Music is the most powerful force in human history
First baritone gourd banjo I've seen! The tone on that thing, wow
Thank you. The warmth and punch as it resonates feel and sound wonderful to play as well. I’d love to make you one!
@@LowlyMountainBanjosI'd love to get one made

Everyone now and then I come here and think about the ones I've lost. Thankyou.
Very powerful. Thank you.
This instrument is close to it's ancestor from Africa. It was used for wedding ceremonies, etc. The African word for banjo roughly translates 'to sing and dance' depending on the time period and region.
The original instrument in Africa was fretless with strings usually made from sinu. This gentleman's instrument is very close replica.
Great sound to accompany a great voice on a great song! Excellent job!!! Much respect to you sir.
In heaven we will be able to make music with both halves of a squash if we want to.
One of my favorite clawhammer accompaniment licks. Love it on this banjo.
Between your singing and playing and the instrument, this is beautiful.
That’s a big banjer
Im love this. I would love listening or playing this instrument while fishing for catfish at the river. Lord is most gracious. Most holy. Everytime i go fishing. I see all the creatures at the river. The birds. Fish. Turtles. Insects. Lizards. Sky. Water. Mountains. Trees. I think wow. Lord you are almighty.
Happy Easter, my friend. Christ is risen!
Wow, beautiful performance. The sound out of that banjo is great and you've got a great voice!
The bird chirping at the end was the finishing touch. Well done, brother!
Beautifully played. What an amazing deep and mournful sound from this banjo! A great complement to the voice
This has been playing in my head all day today
Excellent ! Back to Africa ! The circle is achieved !
Yes go back
Absolutely gorgeous! "Glory Bound" is one of my all-time favorite Wailin' Jennys songs, and your playing and the banjo really bring the song to life. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world!
Wonderful. Lovely rich tone from the gourd - probably the deepest I've ever heard? Shere craftsmanship, & very nicely played too! Many thanks.
This is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard
Beautiful, thank you. Your playing and your song praise God! 🙏✝️
That was really lovely--stirred up some emotion in this crusty old guy. Love the Wailing Jennys, and that baritone banjo is sublime. Well played and sung--thank you for sharing that with everybody.
Thank you for such a lovely delivery, timing, sound and tone!
Nice crooning there Fred.
Thanks, man!
just realized the start is the exact same as the start of Caroline by Colter Wall
Wow! Subbed, I'm a blues harmonica player from SC i love this!!
Man, that's a huge gourd! Nice work.
Man this is really something special. Keep it up.
thank you for this creation and its and yours subsequent creations.

I certainly will. Please can you post more playing this beautiful instrument
@@basedbuz this one is sold so I don’t have access to it anymore. There are other videos here with similar instruments.
Me too. Same feeling I get listening to Elizabeth cotton or old Dylan bootlegs, this sorry of lost, nostalgic feeling. And one day God will fix it all.
Lovely singing and playing!
It sounds just like an akonting.
Beautiful!
Fantastic!
So beautiful. That is a massive gourd btw haha, hard to find ones that big
Beautiful.
So Beautiful❤ Thank U from Kentucky!
sounds great
An American akonting 👍sounds good
Banjo history is fascinating and while it almost certainly has ancestry with akontings, it is also rooted in other African lutes, as the African population brought to the western hemisphere came from many parts of Africa, the people groups not necessarily having prior contact with each other.
Thank you 🌈🕊️
Oh awesome awesome!! ❤
Wonderful!
This is lovely! Found it while researching about minstrel and gourd banjos, and fell in love with this beautiful instrument. Those bass tones are wonderful . I'll be trying a build like this. Lovely stuff. ❤
Beautiful man
sweet sound
Thanks dude. That shit was lit.
Wonderful
My boy!!! Love this video, brother!
And I love YOU!
Great intonation! I didn't hear a note out of place!
Great tone…that action’s high enough for a clothes line 🧺
It’s actually pretty close to the fingerboard, just high off the head.
I have to have one of those!
Glad to make you one. Reach out at lowlymountianbanjos@gmail.com
Very nice
Thats purdy
What is the tuning? Beautifully done
Thanks for the kind words. It’s a double C tuning , but not quite an octave lower than a standard banjo. g#C#G#C#D#.
If I were to ask you to build me one of these but with a dark neck, how much would you charge. I have a budget of $470.
That was beautifully played and sung by the way.
Beautifully played and beautifully sung, and that banjo sounds INCREDIBLE. I've just been plinking around on my long scale minstrel, which I have tuned gdgdb - I don't know what your tuning is here, but my instrument would not handle things that low, and yours sounds SO RICH
Thanks for the kind words. It represents a couple years of tweaking each element of the design to maximize the warmth and low-end volume such that now it is an entirely different instrument than a standard pitched banjo.. It's tuned a full octave below standard tuning so even though the fingerings are all the same, the playing approach is much slower and more minimal than traditional banjo playing.
@@LowlyMountainBanjos Yeah, I've discovered the same things, technique wise, on my Ballard Banjers minstrel. When I can, though, I'm gonna order one of these from you - I'm blown away. Can you ship internationally?
@@thereverendsam413 I've never had any problems shipping outside the US. I just avoid using certain woods due to shipping laws.
@@LowlyMountainBanjos alrighty. I'll be in touch when I'm in a position to order.
Great work! The playing, singing, and craftsmanship. I came across this video while going on a banjo music adventure. And I am convinced i want to learn to play. How much does a banjo like this go for?
Thanks for the kind words. All the pricing information can be found at www.lowlymountainbanjos.com
Great
That banjo sounds awesome! By the name of your page you made it, I assume?
Yes I did. Everything on my channel was made by me. Thanks for the appreciation.
watched a bunch of the videos now, even the whole build series. You are a craftsman, very nice work. They all sound awesome too!
I want that f**cking thing.
I can make you one. Hit me up at lowlymountainbanjos@gmail.com
a baritone banjo, eh? sounds really interesting. whats the tuning? btw, i subbed to your channel, so keep the good stuff coming!
amazing performance, i found you a year back or so and i always find myself coming back to this one. Your baritone gourd banjo had inspired me to make my own some day and ive had some experience making gourd banjos so im hoping this one goes well haha. also, what kind of gourd did you use for the body? ive never seen one like it! asking for a friend…
Great to hear! I get all my gourds from a local farm. I get to hand pick each one, but they are mostly all cross-pollinated so I’m not sure what the variety would be.
Wow💗💚💗💗💗💗💗
Would you be kind enough to tell us aboput the string sizes? This sounds great.
These are flat-wound classical guitar strings.
What a beautiful sounding instrument! 🥰 What kind of strings did you use, just regular nylon/nylguts or are these longer? I would love to build something similar some day myself
Thanks for saying so. I typically use flat-wound classical guitar strings. This one is a mixture of that along with some minstrel banjo strings as an experiment. Cello banjo strings are a possible solution as well.
@@LowlyMountainBanjos Nice, thanks for the tips! 🙏
@@LAURISDIYCHANNELTV You bet. Hope to see your creation.
My, one can see the notes flow straight from the banjo.
What is the tuning on a baritone banjo? Is it the same as a regular banjo, only an octave lower?
Yep. This happens to be slightly sharper than C, but yeah That's where these instruments are tuned to.
That makes it a bass banjo not baritone
so is that c standard and would work in any other standar\d key tunin such as g?
@@LowlyMountainBanjos
@@snuffman5497 I'm guessing it's relative to gCGCD, aka double-C
@snuffman5497 oldtime banjo uses many tunings. G and C are probably the most popular, or their counterparts A and D when playing with a fiddle. The tunings are more than just about playing in different keys though. They are about accessing different pitch collections with the scale degrees at different locations on the fingerboard. So they each have their own unique characteristics.
What kind of gourd did you use to make it? It has a wonderful sound.
I'm not entirely sure of the species. Gourds have a way of crossbreeding. I handpick every gourd from a local farm and they grow a variety of gourds there. Every now and then they get these gourds that are abnormally large and set them aside for me.
Do you happen to have tabs for this one?
No I don’t. I don’t write out tabs. It’s in effectively double C tuning.
Hey the sound of that banjo is truly amazing, what scale length do you build with?
I use standard banjo scales. This is 25.5" if I remember correctly.
@@LowlyMountainBanjos Thanks for the quick answer, I just got my forst gourds to start building!
@@hermannwagner160 That's wonderful! Glad to hear it.
Man both this and the other baritone banjo you built are amazing sounding. Where can I contact you about potentially buying one of your builds?
Thanks for the kind words. Feel free to send a message to lowlymountainbanjos@gmail.com and I'll be able to connect with you. -Fred
👍👍👍✌️❤️
Is this that Oliver anthony guy that everyone has been talking about?
lol
Whats the scale length?
Standard 25.5”. Thicker strings to achieve the low pitch.
I don't think I could play a fretless banjo.
I have enough trouble playing a fiddle without frets.
Man I want baritone banjo. I'm playing my banjo lowered two steps to F. With 11/26 strings.

I think you should stick to playing. Singing isn't your forte. But I'm in love with the "baritone gourd banjo" !
dont listen to this schmuck i think ur voice is rad. with a little practice it'll sound super unique and interesting
Ignore this slack-jawed drooler.
His voice is perfect for this tune. I'd love to hear more!

Absolutely Beautiful Brother. What a great song
