I'm sad to say my grandpa's neighbor shot a black bear in Bexar County (just a little north of San Antonio, by the Dominion now) when I was an 8 year old child in the early 80's. I'm still very sad they shot it., they didn't need to., but justified it by saying it could have eaten me., but I still wasn't scared., and told them they shouldn't have killed it.

I love West Texas. Thank-you for helping these Black Bears!! Please keep us posted on these beautiful creatures! Could I visit the study site as a Good Water (Georgetown TX) Texas Master Naturalist? Lucky to live on the Gap! How cute- the marriage talk! Fun!!!

I was hiking in the Chisos one day and heard a bear snort loudly - I think he was warning me. I continued up the trail but never saw him.

I know they're doing all this to help the bears, but I still feel a little bad for the poor things. Imagine waking up, you don't know where you are, you're groggy & feel like crap, plus you have this thing around your neck... it's like the wild kingdom version of the hangover.

The wife and I were hiking the window trail and spotted a bear on the edge of a ravine!! It was trying to shake the berries out of a tree and was knocking rocks off into the ravine! We stood behind a bush watching it and another couple was coming back up the trail! I gestured to stop and was pointing at the bear, raised my hands in a claw like manner, but the bear saw me and took off up the side of the mountain! We were way to close for comfort! Glad it ran the other way!! FYI, the Window Trail is in the Chisos Mountains in Big Bend National Park, Texas!!
