for him. It sure came out as a phenomenal performance. He was right, getting the Blades of Chaos was The Moment for me too. (Edit: Made a mistake and called them Blades of Mercy since I was playing a lot of Bloodborne when I first made the post.)

As a father, this game beat me up emotionally and playing through it definitely stirred up so many thoughts and memories. Seeing Kratos in this light, and being at a similar place in mine and my kids' lives, it was difficult not to see and feel everything he was going through and directly compare it to my life. It's made so much more powerful when you see that the actual actor playing Kratos was so affected by the incredible power of this story. I was skeptical when I saw they replaced the original voice actor, but this man showed us depths to Kratos that I wouldn't have thought existed, but always hoped for. There were so many times throughout the game when I didn't actually know who I sympathized with more, Kratos or Atreus, and playing it with my son made the experience so much more rewarding. I absolutely adore this game, and this cast and I'm so grateful for the feeling and emotional depth they gave us in these characters, despite their own personal struggles. It truly felt like a love letter to all of us. Absolutely beautiful, and we're all dying for the sequel!!
"A lot of this to me...is a love letter to my kids." That hits so hard when I look at what I wish to teach my two boys. I've always heard from my parents that they wished to provide me what they didn't growing up. Life and wisdom has taught me differently. I wish to 'teach' my children what I wasn't taught. There's SO much to life and it's my duty to prepare them for what's to come.
Thank you, Chris Judge, for your performance. I only pray that your children are as proud of your performance as mine are.
I agree completely. Lessons taught are ultimately far more valuable for a father to pass down than any material thing you could give them. Every father should ask himself, "Do I want my kids to simply have more, or to BE more?"
When he mentions that it is an apology as well he’s referring to his time on the Stargate TV series. He was working insane hours for many years(that series went for about 10 seasons) and missed a lot of their growing up. He mentions it in another part of the documentary.
He also mentions that this was an experience he wanted to share with his kids. It’s something they could celebrate with him.
He’s a great actor. I loved him as T’ilk in Stargate and he was perfect as Kratos.
@@makasete30 That's great context, thank you. I never got into the SG series, but new he was on there for quite some time. I can sympathize with the extreme emotion of being away from your children/family due to work. One of the many reasons I decided to leave the military was because my son was scared of me when I got back from my most recent deployment.
And I do also think he was the perfect choice to voice act Kratos.
Despite not being part of the original games, judge manages to make it feel like he has always been part of the franchise through his acting.
well, he did play the previous GoW games so he's kinda have been part of the franchise, but as a consumer (until know)

god damn what an amazing performance, for me the shakyness of the "I know" hit deep and it now hits even deeper when you see just how much cristopher meant it in his own way. just the words as kratos digs up his past to save his child. so many layers to this onion, may be why tears started to shed for me

Cory Barlog said the idea for this game came when he himself became a father. So between him and Chris Judge here, no wonder the parental message and power comes through so strong.
I lost my dad to cancer in 2017 and Playing this game for the first time it was like the game was letting me play through how I was feeling losing my dad and how much anger i had in my grief. He’s been gone almost five years and still this scene and game is still hard for me to play. I’ve beaten it many times. Can’t wait for Ragnarok.
He is not just acting for that role he is living with that role from his heart
I can't remember the last time a game made me as emotional as this did. Even when Kratos talked to Freya about getting the blades, I was excited because I thought they were completely gone. But his last words to Athena still gives me chills, even after reading someone quoting it in the comments here. And seeing Christopher feeling that makes the scene as a whole even more powerful.
That scene more than anything in the game drove home the resolution that Kratos has become an entirely different man/god than he was before. The "I am your monster no longer" followed by the build up of him walking somewhat menacingly towards Athena, only to have that subverted by him walking right through her and letting it go... All I can say is, old Kratos could NEVER

At 1:48 his tear drops
Every time i get to this part i always make sure to get right up to the screen and watch every detail. From the moment magni trigger atreus, up until kratos walks out of his house with the blades. I make sure to turn my sound up, and remove any other distractions. The music, ambience, acting... literally everything in this part is perfection. The entire game is really. But this part is by far the best.
I swear when Athena said "father" and Kratos quickly looked at her, that shit hit hard. Just that one quick motion was enough to make me feel all the emotions he felt hearing that.
You can see he really connected with the character
One of the most epic scenes in gaming history. And Judge's performance is a big reason for that.
This scene makes me cry too. This big strong man trying his hardest to change and be better. Then you have her saying you will always be a monster, youll never change, it hits home for me too.
I like how when Athena taunts him with everything she thinks he cannot be he is unfazed by all of it except one. Teacher? Nah, he doesn't flinch. Husband? Nothing. Father? Now she struck a nerve, made him stop for a second and look at her. THAT shows to me what Kratos wants to be first and foremost. A father to Atreus. He's not afraid that his past will prevent him from being a good teacher, from being a good husband. He's afraid his past will prevent him from being a good father to his son, because his son means everything to him.
And that's kind of the theme of this game, you can see it in so many scenes. He's strict to Atreus, because he loves him so much, he wants him to be strong. When Atreus kills that deer Kratos was about to pat Atreus on the back like "good boy". He was proud of his son at that moment but didn't know how to show it. Uncertain if he should be more soft with him. He then decided to not show it, possibly out of fear it might send the wrong message, make Atreus stop learning. Throughout the game Kratos learns as much about being a father through Atreus and Freya than Atreus does from Kratos about how to fight and be a god.
I love this game. A true masterpiece.
What the hell, Judge's delivery on that: "I know..." Was way better than what we heard in the final version of the game

Dude really immerses himself even when he's wearing nothing but mocap and seeing nothing from the actual game while acting. Insanely skilled people man...
I didn't actually play this game until long after it came out, way after the hype and everyone else had already played it. It took me a while to go through it because I myself had recently had a child and was busy with that. I, like a lot of us, have some dark moments in my past and memories I'd have rather kept buried but this game and especially this scene made me go back to those places. This game made me face every doubt I had in myself being able to be a father, made me see things in myself I otherwise might not have, made me realize I could be a good father despite what I've been through. Whoever says "it's just a game" needs to look at scenes like this. Games like these really are art.
That's why I love to see performances where the actor really immerses themselves into the role and moreso become the character they're playing. It makes for memorable moments that's hard to compare.

The emotional severity of this scene was so intense its literally digging up the past he so desperately needed to escape from not just wanted to but for the sake of living a normal existence to go from child thrust into the life of a warrior to god killer to god himself finding out you were born half god anyway and killing his entire family literally not figuratively then attempt to be a simple man to put that in perspective is daunting
So hyped for Ragnarok. This Kratos really gives me the chills.
Playing the 2018 reboot was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had in my life especially during the hard times I was going through in that year, and suddenly this game came and changed my life. There are some twists in video games stories that I'll never forget: The Bioshock trilogy, Silent Hill 2, Rule of Rose, RDR2, and definitely GoW 2018 precisely this scene and scattering the ashes scene accompanied with Bear McCreary great music that gave profound emotions to the story of this game. Honestly I can't wait to play the second installment of this beautiful game.

the blades of chaos scene was the most iconic and touching scene in the game other than maybe when he lets himself free in the jotunhiem cus those blades were like binds for him but those binds were also the ones that held him up when is about to fall in all the other parts
Christopher Judge put so much into Kratos, that he even tears up when he says "I know." He cares for the character and when he acts, he's truly immersed as the God of War.

For Christopher Judge to have actually started tearing up at the return of the Blades of Chaos, that shows just how much impact those things have had on this franchise and what it means to people. Those blades carry with them a legacy that spans close to two decades of the gaming culture, and if they were going to be brought back then they needed to be honored in a way that would highlight the trauma Kratos feels when he wears them, and a reminder of a past that he has spent years trying to run away from. And having Athena there judging him the entire time, and I bet she was proud of the fact that her monster has returned to wreak havoc on the realm of the gods once again, there’s a reason you tear up in this moment.
But he didn't have emotions over the blades of chaos. Christopher Judge was thinking of his own shortcomings as a father, he said so in Raising Kratos. You should check it out.
It wasn't because of the Blades of Chaos. He literally said it's because of his decisions and mistakes he's made as a father. The pure emotion in the moment of the scene is about how Kratos has made mistakes that led to his son, Atreus, to fall ill. Christopher Judge immerses himself in that moment and thinks about if it was his own children in that position because of HIS actions. That's why he sheds a tear.

I love seeing how actors do their thing. When you watch the finished work it looks easy because they make it look easy. It's in behind the scenes videos like this that you see a bit of how much work they put it

Chris Judge is a amazing actor. He made the game amazingly real in this scene and we as player with alway be grateful to him for it.
Man, I wasnt super thrilled with them recasting Kyle from Living single but, Damn, This performance just goes to show how passionately Chris was about this character. He definitely wasn't just mailing it in. He really Did his work this is amazing.
A powerful performance by a man who puts his all into his craft. Knowing the point of his acting for this game, makes me appreciate the work he put into it and enjoy this game even more. We need more people like that... How I wish I could create a game that way.

The part when Kratos goes to Freya for help when Atreus falls ill. Being a father that gets me ever time! Feeling helpless when your child is sick and looking for help. Christopher Judge really brought that emotion to life!
For him to take a game series that is so near and dear to my heart, and to take it this seriously? He has ALL of my respect.
This scene was so raw. It took god of war beyond just a fantastic game. It took us into the world of kratos and made us finally feel more for a character that was finally getting some redemption. Just amazing.

My mans basically channeled the energy of an entire franchise of games he didn't even voiced in just to put him in that zone and mindset of how important this scene is, what an absolute legend, like he's been Kratos all his life just waiting for this moment right here. Being a huge Chris fan since Stargate SG-1 days I was so thrilled to see how his take on Kratos would turn out when they announced it, while still being a bit sad for the recasting of the original VA actor and my God.... this man brought so much of his personal feelings into this role.
I just can't imagine how stressful and overwhelming everything had to be for him, every award and praise that he got for this role and for the sequel was absolutely well deserved.
