  • Mikey the macaw had an accident that knocked him unconscious, gave him a short memory loss and was the worst experiences we have had with him. What happened on this day is something we would have never ever expected. Some of the footage in this can be very hard to watch as it’s horrible seeing such a beautiful happy bird in such pain and distress.
This was not something we wanted to share but as the majority of our content is happy fly day vlogs, it’s good to show the bad as well. Mikey will make a 100% full recovery.
Sorry for the long video, we figured it would be best to cover everything and answer any questions you guys had before you asked them.

Hey guys. Really appreciate all the support and love. Mikey has now made a full recovery! To answer the most common question here “Why didn’t you take him straight to the vet” - The moment we had him in the car we called every vet in all of london as our local avian vet was closed. Every vet we called weren’t avian specialists and didn’t have a clue what to do with birds or have the equipment to deal with him or had very little to no experience with birds. We went home to keep looking as it seemed better than sitting in the car. It wasn’t until we got home that we were recommended by a free flight friend of ours about the 24/7 emergency avian vet in Swindon and went straight there.
The only reason we put him on the floor was because it would’ve been stupid to put him on a perch and we had to take him out of the carrier to get him in the house as the carrier has to be folded down to be removed from the car.
We are so grateful on the amazing recovery he made so stay tuned for more happy fly vlogs.
Watch him back in the skies here - th-cam.com/video/c2nZbiVqZMo/w-d-xo.html
    Love xx

Funny side story on this but hopefully a mood lifter: I used to work front desk at a circus school where this one student would always leave her dog in the lobby with me during her weekly class. Every single week, 5-10 minutes before her 2 hour class would get out this dog would start to whine/cry, he sounded exactly like a grieving human being, every person in the lobby would try to console him but he just didn't care. But that sadness would always be immediately counteracted as soon as she got out of class by the dog literally jumping for joy. Like, a teeny tiny dog bouncing 3-4 feet into the air repeatedly. This dog was just very intensely emotional and extremely bonded to it's owner, he would look like the sadest most dejected animal in the world any time she left the room, but in her presence he was just immediately full of joy. She jokingly called herself his "emotional support human".

The most human thing from an animal I have heard is after my dog had been operated after accidently swallowing an entire pigeon skull.
My mother had gone to work and I was in bed and I was woken up. What could only be described as a sound that sounded like the most devestasted human ghost ever.

@@Dubanx I 100% agree! Actually this situation is really similar to when my uncle was bit really badly by his dog who had gotten off her leash and sprinted into traffic and was hit by a car. When he ran after her and she was in shock, she bit him very badly. She was a black lab, not some "vicious pit bull man eater" (even though I don't believe that stuff personally, but if you want to assume it was probably a breed with a bad reputation, it wasn't)
Animal instincts are just that, instincts. Not something they would do under normal circumstances. (Full disclosure the dog made a full recovery as well)

Yes I agree. Whenever I have full on panic attacks, that's exactly how I become. As soon as I heard his screams and observed his body, I recognized it as the symptoms of a panic attack. The poor little guy had just gone through something traumatic, it's only natural and normal for him to have an attack. The best thing to do is either hold him or leave him alone in a safe area where he can't hurt himself. Obviously holding him didn't work, so leaving him alone would've been best.

@Desiree Bernert Excuse me but I can damn well put you into this "lil cubbie" because you are exactly the kind of person I strongly abhor. Clipping a birds wings because of an accident. What was your point telling me about your bird I by the way very much feel empathy for? This poor thing getting its wings clipped like so many other birds that should be free flight trained instead of lazily taken away their ability that they are living for. It's just fucking sad having a bird for so long without being capable of properly training it so it will a hundred percent not fly away. Sexual maturity doesn't have anything to do with this but you will not understand. People like you shouldn't have birds as you clearly are not capable of giving it what it deserves. All this I can confidently take out of your stupid statements you are making. And don't you even dare estimating my age when you clearly have a terrible way of expressing. I can hardly understand what you even mean. Get rid of those stupid dots you are making everywhere and start making grammatically correct sentences if you don't want to seem like a 10 year old.

I can relate to the fear and pain of a pet being confused and terrified and not being able to help them. My beagle Dixie started having seizures due to old age and the first time she had one all I could do was sit there and watch while she convulsed and struggled to breathe. After she came out of it all she could do was lay there with a terrified look in her eyes and scream. It was like she couldn’t see me. It was the most terrible, heartbreaking sound I have ever heard in my life. Thankfully we were able to take her to the vet the next day and got her some meds that stopped the seizures from happening. She passed away about six months later (she was 13 and had other complications from old age). I hope I will never have to hear a sound like that again and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.

I don't know very much about birds, but I always felt the act of clipping a bird's wings, stealing away from them the gift of flight, makes me feel sick. Taking a creature who can explore the sky and locking them in a small cage their whole life seems cruel to me. I'm a dog person, to me it's like getting a puppy and then having it's legs amputated. I think it's amazing that you take your parrot out often so he can fly around. Before this video I had never heard of free flying, like I said I don't know anything about birds. It seriously made me happy to see these guys out for a fly. I'm glad he is okay from his crash. *edit* Yeah that aftermath was hard to watch. Wow I'm glad to know he recovered. Reminds me of when my dog stepped in a big jaw trap while swimming in a local pond. (Someone was trying to trap a beaver, illegally, as this was private property we had permission to use) She screamed like a human. But made a full recovery. You obviously love your birds and take very good care of them.

I would like to say, I have a cocktail named Buddy. He is my world I love him so much. I rescued him at a few years old. His wings were clipped when I rescued him. So I let his wings grow out. As soon as he could fly I quickly realized he was a danger to himself. He would often fly into the fan, into glass, and into walls. I tried to train him but it was no use. I made the extremely hard decision to clip his wings. While I hate to do that to him I believed it was in his best interest. He can still fly a bit and glide to close areas. I also carry him all over. I hope you can understand my reasoning behind my decision. I only ever want the best for my buddy.

It’s irresponsible not to clip a birds wings in the summer. They like to go outside with me but no way i’d let them go outside if they could fly away and never be seen again.
But macaws are different, they’re very intelligent and don’t get scared as easily so probably won’t fly away in a frenzied panic.

Severe concussion, and a Schirmer tear test (STT) and the phenol red thread test (PRTT) next time stop the vet and make sure he explains clearly to you. It can take 1 month for a concussion to heal, and can have permanent behavior issues. Pain meds for the 1 month. I would advise not let that bird free fly for 2 months , that being said he needs rehab 30 days of rest and re bonding. Then you can start to retrain him to free fly is important to help him re- establish and confirm the behaviors associated especially the reinforcement used. He will need to confirm his own trust and yours for a complete recovery . The initial protocol for a injured bird is a dark warm safe spot. Keep a close check on his vision a torn retina can be life time issue and take 2 to 6 weeks to heal no head jerking motions.. This just my opinion so take it with a grain of salt . It is so painful to see family get severely hurt....
Never assume the bird knows what you think he has mastered step by step.
So Glad he survive an incredible impact very lucky and I wish you both the very best of rehab.
    Thanks for such great videos.

When I was about 8 or 9 I ran into a balcony (it was like 5ft above ground level, I'm 5'3 and has always been), it was insane.
I lost consciousness but apparently I screamed for a good 10 minutes - not even recognising my own screams. I just heard my nose crack against my skull and a hard thud when I hit the ground.
    I thought I was dead.
I wasn't myself for weeks (whilst it's clearly child neglect, my father never took me to a hospital), I was on the couch bleeding murder and talking nonsense for a month.
I can't imagine what it is to a sane parent, no matter what species of the "child", to see them in so much pain.
I'm glad he's recovering and I hope your finger is healing fine! ♡

  • @CleanSheet1191987

Yeah it looks to me like he had a severe case of concussion and in shock. I’ve personally lost count of the times I’ve been concussed, and I can honestly say that for a human, with a minor concussion, it generally takes about 2 weeks to start feeling better in the head, but it still takes over a month before you start to feel normal again. He also would’ve been in a lot of pain and tremendous shock, so his reaction isn’t that much of a surprise. Not a good reaction to go through, but not surprising either. When you have concussion, you don’t feel fully balanced and you certainly don’t want anyone or anything to touch you. But once the pain starts to heal, you do start feeling sorry for yourself and do get a bit sooky. I could imagine that for a bird, it wouldn’t be that much different. Hence why he is cuddling up to you now. He’s healing but still wouldn’t be feeling 100% in the head right now. I bet that within a month, he’ll be a little bit closer to being his normal self, but won’t forget it in a hurry. He’ll always be a little bit more cautious now.
