You don't get a lawyer because you don't know the law. It is not that hard, atleast for me to know the technicalities. The lawyers are basically brokers. They help you in getting acceptable results. They know the insiders, sometimes even the judges. You pay them to be your representative in an otherwise corrupt judiciary system. If you are a regular citizen, getting justice based on facts alone is next to impossible for you. So, it pays to have a lawyer who can grease a few palms for you.

Your comment makes no sense. Laws are not rules. Rules are written in clear and unambiguous language. But the laws are different. Laws are based on interpretations. How you interpret law and how a judge understands your interpretations and gives the judgment in your favor, is what lawyers are trained in.
Laws only apply to common men; the rich can always find a loophole because this is what laws do. In the past, Britishers used laws to control their colonies. The laws were framed in such a way that they always favored the Britishers. Our lawmakers framed the Indian Constitution by inheriting the same colonial laws. The only difference is that Britishers were replaced by rich and powerful people in the Indian Constitution.

The man tried hard. I can give that to him. But there is a reason why law is one of the hardest professions. There is a reason why every barrister is not a lawyer and why every lawyer is not an advocate. There are many rules and regulations about what kind of government documents could be used in the court and in which format they should be presented. Even to file a petition, you need to follow a certain document format and use your words very carefully. That's why they say everything and anything you say can be used against you in the court of law. If you present a very important document in the court impromptu, it will still not be considered as evidence by the judge if it is not mentioned in the heads-up. It will not be considered if the petition is not properly formatted. The guy thought he could fight the case as long as he has proper evidence and as long as the evidence makes sense to a normal man. That's not how law works. He should consult a lawyer or advocate.

Government does provide free legal aid to citizens if they are unable to hire a lawyer because of financial constraints. But those lawyers may or may not be competent enough. But they are definitely well rehearsed with legal procedures than ordinary citizens. This guy doesn't exactly sound as if he needs to be pitied. Hearing his argument, he must be very well aware of the free legal aid but must be over-confident about himself. Must have watched too many movies and dramas around law.
