42 x 21? Chapeau, Sir! I'd struggle on the flat with that gearing! That said, a friend of mine and I did our local club hillclimb on a tandem for a laugh a few years ago and its lowest gear was 42 x 27... we nearly came to a complete halt at one point ... 🤣🤣
Cheers, and Chapeau for giving it a whirl! I'm not exactly high on the list, especially as Winnats was used for the National Hillclimb Championship quite recently so all the top Strava times are likely from then...
@@WheelygoodCycling Thank-you. My ex-neighbour, who is now in his 90s, once entered the National Hill Climb up it and he said that half way up, Tommy Simpson overtook him. No disgrace in that and I bet his time would have been much faster than mine. I starred the "OOOSH Winnats Pass" segment on Strava so the profile would appear on my Garmin. My time on that segment (nearly 1.5 miles) was 15-48, but at least I got up it in one go !
No disgrace at all bing overtaken by Tommy Simpson! The closest I ever got to him, and I mean that in its saddest sense, was when I put a club cap on is memorial on Mont Ventoux… I rode the National in 2022, not with any expectation of anything other than ticking off something from my bucket list and I got passed by a couple people, but I was so far down the order that it wasn’t any one famous! I videoed it and stuck it on the channel, for amusement: RTTC British National Hillclimb Championships 2022 th-cam.com/video/1WG1b26V2MM/w-d-xo.html
Another good one Jon! Thankfully a closed road the day of the National Hill Climb and I believe the start line will be just after that first cattle grid.
Was annoyed with the traffic just watching. Places like this and cheddar gorge must be a nightmare. Maybe a June morning at 5am would be a good time. ;)
Any time the sun is shining is a problem with the popular routes. Cheddar Gorge is both better and worse: it’s wider, but busier. Interestingly, Mam Nick, which is right next door to Winnat’s is usually deserted…
Cheers! I use the free Garmin Virb app on a PC into which I can import the video from my GoPro and the data from my head unit, sync the two and it adds the data graphics. It works really well once you get into the routine of it…
@@WheelygoodCycling nice, will have a look out for that! 👍 Great vids btw. Did all the climbs around Matlock, Bakewell and Castleton yesterday. Bloody hot, I had to stop up Winnats for a drink lol
I wonder if parking will be allowed on the climb, on the day of the nationals? Was thinking of getting there very early morning, parking up off the road at a good spot & look forward to the race ahead. Anyone know?
Your best bet for Winnats is to find a spot at the top - there are some off-road places you can use or, if you want to take a chance with the wardens, I have seen people park on the roadside. The bottom will likely be carnage in the town with all the competitors trying to find space (it’s not the biggest of places and nor does it have the most facilities). Early morning is a good bet - if you bring a bike you can always ride Winnats and Mam Nick whilst you wait for the main event… 😉
@@WheelygoodCycling Thank you. I was asking as someone in our party is unable to walk, hence if we could park along the climb, but off the road. This person would then be able to watch from the car.
Ah, I understand. Based on spectating previous events, I really don't know: the HC is a closed road event IIRC and people line pretty much all of it, but there could be provisions for your circumstances. The place to ask is Cycling Time Trials as it's their event and there's a contact page here: www.cyclingtimetrials.org.uk/pages/contact
@@philadams9254 I meant on the pass, but off the road. There are more than enough grass verges for this. It's the only way a heavily disabled individual will be able to watch the race. Maybe the organisers should think about this.
Fair question! 🤣. I try not to stand if I'm filming, because the rocking of the bike makes the video look a bit weird (and could trigger nausea)... When I'm just riding I do mix it up a bit, although my natural style is to be seated most of the time...
Cheers - appreciated! As a random challenge, I did ride the whole of the Fred Whitton seated... can't really recommend it! 🤣 Squats in the gym and low gears on the bike are your friend for seated climbing...
There is a limit to riding in the saddle - I found it on Bamford Clough…feel free to have a watch, and a good laugh as I ground to a halt on the steepest bits! 😉 Good on you for planning to give Winnat’s a crack! 👍 A couple of bits of thoughts from my rides up there: the gradient is pretty relentless once it gets started, so it’s important to get your pacing right from the bottom so you still have a bit left by the time you get up towards the top cattle grid. The other is that the weather can make a massive difference, particularly the wind. The direction Winnat’s ‘points’ is pretty well aligned with the prevailing wind and, as the wind speed increases it starts to get funnelled straight down the channel as a huge headwind. These were the conditions the first time I rode it and it was horrific, so if riding it is new, I’d say it’s worth picking your day! One option you do have to help build up to Winnat’s is to have a go at Mam Nick, which is essentially next door. It’s a bit longer, but not as steep (although it does have the odd ramp) and makes a lovely climb. It’s also rather more sheltered until you get to the last hundred yards, or so, when the wind can come through the gap in the rock structures that the road comes through…
@@WheelygoodCycling Yeah the traffic is a mare, rarely quiet, on the plus side Mam Tor just on the right is an awesome descent. . .beautiful climb aswell!
I know what you mean about Mam Tor / Mam Nick. It’s lovely! The whole area is great - really like riding in the Peaks as it’s so rolling...the busy roads are a bit less fun, but what can you do? The video for the Mam Tor / Mam Nick climb will be up later in the week (as we were already there, it seemed a shame not to do both of them!)...
Yes, we got round Burbage Moor. The day consisted of Eccles Pike, Peaslows, Burbage Moor, Winnats and Mam Nick. I also had a quick trip down to Mow Cop too, just because... 😂
I won the last open hill climb on Winnats in 1980 - not sure if I would get up it now!
Fantastic effort, Sir! And I bet you could still make it to the top, putting the rest of us to shame!
On a fixed wheel geared to 42 x 21 or 54 inches in old money - no wonder my knees creak a bit now! Mind you, I was 15kg lighter then.

Official OHC/1 course starts from the kerb on the left at 3:22 and finishes at the sign on the left at 10:28
Well done. I road up it last Sunday with my Mansfield Road Club pals. My performance put me just outside the top 16000 on Strava !!😛

No. No parking allowed on Winnats Pass. It'll be a closed road anyway and you could get towed away.
