- We got four baby goats. What started as a wonderful day soon turned into 5 straight days of pure sadness.

We bought a wife for him. She’s two years older than him and (allegedly) pregnant. Masala is quarantined outside at the moment, and they’ll be able to meet soon. Pictures of her are on our Facebook and Instagram.

Goats have a steep learning curve. One thing I learned the hard way is DO NOT OVERFEED MILK especially on day 1-3. They need 10% of their bodyweight in colostrum on day one. From day 2 onward give them more feedings but make sure to weigh kids to determine how much milk they need per the breed recommendations. If you overfeed, and they cannot digest the milk quickly enough they get overgrowth of bacteria and don’t tend to do well. The one kid I think I killed via overfeeding became “floppy” and less responsive, had trouble walking like you showed. I tried to give her baking soda to balance ph in her gut but I think it was too late, or she died of something else… Sometimes you just get unlucky and their little hearts or other internals aren’t quite developed enough. Hopefully you can get a few nice friends for your little kid. Never buy from auction/cheap goats if you want to keep the goats/a disease free herd. Auctions are used by inexperienced goat owners to obtain animals that other people need to get rid of. I bought a doe as a “package deal” once with two other, healthier does, and I couldn’t save her. She was weak, thin, an emotional ordeal I didn’t have to go through, medicine 8 shouldn’t have needed, and a risk to my other animals in general. Hopefully she didn’t give them Johne’s or something, we will be testing our herd for that this year. Goat parasites live in the ground for a while, as does Johnes. CAE you can stop the spread by keeping general cleanliness and bottlefeeding the kids clean/tested milk, but other caprine illnesses are easily spread and you don’t want them on your farm.
