Cheers Wes, the Peak District is a sensational part of the UK as you can see 🤩 - and Winnats Pass is amongst the most spectacular climbs we have in the UK 💯
Thanks ever so much Gavin 🙏 - In massively appreciate your very kind support 💯 And for sure - the Peaks is an incredible part of the world for the Cyclist, and on this day and the next (see video Hill Climbers Heaven) we got super super lucky with the weather 🤩
As a regular rider up Winnats, they made it look a lot easier than it is!!! It gets steeper and steeper until the top and every pedal stroke becomes a challenge.
Cheers for reaching out Dan 🙏 - and for sure it’s steeper than it looks on film .. plus even more beautiful 🤩. You’re lucky to be able to ride it regularly 👌
🤣 thanks ever so much Jerome 🙏 - we are indeed blessed with the perfect weather to showcase the stunning vistas and geology 🤩 And as for the Bakewell Tart 😋😋😋
Cheers Stephen 🙏 - as always massively appreciated ! Those boys are strong on another level - David rode 30km to get to me and 30km to get back. And Phil had done 80km by the time he joined us and 50km to go when he left 🤯. And proper strong on the flat and the climbs 💪💪💪
Well done guys, I made the Winnats Pass today. At the age of 47, the sense of satisfaction once done was immense. I could see the smile on your face, once you got over the second cattle grid!
Congratulations on your climb Ali 💯💪 - it’s a tough one for sure, and from the right hand bend it’s unrelenting - so agreed an incredible sense of accomplishment 👌 - if you’re still in the area try some of the climbs around Matlock - like Bank Road and Riber - they are super steep too 😅
Literally amongst the the best of sensations, Pierre-Alain - it was truly scrumptious 😋😋😋 - and the sugars were definitely needed to take on Burbage Moor 😅

Ohh my God, thank u Phil. The video was perfect. You climbed a lot. Congratulations mate. I'm looking forward to more videos like this. With hello from Türkiye. Have fun.
I’m lost for words ! Thanks ever so much Atakan 🙏 - it was a perfect day in a sensational part of the U.K. 👌. And we have another lovely vid to follow next week👍
It was literally the perfect summer day in England - and the Peak District delivers views on views! Did you used to like Bakewell Tart when in the U.K., Pena ? This was the best I ever had 💯👌. The Jersey, Bibs and Socks are all cafe du cyclist - loving their stuff 🤩
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy I do want to go back to the Lake District when I’m home in October, as it’s been years since I’ve visited. I do like Bakewell Tarts and get the Mr Kiplings one from the English shop here, but your one looked amazing. Your face as you took a bite, said everything about how good it was !
The Lake District and Peak District will both look sensational in early October 💯 - perfect time to visit home. Mr Kipling is a boss…but the good folk in the Peak District have a few tricks up there sleeves in the Bakewell Tart department 💪😁
Thanks ever so much Nat 🙏 - we loved filming this one - super grateful to David and Phil 💯 Plenty more to come - we hit 10climbs in 60km around Matlock the next day 😅
Cheers for the strava comment on my KOM today, thought I'd reply here after watching this, I would comment more often but I've converted to using YT on the TV where you can't comment! Nice relaxing thing to watch at the end of a Sunday. (Not so relaxing for you three!)

My home turf. Born in Sheffield, walked and ridden those hills as a lad. Moved away at 18 to uni, abandoned cycling until I was 52, now 57, never been back with a bike. Made me put the Peak District Punisher Sportive on my Hit list. Great video - oh and if I get there I won’t be threatening any Strava lists…..
Nice decision to put the Peak District Punisher on your hit list Jonathan - you’ll get an extra 10W from just being back on your home turf💯💪. My family are from the midlands and love this area to this day - walking not cycling. I loved the area - absolutely stunning, and loads of punchy climbs and incredible vistas 🤩
Brilliant ride, brilliant riding buddies and brilliant weather, all makes for another brilliant vlog, looked like an amazing ride, I do miss the climbs and descents of the northern parts of the country, cycling paradise indeed 👌
Thanks ever so much Paul 🙏 - it was indeed a perfect day with amazing friends 💯💪 - I too love the midlands and the north - absolutely epic come rain or shine 🤩

Wonderful video Phill, superb effort up the pass. And good to see you done your homework in the form of Me Pritch's videos 😀. Have to also say loving the hooped cycling socks matching the hooped jersey.

Great video as always, I’ve only ridden up that way once, but we did cover 11 top 100’s in one ride, it was a terrific day weather-wise which always helps.
Thanks ever so much 🚂Rob 🙏 - 11 of the official 100 in a single ride is absolutely epic 💪✊ - you’ll see in the next vid we did the Matlock Top 10 the next day (x10 in 60km) - but only x2 or 3 of the official 100😅
Cheers Pete 🙏😊 - was definately a good legs day, spurred on by sunshine and the need to up my game when riding with David & Phil 💯 - we hit the Matlock Top 10 in the next vid - and that was proper emotional 😅
Cheers Tom 🙏- that’s super generous of you. Agreed Winnats is right up there with Wrynose and Hardknott - for difficulty and beauty . I can imagine looks sensational on the drone 💯
Can't believe I missed this video Phill, but excited to find it this evening. Once again, what a great video and great day out. So jealous, I'd absolutely love to ride with you all in person one day!
That would be amazing Nick 💯 - I’ll be in the Lake District on the Friday and Saturday ahead of the Fred Whitton, I know you are not far from Liverpool. Thanks for checking this one out - David got some stunning video and was amazing to ride out with him and Phil - perfect day that 👌
The Peak District is beautiful but sure does specialise in punchy climbs of 1.5-2.5km and gradients of 8-20%, Agnes 😅. Loved being up there with David and Phil - was the perfect day 👌
Cheers Ethan ;) Biscoff pancakes sound great! We do quite a lot of vegan baking actually. I think the Clif bar was more strategic knowing what was around the next corner on the route :)
So riding hills is just about numbers? No mention that (re Burbage Moor) that you’re actually riding up The Dale to the wonderful Stanage Edge. No shots of that or the wonderful views from the top over Hope Valley & Burbage?! Cycling purely as an outdoor gym & ticking boxes.
I’m a little taken aback by your message here, Al. The thumbnail is designed to show the beauty of the Peaks, and I spend a lot of time taking shots of the views. The reason I use a backward facing camera is to capture the majesty of the scenery. I also observe in the video that we train hard so that when the sun comes out we can enjoy good times with friends in dazzling countryside . Sure I show the data - because people are interested in this. Also bear in mind that I have a full time job - so when riding somewhere new we leave London on Friday night - arrive late and I really have very little idea as to what the route will take in (this was my first day in the Peaks) So I didn’t even know we were climbing Burbage Moor - and I did show some shots from the top and on the descent plus a lot of other beautiful sights (including Chatsworth) It’s meant to be a cyclists’ perspective of the thrill of traversing significant distances with the bikes affording close up access to beautiful countryside - but by definition we can pass through relatively quickly on a big loop - where folk need to get back to their families etc. Best Phill
G’Day Thanks for a great video. Being a climbing Specialist do you engage the back pedal stroke upstroke when cycling uphill. Or do you use primarily your front leg muscles. Or a mixture of both? Cheers
Cheers Sapiens 🙏 - super kind of you. On the WattBike with the data to demonstrate pedalling efficiency, I do always try to pedal in circles and keep engaged for the backward up stroke. I think about pushing through with the heel and leading back and up with the heel. When standing I do try to engage the upstroke - but am less consistent especially when tired / at high power. But I benefit from all the strength training when standing because I feel a good amount of Glute & ham engagement - plus I’m using a lot of core and arms to stabilise (and ideally pull up a little on the bars)👍
Epic weather for an epic ride, enjoyed that! I do like the rear facing go-pro footage, may have to invest in one of those mounts for when Sarah is dropping me haha
Cheers Giorgio - was literally the perfect day in the Peaks - and what a place to cycle 👌🤩. It takes a bit of setting up - but I love the footage - reccomended 💯
Cheers Brian - on the Colnago I have a compact and a 32 - and as the gradient gets above 11-12% will need to get out the saddle - but will click up a gear or 2 from the smallest gear. I have a 30 on the rear of the Wilier and front cogs to give the same feel as the hearing on the Colnago - not sure the ratio.
"The Peaks" really are a beautiful part of the UK. I am lucky only around 1-1.5hr drive for me from home. Like to get up there a few times a year and enjoy. Winnats is disgusting! Never done burbage yet - sure will be on the hitlist.
Wonderful to be within driving distance, Greg - agreed it’s sensational countryside for the cyclist - so many punchy climbs and beautiful vistas 🤩. Loved Burbage Moor - it’s a long climb for the U.K. - but whilst shallower has some steep ramps, and amazing views 👌
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy - I have missed it this year with being poorly. My first trip will be first weekend of Sept this year. Staying in Maccelsfield right near the bottom of the Cat & Fiddle - one of my favourites. Used it a lot for long climb practice for my Alps trips last year.
Wishing you a continued recovery, Greg - and a sunny autumn, so you can enjoy getting back out. I read about the Cat & Fiddle in Gerrant Thomas’ book - and it sounds like a very good training climb 👍
What a ride! Beautiful weather, beautiful terrain, amazing riding buddies! Nice to see David and Phil again. :) I even recognized the approach to Winnats from Pritch's videos :D I'm a little surprised that you didn't tell David that "cadence is key" going up Winnats, but maybe that's for the best as to not make him stand up and power away from the Phil(l)-sandwich that was awaiting him later. ;P Ps. Who was the local HCer? Anybody known? He was going well there! :O
It’s really good to meet up with friends from our community, Lord - and David planned an epic route. Cadence is of course key….until it gets so steep that even the Freight Train 🚂 runs out of gears 🤣 Trainer Difficulty 100% anyone 😁. David Will know the name of the hill climb competitor . Was good to have Chris’ videos for my recon 👌 - learned how not to climb the first part 🤣
Cheers Nikola 🙏 - and a number of other people have commented similar. I’ll be back to the Peak Distric to give it a try - looking forward to it (love the peaks 🤩)
Ive been winnats pass 7 times never made it to the top on the bike. 1st few times got to the 1st grit box. Then other times to the 2nd grit box thats when it ramps up 20%? Last time i got past the 2nd grit box and past the 20% Section but with 150 mtrs to go my body just gone into meltdown and i stopped i was gutted. Ile be back
marginal gains dept. technique up hills blameless. cadence only compromised when you run out of gears. using a compact would mitigate this and perhaps reduce the metabolic stress, delaying the point of fatigue, and allowing for harder subsequent efforts. spinning for longer: a 1% gain? fellows don’t like compacts, i know. they say, “but, dash it, i need the 52 for crits and wotnot. i’ll spin out”. but has that ever happened? if it has-like mr brownlow’s friend in “oliver twist” liked to say-“i’ll eat my head”. something to consider.
Cheers FFF - and I agree with your logic. I run a compact and a 32 on the Colnago which I use for crits. And try to stay seated and spin a high cadence for as long as possible on the climbs. The Wilier has a 30 on the rear - but a climbing set up on the front Cog - and gives a similar range of options as the Colnago - but smoother. The same shop fitted both the Ultegra on the Colnago and the Dura Ace on the Wilier - and they felt that because the Wilier is an out and out climbing bike the set up they chose was optimal. I do find that when the gradient sustains at 10% then my cadence drops into the 80s - and on Winnats when it then goes to 12% or more, I find it more comfortable out the saddle - but could stay seated and grind out a lower cadence (sometimes I do). This is in part why I use TD 100% on Zwift - because in my experience with my fitness and power, I can’t sit and spin up a climb of 10-12%+ . I think some riders with better power to weight can spin up a steep climb - but when I see other riders at the Sportives etc I see a lot of very uncomfortable cadence vs what they are likely able to do on TD 50% on Zwift .
@@BikeRacingWithoutMercy one thing i like about durianrider is his willingness to consider any gearing configuration so he can spin whatever the gradient. (the rest of his advice is rather in the “up to a point, lord copper” variety).
what an idyllic scenery!
Great footage, cheers!

What is your gearing on the climbs? Rear cog, small chain ring?
I even recognized the approach to Winnats from Pritch's videos :D
I'm a little surprised that you didn't tell David that "cadence is key" going up Winnats, but maybe that's for the best as to not make him stand up and power away from the Phil(l)-sandwich that was awaiting him later. ;P
Ps.
Mam Nik is a much more difficult climb from Edale, than Winnats Pass imo. Longer and steeper.
Ile be back
So so close - and nice decision to go back again and tame it 💪🚀
glar-say (glacé).
As always - very much appreciated Tripple F 🙏😁
marginal gains dept. technique up hills blameless. cadence only compromised when you run out of gears. using a compact would mitigate this and perhaps reduce the metabolic stress, delaying the point of fatigue, and allowing for harder subsequent efforts. spinning for longer: a 1% gain? fellows don’t like compacts, i know. they say, “but, dash it, i need the 52 for crits and wotnot. i’ll spin out”. but has that ever happened? if it has-like mr brownlow’s friend in “oliver twist” liked to say-“i’ll eat my head”. something to consider.
👏👍🇫🇷🚴🏻♂️
Thanks ever so much Alain 🙏🙏 - super kind of you 💯
not a proper Bakewell tart that...
Ahhhh 😁 - it was proper nice. I look forward to hunting down an authentic one when I’m up toward the end of the month 💯
