    Dr. Manhattan can't simply see the past and future, he sees his OWN past, and his OWN future. He makes that very clear in the film. He would have had no idea that Rorschach wrote and submitted that journal for publishing.

      It's fine to create a film that tells a story through a visual collage, but there's a level of coherency that has to come with it. Some of my favorite films have little details through visuals that I didn't notice, but have a straightforward story you can connect with. Batman v Superman is a film composed only of details and not much else. In that regard, they're not really details, they're just...tails. It's hard to explain, but it mainly has something to do with the jarring editing.

    • @m3gadinum8
      @m3gadinum8 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      2deepy what jarring editing? if you're talking about theatrical cut then its a cut where he tried to squeeze in as many details as possible. For me the edits didn't matter because I myself from the story and visuals could put every piece of the puzzle on my own and understand the movie. But most people who didn't loved the Ultimate Cut

    • @2deepy
      @2deepy 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Danny Guy Many people said that they had to view it multiple times to put those pieces together. I'm not saying you had to. If not, then excellent on your part. But a film that seems to rely on people to mentally put together a huge puzzle as the film is going on won't make for an overly cohesive one. Some of the greatest films of all time have a plethora of complex details that don't hinge on the audience finding them, as they have a straightforward story to be on the surface. That's how I usually view stories in general. The surface, with story, acting, directing, etc. And then there's the depths, with themes, motifs, etc. A film should have both, not just the latter. It seems as though the ultimate edition accomplished that, but not the movie that was cut down and released to theaters.

    • @m3gadinum8
      @m3gadinum8 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      2deepy Because the ultimate version is the real movie he wanted to tell. Theatrical version he made it for the fans to understand. Which is a bad idea but they did it anyway. And still love both versions.

    I think Snyder's focus is on creating iconic still images. Since Watchmen he chooses to shoot single camera despite how time consuming this is. He does this because he wants every shot to have the best composition possible. I also think this is why he uses Slow Mo so much. He really wants his images to stick in the audience's head.

      LMAO! BvS was the "number one bestseller in bluray and DVD" because it was paid DLC for the movie since you had to watch it if you wanted to see the full movie they released in theater. It didn't make almost 400 million. It made almost 900M but that is trivial when you learn they spend 250M on the budget, another 200-250M on the marketing and that the theater takes 1/3 of the gross. Not to mention that this movie, a movie with 2 of the biggest superheroes Batman and Superman should've easily break a billion dollar mark and was supposed to make The Avengers type money of around 1.5B. 65% on RT is not "comfortable majority" because not everyone who has seen the movie actually voted there. The reception of BvS was very split with majority of people disliking it which eventually led to Zack Snyder being fired from Justice League.

I respect your opinion but bout time you got to your "good" the video was almost over and I was writing this. I thought this was suppose to be a informative video? Yes you briefly spoke about techniques he uses but it was smothered by your opinion like an over use of gravy that's if this was suppose to be informative for film makers looking to grow and learn. Comments like this wouldn’t exist if the title was “my take on ZS’s style” or “Zack Snyder’s Direction Analysis”. I personally really like it, I find it interesting and immediately recognizable, but I get it’s not for everyone and you’re allowed to not like it. The title is just alluding to something more objective.

    Excellent video and all valid points on Snyder's directing. He is by far the greatest visual director we have today. He consistently has jaw-dropping visuals in all of his movies.
    I do believe his story telling and characters usually have some issues, but that's because he's not about telling a story as much as he is about playing with themes. Watchmen isn't a story as much as it is a commentary on superheroes, justice, and good vs evil. He breaks down the idea of a good-guy who does "all good" because the real world is much more complicated than that.
    He also shows us how superheroes would really be, instead of these non-stop justice machines they are people with insecurities, needs, complex relationships, and emotional faults.
    When I see a Snyder film I open my mind to try and catch the big picture, to understand what he's trying to tell me about something that's important. My discussions with friends about his films usually revolve around themes.

    • @LordoftheStrings109
      @LordoftheStrings109 8 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Great observation. I would agree with you that he puts a big emphasis on thematic elements, which is something I really enjoy. I don't like throwing the word around because a lot of people (who probably don't know what it actually means and just think its a pretentious buzzword) get triggered for some reason, but it really does feel like post-modern storytelling. There's more of a focus on symbolism and big themes than continuity or straightforwardness. Does this mean you have to like this style? No, but I wish more people would be open to the fact that there might actually be a reason people like his movies besides "explosions and slow mo."

    • @LemosArt0987
      @LemosArt0987 8 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Ian Levinson I agree, Bay's movies are fun in their own way but they rarely if ever deal with themes like most Snyder films do.
      Also Snyder has a visual style that's very distinctive, he's one of the few directors that I can point to a scene in a movie and say that looks like a Snyder film. I love his style, visuals, and the way he tells stories that are less focused on narrative and more on themes.
      But hey, to each their own. I let people like what they like and don't allow others thoughts to influence what I should like.

    • @LemosArt0987
      @LemosArt0987 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lucas M. So true!! I've accepted that maybe Snyder's style isn't for everyone and I'm more than fine enjoying something that a majority of people are not into.

      @Rex67Diego9 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      that would be true if you weren't actually wrong about watchmen
      watchmen is a story about many characters that are really fucked up, watchmen is about saying how sad and pathetic their attempts of being superheros is, or just to fitt in society, thats why it destroys the superhero gendre. you think that writers and artists made such a long novel just to make a simple commentary on superheros?
      the novel main focus was in the characters, to see how the characters deal with their stuff, and like this you see how fucked up they are, the novel is about substance, completely opposite to the movie
      but that is not at all in the movie because, snyder was too busy making them kick ass, or making too graphic blood explotions here and there, or animating a giant blue penis.
      this movie never once mocked heros, cause at the end, the watchmen stayed as heros, he completely lost the essence of the novel
      now as only a movie it is boring, the overuse of slowmotion makes it tireing, its really hard to follow when the story doesn't make sense, and the characters are completely characterless, watchmen wasn't for him to direct, well actually nothing is, he could direct a linkin park music video or perfume commercials not movies.

    Not trying to defend BVS (because I personally am not a huge fan of the movie) but Lex did explain why he hates Superman. It's more of he hates God, or anything that resembles God due to the way he was treated as a child from his father. "No man in the sky intervened to deliver me from daddy's fists and abominations." He hates God because he feels that God never helped him when he needed him, now since Superman is the closest thing to God that there is, he already has built in hate. He wants to take it out on God and that's why he wants to kill Superman.

    • @Axterix13
      @Axterix13 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't think it is so much that he blames God as that he doesn't believe true goodness can exist. It does relate to his father and the beatings he got as a child, but comes from his father being praised as being a good person, while all the time Lex was being abused. So he's out to prove that Superman isn't a boy scout, this paragon of goodness, by making him kill another hero, to validate and justify his worldview.
      It essentially makes Lex Snyder in terms of his views of Superman, as Snyder doesn't buy into the Superman as "the boy scout" ideal either.

    What I like about Zack is his ability to add in different perspectives in a real and meaningful way. It feels like all of the characters have their own personalities and make their own decisions, right or wrong, based on their OWN beliefs under those circumstances. This is what people fail to grasp. A big problem that confuses people is that they themselves wouldn't do something in some way so it seems implausible that someone else would.
    I also enjoy how he adds fun along with depth. It's like playing in the ocean; you put your head under the water but have to come back up eventually. I think that's why he tries to remind people that it's just a movie and not to always take things too seriously. I also find interesting his use of dramatic irony, using certain visual cues to give information to the audience which the characters wouldn't be able to see. He really uses the medium to its fullest potential.

    the examples you gave were extremely bad on his supposed lack of character motivation, lex's motive was clear, it was philosophical which apparently a lot of people simply dont understand. it was the notion of a powerful being being worshiped as a deity. people like you need literal but really boring motivations like "oh he wants ultimate power"or "he wants to make a lot of money" etc... try to think about the movie next time before blaming it on the filmmakers. sometimes and often is the case with snyder's films, the fault lies with the viewer thinking too small.

    5:55 I have to respectfully disagree with that statement.
    Personally i don't think that movies always have to immerse you in a realistic sense, just look at Tokusatsu, or the French new wave, those types of movies often tried to remind the viewers that they were watching a movie, either through obviously miniature buildings or odd editing styles. It depends on the type of movie you want to make. It really comes down to substance though. If a movie has at least SOME substance, then it Doesn't need to be "realistically" immersive for it to be good. Of course there's also good writing, acting, directing, etc, to consider in addition to cinematography, but you get my point.

      I like your videos, it shows you have knowledge of film, and I learn from them. I'm a film student, and future Film director, and I like Snyder, he inspired me just like the other directors you analyzed. But one of his problems, like other directors, which shows their lack of knowledge of film. Is the script, and the way they shoot. A lot of these directors came from making music videos and commercials. So they have no knowledge of filmmaking. Some directors believe film school is unnecessary. There the reason why films use horrible scripts, that are shot incorrectly. Since we're talking about Snyder, I'll use him as an example. Because Snyder has no knowledge of film, he has no knowledge of screenwriting. His films use scripts with no character development, incoherent plots, and action driven stories without character purpose. Then they are shot without the the image and the camera telling the story. Every shot is for style with no connection to the story or characters. One of the problems I have with Snyder's style, that you didn't speak of, is the fact that his shots are mostly still shots, there is no camera movement. For me that makes his camera direction dull. The camera should tell and be a part of the story as much as the characters. As a film student, studying film enables me to understand screenwriting and how the world, story, characters, drama, and action go together to make cinema. And how the camera brings the images inspired by the script to life. Film is about stories with characters who take you on a journey and change your life forever. As a film student now, and future Film director, studying film will enable me to change lifes and inspire the future. I would like to see you analyse Christopher Nolan, a great director in my opinion.

    "Can you tell me why Lex Luthor wants Superman dead?" ...... Yes. I can. And Lex tells the audience several times.
    This is the problem I run into with Snyder naysayers: they believe that his film is style over substance; his stories are thin. No, they aren't. You are getting caught up in the visuals and are missing clear dialogue.
    This is a great example: Lex clearly tells Clark why he can't abide his existence. Because of his childhood, his suffering at his father's hands, he has a skewed perception of good and evil. His father was evil but the world hailed him as a god among men. Lex has cultivated his own Godlike status and Superman presents a direct conflict to his goals of power and control. "And now, god bends to my will.."
    Lex doesn't believe that Superman can be all good and he intends to show, "the holes on the holy." Either he kills god and proves that God isn't all powerful or he gets God to kill and proves that he isn't all good.
    Simply put: Lex fears Superman and the loss of his own power. "That's how it starts, sir.
    The fever. The rage. The feeling of powerlessness that turns good men.. cruel." Powerlessness is the central theme for the male leads (women and motherly love being the saving grace). And the movie clearly shows how each character handles their own powerlessness.
    Edit: Zack Snyder is dyslexic and it was a struggle for him growing up. So he speaks heavily with visuals which is what drew me to his work. He wants the audience to see the story, not just hear it. This is one reason why he draws out every frame of his movies beforehand

    Zack Snyder, divisive as he may be, is a great director. For me anyway. I appreciate that he doesn't choose to have long 'word dump' scenes where characters are telling each other the story. For the most part, if it's important to the main narrative of the film, he takes us with the characters as they experience what happens in the story. Many other great directors do this. I don't understand why they are praised for doing it but Snyder isn't. Sure, most of his films tend to be very strong in the visuals but that does not mean they are lacking in storytelling. I would say that the visuals are a way that he tells the story. Especially in the film that people seem to hate most by him, Sucker Punch. His 'style' is to tell the story with the visuals.

    ZACK SNYDER JUSTICE LEAGUE

  • @MayankMekala2
    @MayankMekala2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Lex hates Superman because Lex was abused by his father and he blamed God for not helping him.
    "No man in the sky intervened to deliver me from daddy's fists and abominations."
    That is why he has a hatred for Superman. God represents Good but Lex was never saved by God. He realizes God cannot be all good.
    "Good is all-powerful. He cannot be all good."
    He wanted to prove to the world that God isn't all good. He wanted to defeat a Godlike being to avenge his past. He wanted to prove that God is not good. But superman is good. He tries to be good.
    Honestly, I don't understand the film's hate. Sure, something was exaggerated and it tried too hard to be philosophical but at least it TRIED to be compelling. It was more thought-provoking than compelling than movies like Justice League. Maybe some motivation was lacking sure, but it wasn't all about that. There was a lot of good this film also had. The visuals, action choreography, the music, the costumes, the performances, and the debate over Superman. I think he did a great job of making us question what it is like to be a God-like being in the contemporary world and also making a fearsome vigilante who is at the end of his emotional attachment to anyone.
    People just don't understand the film. Everything needs to be spoon-fed to modern audiences.
    Example: the infamous Martha scene.
    people really thought that Batman spared Superman because their mom's had the same name. Really?
    Batman spares Superman because, throughout the film, he didn't believe Superman was all good and that one day he will turn against humanity. However, during superman's final moments, he wasn't telling Batman to spare him. No. He told Batman, the man who was going to murder him to save his mother. Despite his incoming death, he was thinking about others.
    Lex was manipulating the scene. He made it seem like Superman was degrading Batman and Brice took the bait. So when Clark says "Save Martha," They didn't know their mothers had the same name so Bruce thought he was playing mind games on him. That's why he says, "Why did you say that name?" Then Lois comes and tells him that "it is his mother's name." Batman then realizes Superman was just trying to save his mother. He knows what that is like. To save your parents but being too helpless to do anything. He realizes what he has become. He became that man in the alley that killed his parents. A murderer. Superman showed mercy and thought about his mother during his final moments. it was the most human thing Bruce has seen since Robin has died.
    So Batman won the fight with Superman but in turn, Superman saves Batman and he makes him realize what he has become.
    I am not a DC/Snyder fanboy who has wild opinions and disregard criticisms of the film have just hate. I am barely a DC fan. However, I do believe the criticism this film gets is due to the fact that people didn't understand it because it wasn't your regular spoon-fed blockbuster film.
    "Lex didn't have the motivation?"
    "Why does Batman kill?"
    "Did Batman spare Superman because their mothers have the same name?'
    Those three critics come up a lot yet they were addressed in the film clearly.
    Also, I clicked on this video to see Zack Snyder's visual breakdown, not an opinion filled review on his work.

  • @TalhaMasood

    He has the same problem, George Lucas had when it came to the prequels. Too much power he needs someone over his shoulder to tell him that this might look cool but it has no place in the story the movie has, Another issue Snyder has is that he can't take criticism when you're working on something millions of people see and give opinion on you have to keep yourself open to critics and learn from your mistakes. "People are too stupid to understand the movie" or "Star Wars blew up planet and no one talked about that" are not valid responses to people not liking your movie.

    The other day I saw Man Of Steel purely for the director standpoint.. and I was really impressed of how it is directed, sometimes he uses long shots and then unites scenes with several fast cuts, the use of the zoom in and out it was just spot on and the shaky camera it`s used in a very effective way only to accentuate POV and stress, and then from a shaky camera changes to a very well composed and still shot... on a technical level on Man Of Steel Snyder is awesome... one can argue for sure of the payoff of his themes but as a technical filmmaker he is right there with the best in my opinion... Actually, reminding the audience that it's all fiction has been popular for a while in literature; it's a resource called "willing suspension of disbelief", and it has been used in quite known works such as Charlotte Brontë's "Jane Eyre".

      +George Daugherty I'm all for visualist directors. And his vision is amazing. Really. But his pacing is so nonsensical I can't be invested in a movie hat doesn't make sense. Now. Don't confuse that with someone like Nolan who makes confusing movies that make sense. Snyders movies don't make sense. And Matthew Vaughn is wayyyyy better than Snyder. Not even close

    Hmm. Interesting, but is being meta the same thing as trying to 'pull you out of the experience'? Personally, I don't think so. It's possible for good art to acknowledge its own artifice. Think of the prologue to Henry V, or pretty much the entirety of The Tempest. I think you're looking at this a little too literally. To me, acknowledging the artificial and unreal nature of the film/play, and speaking directly or indirectly to the audience, can, if done well, enhance the work's effect. The limits of the fictional world are delineated, and we know what to take seriously and what not to. Commenting on the nature of the art form within the performance (i.e. directly breaking the forth wall, or indirectly acknowledging the artifice of the production) doesn't necessarily break immersion. Why? Because everyone is aware all the time when they're watching anything fictional, that they're viewing something that isn't real. Never try to pretend otherwise.

    To be fair, when that newspaper received the diary of Rorschach, it was in the original graphic novel of "The Watchmen". Zach Snyder wanted to remain accurate to the source material, even though he got rid of the giant space squid. Dr. Manhattan was so omnipotent, he has grown so detached from humanity that he does not care about humanity and just wants to be a god full time somewhere else. Perhaps he could have spent some time on character motivations to explain that.

    Probably, because ummm... he DID NOT WRITE the stories, he just (visually) TOLD them!?!? if a story isnt good, it's not the directors fault... just make it look good! LOL I do like how you mentioned he doesnt know what kind of movies he actually wants to make.... I'd actually like to see him do a STAR WARS movie.. him and NOLAN!!

    • @de_lahn
      @de_lahn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Jeremy Williamson He can go over the script and change things he he wants to, plus directors talk with writers about things they want in movies

    • @JeremyWilliamson
      @JeremyWilliamson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      De'lahn Day of course he can, but that's him basically getting permission, because he would be proposing an idea... if they like it, then they do it... but ultimately, it's NOT his decision...it's the studio's.
      It's ALWAYS a creative collaboration, but there is a final say-so from the studio, the executive producer, etc. whom the director works for.

    • @de_lahn
      @de_lahn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jeremy Williamson except he proposed the idea for the DCEU and had creative control until now

    • @JeremyWilliamson
      @JeremyWilliamson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      De'lahn Day actually Nolan had creative control over ALL of DCEU until they had creative differences, that's why he bowed out, but was STILL Executive Producer.. now he's still involved but not as he was... he wants to do his own stories, because Nolan ties ALL his movies together, in some way.

    • @JeremyWilliamson
      @JeremyWilliamson 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      De'lahn Day but my point was... Zack did NOT WRITE the stories... he was given a script. He did NOT initiate the story... he adjusted it... which validates my original point from the start.. go back and read my original comment.

    Batman V Superman is a dialogue heavy movie. If you go in expecting a marvel kind of movie without paying attention to the dialogue, then you'd find more supposed "plotholes" in the movie. About Lex hating Superman, Lex even gives his reason almost at the end of the movie.

    5:26 - Interesting that you should use a Joss Whedon movie as the example of zoom shots that are intended to give the impression of a human camera operator trying (and initially failing) to seek out something within the frame, when in reality it's a meticulously-planned effects shot. As I recall, in one of his commentaries to a Firefly episode (possibly the pilot episode?), he criticises the use of such shots in the battle scenes at the end of Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones as being out-of-place with the aesthetic of the rest of the film, so that when he chose to have such shots in Firefly, he had to justify it and ensure it was in keeping with the rest of the series' shooting style.

    Zack Snyder is actually a really smart guy. He doesn't always seem like it because he's not very good with words in interviews and he usually relies to much on visuals to tell stories, but guys, I watched the man f steel behind the scenes not too long ago, and he puts INCREDIBLE amounts of detail into his movies. A lot of practical effects/stunts, usually mixed with visual effects, he makes (for the most part) really good casting choices, his movies are always beautiful looking, and I personally love his style! I think he's so divisive because he's so unique. He relies so much on his visuals that some people don't get it or just don't like it cause it's not what they're used to. Others love it and can appreciate it a lot (such as myself). He has his flaws but I would never say he's a bad director like Michael bay.

    • @redfox1366
      @redfox1366 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They went to the same school. They always use the same things; it's all found on the surface. There's nothing more than what you see (don't say there's symbolism; that's visual, too). The story is always bland or convoluted, so he relies on luring people in by making it look catastrophic or stylized to lure people into the theater.

    • @thisbuhlockay3875
      @thisbuhlockay3875 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Redfox I disagree! But your entitled to you opinion :)what I've noticed is Michael bay makes movies directed at teenage boys (he said that once) and puts racist stereotypes, one dimensional overly sexualized female characters, annoying comedy relieve characters, and tons and tons of explosions in his movies. Like I said, Zack actually tries to give us compelling, and emotional stores, and puts ALOT of effort into his movies. His problem is that sometimes he focuses to much on how the movie looks and ends up not thinking everything through when it comes to the plot. To me, Zack at least tries to be a good director whereas Bay has flat out admitted to being a shallow director. To me that speaks volumes of how Zack is a way superior director.

    • @TheFilmGuyOfficial
      @TheFilmGuyOfficial  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Redfox Michael Bay is a film historian he is one of the most knowledgeable filmmakers out there right now. He graduated the top of his class in film school, the problem is he's money hungry and lazy. He understands the mass majority of the audience don't want smarts well thought out movies that want explosion tits and things that make kids go ahh cool!!

    • @redfox1366
      @redfox1366 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Alek Blaylock Good points. I think Zack's problem mainly is in telling stories. He's passionate about his work, but he just doesn't understand what makes them appealing to a majority of people, and that's where he falls short as a director.
      The Film Guy That's the most depressing part of his story, sadly. He has the potential to make a competent film (shown with the Bengazi movie he did a few months ago), but he doesn't do that and instead aims to make tons of money. It's sad, really.
