Certainly, it's a wierd sensation to love music at 40 that I loved in 5th grade. I don't even remember my age in 5th grade?! But there's no forgetting I was into Depeche. And even after all these years of countless hours spent listening to countless genres and genres within genres, and loving a lot of it, getting bored and also forgetting a lot of the stuff I loved, Depeche still sounds great and relatable on much of their stuff. Still a bizarre experience to comprehend liking something at 40 I thought was the coolest at in elementary school. I mean they were never Bowie/ Ferry to me, but who is? Good to know that Gahn survived the dark 90's, as I did, both of us seemingly barely. Enjoy the Silence in particular still sounds sparkling and new, while But Not Tonight still evokes an immense emotional response, it's meaning changing from year to year. While it's very clear to me what the zenith was for smiths, cure, thier top 2 songs clearly separated from the rest, that's not the case with the MODE. Perhaps they did really write the best songs of their contemporaries, whether played on an acoustic guitar, keyboard, piano, bongos, phone dial plus a voice, it doesn't matter, (no pun), so many hold up as stellar. While other groups add to a songs greatness with tone or production style or whatever, take a lyric sheet out for one of Depeches great ones and just sing it acapella. It sounds great. I think there is something to be said for a song not needed to rely on sonics for its greatness. Because, that's not really a song, is it? That's just a track. The world will always need stories and need songs, as much next year as it did 30 years ago. It's elementary.
these 80's Dance shows have live play of bands like a mini concert, yet some think it more important to Dance instead of watching! "I just gotta Dance!" Their loss, luckily it was filmed..

That's one of the things that seperated Depeche from other "stand there and sip my rolling rock" indie kind of bands and audiences. Depeche fans couldn't stand still. The shows I went to it wouldn't have mattered if you strapped the crowd down to their chairs, they were gonna dance and sing go a bit bat shit. Sooooo over concerts full of people lifelessly standing, sitting, sipping, and phoning! Their gain, your loss. You do get that at their core Depeche is a synth DANCE pop group right?
For goodness sake. That version of Told You So was so dancey you'd have to. The solo with Wilder could have gone on a lot longer and I would danced every minute. Even Gahan was encouraging people to dance. Dance and have fun. Not sit around chin stroking.

I had this as a 12" single when it first came out. I'm now 55 years old. I still play it now
