If you could only have THREE art materials to use in your sketchbook, what would they be? (For example: If you say watercolor each color counts as ONE of the things)
I love that you don’t cut things out when they aren’t perfect, leaving in your struggle and how you overcome it is so helpful to me and I’m sure others ❤️
‘It’s the playing that leads to ideas.’ Brilliant. I’m a quilt artist, and I find this is true. I need to play. Adults forget to play. Great advice, Paula.
Paula, you said you aren’t great with color!? Paula, you are AMAZING with color!!! It is one of the incredible qualities that I love about your art! Thank you for being honest about your feelings when you feel frustrated. You make my inner child giggle with “artistic tantrum!” 😂 You have inspired me! Thank you! 😊
I honestly think that it's incredibly valuable to see the process of reworking an idea over and over again until you figure out how to translate the concept in your head into a successful image on the page. Learning involves both failures and successes and if give up when something doesn't work out the way you want it to, you miss out on the opportunity for growth.
I enjoy your honesty and sharing of your emotional response to your art. It is interesting to me that you, the artist, may not like something you've created, but me, the viewer may like it very much. Also, you keep persisting regardless of how you feel. This inspires me.
📓 I enjoyed this very much. Great inspiration. Thank you for the message that it’s ok to play and not everything needs to be a masterpiece. My perfectionism holds me back from enjoying as much as I could 😊
Hi Olga! I’m so happy you enjoyed the video 🥰 I’m a complete type A so I’m always teaching myself to let go and enjoy the process, I’m happy I can share what I do ❤️ let’s just have fun!!!
I'm glad you let us see the process you use to get to something you like. It makes me feel better that I don't love everything I do. I believe you're right about discovering ideas as you go. Keeping the 'fails' is a perfect reminder that I just need to keep trying.
07:40 your process, that’s AMAZING! ❤❤❤ I’m struggling to just play without worrying and learning how you keep repeating until you’re happy is super helpful
📙 love that you show your full process, even the ones you hate. We are oft times the worse critics of our work, but you show persevering can lead to great results. Loved your goddess images ❤ I too seem to gravitate to faces but go from acrylic, water colour and pencil not yet finding my true style. Thank you for sharing your works x
Thank you so much! I am my harshest critic; other than my inner critic and imposter syndrome of course! 😂 those guys can be rough! I’m sure if you continue to play with all your media you’ll eventually find which calls you the most… I know what brings me more joy and peace when I want to wake up on a Sunday morning and play with it before even showering or breakfast! I’m a little zombie on weekend mornings (truly not an early bird) so my higher self chooses and it’s wonderful!
I love both of those pages that you hated - however, I ALSO love how honest you were about how you felt. I really admire your art and sometimes I think it’s important for us to see that it’s okay to hate our artwork and that doesn’t make us a bad artist ❤️
I was so fortunate and blessed to happen upon you on TH-cam. I've made one comment already. And like I said before I don't do social media. And I definitely do not post any comments but obviously I am for you because you are awesome. I just, I've been on this for a couple hours. I'm sure I've been multi tasking and you are just awesome. I really like your style. I really like how you just laid out there. And I just can't thank you enough. You have inspired me so much at this moment in time.Thank you thank you
I came across your video yesterday and I just love it. Especially this one when things don’t work out and the frustration and pissyness that comes up, and you pushed through it. Thank you for being authentic 😊
📓 I love your sketchbook ideas! It’s so good to hear you talk about your artistic tantrums (perfect word for it!) and how you can use those paintings to learn and grow and create more! So much better than feeling bad about a painting you don’t like very much.
📔 I've just subscribed after watching the most encouraging video yet. At 65 I've just discovered watercolours and I'm trying to find my style. I'm drawn to anything abstract, but it doesn't always work for me. Seeing you difficulty with the flowers has encouraged me to keep trying. Thank you so much for giving me that lift. ❤
The idea behind your creative process is consistency not perfection. When we pursue creativity with consistency and not perfection the process becomes Joyous!! Keep creating!!!!!!
I especially love the last one, the golden leaf, and the one which took you three attempts, the third is really gorgeous! Thank you for sharing, and thank you for showing that things can still turn out great even if one is very unhappy with initial ... not quite so successful tries.
Girl, you have some real talent! Your style is EXACTLY what I hope to mimic in my clumsy, childlike way. I am NOT an artist, but I’m going to borrow your ideas and just have fun. ❤❤❤
📖Omgosh!!! I love you!! I love how honest you are..." I hated it.....I still hated it....I was feeling all pissy"... lmao! It's like you're right inside my head Paula! I'm really really new to painting with watercolor and your videos have been sooooo helpful and you make me laugh. I just received a new watercolor sketchbook today....and it truly is intimidating! 😮 Thank you for sharing your art with us, for being so down to earth, and for making me laugh! Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦
Thank you so so much Shannon! 🥰I’m very grateful you are finding this useful and you can relate to my process! I hope you enjoy playing with your watercolors!!! ❤️❤️❤️ don’t be intimidated! It’s just paper! I swear I need to write that on my desk 😀
Well...I must admit, I'm pretty famous with my family and friends for trying something new....and then flying into a blinding rage and pitching whatever I'm working on into the woodstove...true story😁
Wonderful channel. I have been in a rut. I actually like the ones you don’t. But after seeing your book and quick paintings, i feel so inspired. My problem has been too much control and laboring through every decision. That’s exactly what has happened to me. It has become work and trying to find my fun again.
Hi Jennifer! Thank you so much!!! I’m so happy this has inspired you! I’ve been in the exact same place you are describing so I’m very happy we can leave that behind together! Hope you had fun painting! ❤️
Paula, you don't have to justify keeping a painting. You can keep it simply because you made it. Maybe it was a bad feeling that you had to get out. Or, like you said, it was a necessary step to get to the painting you *do* like. But if you just genuinely don't like something you made, it's ok to throw it away, and that's not a tantrum. That's honing your craft and gaining the valuable knowledge of what *doesn't* work. Please be more patient with yourself. You deserve it! Warm wishes from Minnesota! ❤️❤️❤️ May your pencils always be sharp and your colors never bleed.
Thank you so much for showing us the whole process. It helps a lot to see that even very talented artists like you don't like every piece of artwork they make. ❤❤❤ I get so much inspiration watching your videos. Thanks a lot!
I feel so relieved that I am not the only one that goes through "artistic tantrums!" I have come across so many times when I sketch and paint something out with the best of intentions in my mind and then I get the pen/brush to paper and it just blows up! Thank you for your advice and really the best advice is exactly what you said - just keep trying and moving forward. Don't give up on the creativity! ❤
Great video - fantastic to see your sketchbook that you use for your main art, so much practice and repetition. It encourages me to keep practicing and repeating ❤
I love your square trees that you showed us in your sketchbook and have tried drawing some myself. I've also made a crochet version with flowers on as a small wallhanging. I've really enjoyed myself. Thanks so much for the inspiration. I'd really like to see the process of you painting / drawing some of the square trees if you get some time. Thank you
Oh wow thank you! I’m so happy you’ve felt inspired! I actually have a video tutorial on how to paint my trees here on the channel : th-cam.com/video/eLgthJ5RzMc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=Y9Qih5obiUjzNZLa I hope it serves you ☺️
Thanks Paula, that's great. I haven't got acrylic paints but as you say we can use watercolour instead. I'm looking forward to having another go. Thanks very much.

It's amazing how good your ideas are in your sketchbook and then what happens when you turn them into wall art! I can't imagine anything I'd ever do that would translate into gorgeous wall art. You are SO inspiring, even when you hate something. I appreciate how you take what you perceive as a mistake and figure out how to get through it. Not many artists would be so transparent. Love you!
I just want to thank you and TH-cam for helping me to be more comfortable with nothing becoming something! You have helped me in the last three or four days I’ve discovered you to just fill up a few pages in my sketch book and I am grateful for that. It has helped me to also start to thinking on my own and to also stop overthinking when I’m releasing creative energy. Thank you 😊
So grateful for you! And I loved how you worded it “releasing creative energy” that’s what it is really about! And of course the joy and satisfaction we get from it! Thank you! ❤️
Just found your channel today and I love it. I have long wanted to make a sketch book and I love your ideas! I especially love that you showed the ones you weren’t happy with but you kept trying and showed that you learn from them. I also like your showing trying the same one again to learn from it. Thank you!
paula, you most certainly are inspiring and...you are remarkably brave. ty for sharing your authentic feelings of disappointment & (maybe) annoyance... i'm so glad you pushed through
i just bought two sets of water colour paints and i am so itching to start it just excites me to have all my supplies and i have a few days to play with them !!! Lynn Eyland Halifax Nova Scitia! Thank you Paula!
This video was incredibly helpful. If an actual artist (you) struggles at times then of course a newbie like me will definitely struggle. I like the way you talked yourself through the rough spots, and determined that everything you created had some value, even if you didn't love it. I am enjoying the process so much more instead of feeling pressure or disappointment.
Paula you are such an inspiration!! I began to lose my fear of drawing and making a mess after started to fallow you! I am an artist but I have so many traumas and blockages that these videos have been like some sort of a saviour for my lack of confidence. So I’m very thankful to you and your wonderful kind smile!
Thank you so much for sharing this with me Sonia!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I have felt the same so I’m happy to share what helped me so we can be happier creatives together! 🥰
I really appreciated your comments about how and why you decided to do different things on your pages. It gives a nice peak into your creative process! Thank you!
I love how you are so genuine! You don't mind sharing your up's/downs. That's what it's all about. I also really liked the one picture of a lady in your second book but you showed the pictures in it fast so I can't share exactly which picture it is. 😐
Thank you so much!! ☺️ I’ll probably try to do a slower flip through my sketchbooks soon - in the meantime you can always see more of my portraits at Pacal.art on insta ❤️
I love your whole thought process as you work through your sketchbook. It has inspired me to start working on "playing" again. AND!!!! my Arrtx markers should be arriving today! I'm looking forward to giving them a try. Acrylics were my first "grown up" art supplies that my mom got for me decades ago. I went on to pen & ink drawings, watercolors, and then did graphite pet portraits for commission. I'm coming back to my love of all things art and have so enjoyed playing again! ♥🎨 Thank you for your inspiration, Paula!
I really enjoyed this video- it made me want to go play in my sketchbooks! I make my watercolor sketch books and I made one that was very rectangular-3 1/2” x 8”. For some reason, I also decided that they would be double spreads. And then I decided to go through and tint each spread with a watercolor wash. Each decision was out of the ordinary for me. I only have a couple pages left in it but it has been lots of fun. No need to reply👍😀
📓 Thank you for taking the time to read the comments! I have no idea how to use watercolor… you make it look so easy that I really want to try now. I just need to buy a sketch book that I can do watercolor on. ❤ I want to let you know that I really enjoy watching your videos and watching you draw is relaxing and addicting. Keep it up, Paula! You are doing wonders to a lot of us!
Just what I needed today, thank you. Was so frustrated with my painting this week, just felt horrible about what I created. But I don’t have give up and get rid of my brushes!❤
📓 You're the reason why I bought a sketchbook and watercolors again and already filled it half way in two weeks. But also, that brought me to a video idea, because the colors are very cheap and I wonder if you can tell as an artist what the differences are. Maybe you could try cheap art supplies and show what you can do even though the material isn't the best. Thank you so much for your inspiring videos!! ❤
Wow! Thank you so much 😊 you’ve made me super happy and I feel honored! I actually LOVE that idea! I was at cvs a couple of weeks ago and thought maybe I should make a video using the supplies there! So it’s definitely in my list! Thanks! ❤️
Cheap paints are less pigmented, use more fillers, the pigments themselves are cheaper, often they are not lightfast. That said: You can still have a lot of fun with cheap paints and create beautiful art! And if you only use them in your sketchbook, lightfastness seems less important. Most artists say: If you are on a budget and have to save money, even student grade paints can render beautiful art work, but buy the best paper you can afford!
📓No reply needed! Just want to tell you that you have inspired me so much these last few weeks since I found your amazing Channel! I even have a box of items to keep my sketchbook going in the car! 📓Hi Paula! Love watching your artwork techniques. As a person who spends more time away from my studio (and paints) and outside in the nice weather, I’m wondering if you would do a video on ideas that do not use paint…maybe just a black marker?
I just found your videos and am enjoying them so much! Thank you so much for showing your process and even the ones you don’t like. It is so helpful for me to know that I’m not the only one that messes up and that it’s part of the process of learning. Great video!
Recently found your videos and I am happy I did!! I plan on getting caught up because I feel so inspired to make mistakes and see where that takes me! Thank you!!!
I just want to say thank you! I ran across your channel the other day and love your positive attitude about art and life! I forgot how fun this can be and I plan to start dabbling in it soon!
Hi! Welcome and thank you so much! ❤️ I think we all forget at some point why we liked art in the first place; and as adults we need a constant reminder that fun needs to be a part of it! Hope you started playing already and are enjoying it! ☺️ all my best!
All r beautiful.....my fave also is the first one... I'd hang that on my wall for sure.....but, this looks so relaxing n fun I need to try this again...I used to draw kitties n stick ppl....but, you've taken me to a whole new area of art....I love it!!!!!! TFS Shelly from Colorado 😉
I love watching your videos 🥰 I live in Copenhagen and is always looking for new inspiration. You really make me want to use my watercolors again 🥰 Thank you for sharing ❤️
Oh my, I just discovered your channel today. What refreshingly authentic instructional videos, I have to be careful to not just binge watch so dug out my watercolors and a journal so I can start doing, not just watching. I have a lot of chronic pain, and the program I follow to help with it has a whole section on play. I just rewatched it yesterday and discovered your sketchbook videos today. My stars must be aligned nicely! Question: I am assuming you are using waxy colored pencils, not water soluble? Do you use both? By the way enlarging your pages - brilliant.😊
Hi! Thank you so much and welcome! I’m happy to have you here! Play and joy!!! I am so sorry you have pain, sending healing prayers to you! I hope you are enjoying your watercolor play! And yes, I’m using prismacolor pencils ☺️
I’m enjoying your videos so much and have been playing with many of the supplies you’ve mentioned recently, such as the Kuritake watercolor palette and graphite watercolors as well as Posca markers! When I saw this pop up today I couldn’t wait to watch! I love your honesty and full on emotions - so real and although frustrating for you in the moment, very inspirational for me! Thank you for all you do and for fueling my creativity!
If you could only have THREE art materials to use in your sketchbook, what would they be? (For example: If you say watercolor each color counts as ONE of the things)
Pencil, eraser, thin fine liner in black
Pencil and 2 color markers im feeling that day ...or maybe even just 3 markers if im feeling spunky 😂
colored pencils only.
Red, blue and yellow colored pencils.
But it would be a big help if I could have a 4H layout pencil and a 0.1 technical pen as well!
On the leaves painting, what type of coloured pencils did you use please?
I love that you don’t cut things out when they aren’t perfect, leaving in your struggle and how you overcome it is so helpful to me and I’m sure others ❤️
Thank you so much Melanie! Will keep sharing as is ☺️

i just bought two sets of water colour paints and i am so itching to start it just excites me to have all my supplies and i have a few days to play with them !!! Lynn Eyland Halifax Nova Scitia! Thank you Paula!
Oh how great!!! I hope you enjoy them tons! ❤️
📓Tiny messy hearts are my favourite thing to draw. They make me smile and fills my heart with joy..
I love that! And I have similar feelings towards painting hearts! ❤️
I love the leaves
This video was incredibly helpful. If an actual artist (you) struggles at times then of course a newbie like me will definitely struggle. I like the way you talked yourself through the rough spots, and determined that everything you created had some value, even if you didn't love it. I am enjoying the process so much more instead of feeling pressure or disappointment.
Thank you so much! 🥰Glad it was helpful!❤️❤️❤️
Wow I love the way you blend colors!!!!! 💝💝💝💝💝
Thank you so much 😊
Paula you are such an inspiration!!
Thank you!
Thank you so much!
Yay!!! I’m so happy for you! And I hope you are enjoying your new markers! 🎉❤️
I especially like your stained glass leaf at the end.
Love the artistic tantrums! Also especially how you learned and kept going!!💕
Love watching your process in creating. It’s very honest; very authentic; and very inspiring.
Thank you! This is really helping my artistic side. Loving your videos. Blessings.
Thank you so much ! ❤️
Love it, thanks for keeping the not so well pges in. Makes your process so honest
Love the quote 💜
📓 Thank you for taking the time to read the comments! I have no idea how to use watercolor… you make it look so easy that I really want to try now. I just need to buy a sketch book that I can do watercolor on. ❤ I want to let you know that I really enjoy watching your videos and watching you draw is relaxing and addicting. Keep it up, Paula! You are doing wonders to a lot of us!
You are so welcome! And thank you so much 🥰this makes me really happy! ❤️ let me know how it goes!!!
Thank you for posting your process- it is so perfectly relatable 😀
You are so welcome! ☺️ thank you!
I love your enthusiasm, it is infectious. I shall have ago at this. Thank you. Regards Carol
Thank you so much Carol ❤️Have fun!
Just what I needed today, thank you. Was so frustrated with my painting this week, just felt horrible about what I created. But I don’t have give up and get rid of my brushes!❤
Let’s all keep our brushes!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I just bought my first set of watercolor. I am petrified. You are making it a little better. Thank you.

I recently found you and I'm loving what you do. I'm so inspired! I want to paint and doodle!
Thank you so much for letting me know this has inspired you! Best compliment ever! 🥰
📓Hi Paula! Love watching your artwork techniques. As a person who spends more time away from my studio (and paints) and outside in the nice weather, I’m wondering if you would do a video on ideas that do not use paint…maybe just a black marker?
Oh I love that! Black markers are my favorite so I’ll definitely add this idea to my list! Thank you so much! ❤️
So much fun! Thank you for the fabulous ideas!
I love these, even if you don’t love them, it gives you other ideas. 💕
Paula! I love your first leaves! I thought they were feathers and got inspired!!
Thank you so much!😊
I just found your videos and am enjoying them so much! Thank you so much for showing your process and even the ones you don’t like. It is so helpful for me to know that I’m not the only one that messes up and that it’s part of the process of learning. Great video!
Hi Dana! Welcome and thank you so much! ☺️ we all mess up all the time! Have fun! ❤️
Recently found your videos and I am happy I did!! I plan on getting caught up because I feel so inspired to make mistakes and see where that takes me! Thank you!!!

Thank you! I loved that sharing has showed me more adults have then too! 😄
I’m so happy you have enjoyed this Shelley!!! Thank you!
These are all great ideas! Thanks for sharing! 🥰
I love watching your videos 🥰 I live in Copenhagen and is always looking for new inspiration.
You really make me want to use my watercolors again 🥰
Thank you for sharing ❤️
Wonderful inspiring video❤
Thank you so much for watching and your beautiful words that keep me super inspired!!! ❤️🥰
Love your ideas. Will be trying some out!
Good idea drawing from memory, and bravo for persisting, some nice pieces there ❤
I love this and appreciate the ideas for filling a sketchbook! 💜💜💜
Honestly I love your clay art pls do again 😊
