This fall I'll be releasing a collection of Sacred Christmas songs. It'll be some traditional American folk tunes as well as some adaptations of hymns, chants, and shapenote melodies. Not only are vises and clamps not always necessary, they are often not the best choice and less effective than older methods of workholding. Here is a method for sanding inside circles with holdfasts alone.
Ten Oldtime Banjo Tunings in Two Minutes

Here are ten tunings that I play in. I'm sure I left out many of them so let me know which ones you like and what tunes you play in them.
Mole in the Ground
มุมมอง 1972 หลายเดือนก่อน
It's good, and also fun to play tunes in different tunings from time to time. I typically play Mole in the ground (aka Tempe Roll Down Your Bangs, aka Lizard in the Spring) in gCGCD, but here it's in eCGCE, giving it a much warmer and sparkly vibe, and allowing for some more dissonant chords. What tunes do you play in more than one tuning?

Mountain Banjo Routing

Cutting out the mountain banjo pots is one of the few power tool operations in my shop. Everything has its place and one of the guiding principals of Lowly Mountain Banjos is to not overcomplicate design or process. This typically means human powered hand tools, but not always. A tune I first heard on a recording by the great Louise Foreacre. th-cam.com/video/CVvM_pdkm84/w-d-xo.html This is a good tune for using frilly rolls and open-string pull-offs. Like what you hear? Cumberland Gap on a Lowly Mountain Banjos Tackhead Banjo
Gorgeous tackhead! Love this tune--and well played. I'm working on it right now.
Music is the most powerful force in human history
Everyone now and then I come here and think about the ones I've lost. Thankyou.
Very powerful. Thank you.
those uke strings or what?
Australian Utes, actually.
Aquila Nylgut Classic banjo strings.
Love that head. Looks great.
In heaven we will be able to make music with both halves of a squash if we want to.
Great job !
Love it !
Sounds Beautiful !
Man I want baritone banjo. I'm playing my banjo lowered two steps to F. With 11/26 strings.

One of my favorite clawhammer accompaniment licks. Love it on this banjo.
Wonderful playing!
Sounds great. That's a lovely song.
Glorious sound!
what strings do you have on that banjo?
D’Addario phosphor bronze light gauge.
thank you
@@LowlyMountainBanjos When you're using a light metal string, do you have any neck reinforcement?
Nope.
This has been playing in my head all day today
So good
I’ve really been digging these gourd banjos lately. Such a rich sound to them😊
amazing performance, i found you a year back or so and i always find myself coming back to this one. Your baritone gourd banjo had inspired me to make my own some day and ive had some experience making gourd banjos so im hoping this one goes well haha. also, what kind of gourd did you use for the body? ive never seen one like it! asking for a friend…
Great to hear! I get all my gourds from a local farm. I get to hand pick each one, but they are mostly all cross-pollinated so I’m not sure what the variety would be.
Amazing
Beautiful!
Whats the scale length?
Standard 25.5”. Thicker strings to achieve the low pitch.
Thanks dude. That shit was lit.
Lovely sound...
Ambient track of the year.
Very nice! That was lovely.
Two finger with some brushing? Gives the tune a hypnotic sound. Beautiful mate.
Yeah sort of an index lead two-finger, but still with some clawhammer thrown in. Pull-offs on the drop thumb, open string pull-offs, two strings tuned to E. Makes for a magical sound for sure. Thanks for the kind words.
Your rendition plus that amazing baritone really sound amazing! Great work!!
I just finished talking with a talented young priest Qes Haile Iyesus on this Good Friday about how the Ethiopian Kerar doesn’t sound all that foreign since the Gourd Banjo is a foundational African-American folk instrument and with its bowlback it has a very similar timbre to Ethiopian lyres like the Kerar and Begena, which are central to Ethiopian Orthodox Church hymns. The ‘Young Orthodox Church’ has a selection of hymns translated into English that you might find interesting, and don’t be surprised if someday an Ethiopian comes your way with a worn-out Kerar or Begena in need of some TLC.
I love finding obscure hymns like that. If you could direct me towards those that you mentioned I’d be very grateful. Especially if there are Christmas hymns because I’m thinking of putting together a collection on an album this year. The other information you mentioned is very interesting. Thank you.

@@KofiNateDogg Thank you!
Between your singing and playing and the instrument, this is beautiful.
Nice
I would love a baritone gourd banjo like this. Maybe if its possible to make one fretless that would be a plus. Your instruments are such beautiful creations

Very nice sound!
Take my money
One of my favourite tunes Fred. Nice job on that axe too.
A gorgeous instrument and lovely playing.
Thats a whopper of a gourd banjo!! Excellent performance, do you grow your own gourds?
I get them from a local farm.
What an incredible and unique instrument
Very nice!!
What a sound! Thanks again Fred.
I was a stupid boy and rejected the traditional music beloved y my elders. Today, I just wish I could listen it with them. Foegive me Father, for I sinned.
What kind of strings are you using and how'd you record this? Just a single mic off screen? Double C right? This sounds wonderful, by the way.
Flatwound classical guitar strings and a pair of lav mics hidden under my shrit.
Baritone sounds so good.
I hate this shit
Do you need help or anything?
Far out
Kisses from the NL!!!!!
As Kurt Cobain once said to a heckler, "So why are you here?"
Absolutely gorgeous! "Glory Bound" is one of my all-time favorite Wailin' Jennys songs, and your playing and the banjo really bring the song to life. Thank you so much for sharing this with the world!
Gl!
Such creativity and precision. Your patina looks so good on the instruments you do it on!
Using patina to tell a story. That’s the key.
@@LowlyMountainBanjos It is so beautiful and thoughtfully done. :)
Great intonation! I didn't hear a note out of place!
like that banjo
Still for sale.
The bird chirping at the end was the finishing touch. Well done, brother!
