@@jameer8225 when I first found the video of the ballet and then subsequent performances of the chosen one my father and I would watch the dancers to see if they were continually hitting the timpani which does not stay regular as you know. We deduced that Pietragalla and Margarita Simonova killed

Oh how I would have loved to play this in my days as a timpanist in school and university. Sadly the most advanced piece I ever got to play in was Dvorak's 9th. That Scherzo is loads of fun though, having to count against the beat the entire time. What I find especially interesting about this video is that one actually realizes that the timpani part of Sacre is so big that it takes up half of the entire playing time of the piece.

Great video! Took me back some 45 years when I played timp and percussion in college/Grad school. Kudos on your French rolls... very reminiscent of the great Vic Firth!
Obviously a mistake was made ... it was supposed to be a recording of the horn section (judging by the mic placement) and someone unknowingly knocked the camera and moved it to the tympani. LMAO!

Question. How does this work? I would think most orchestras can't afford to hire two timpanists as I suspect pieces requiring two are rare. If I am right how do you get a second one? Borrow from anther orchestra? I am truly curious.
At the end of the day, timpanists are just percussionists. That said, an orchestra's principal timpanist usually only ever plays the timpani. But if a piece requires a second (or third timpanist) another musician from the percussion section will sub in. Most orchestras have at least 4-5 percussionists, so it isn't a big deal.
And I thought I was the only one who noticed it. Then again I have no two recorcings of this (and I have way too many) where there is a musical consensus on how they should be played. Every conductor seems to have a different idea. My personal favourite solution is that in the Seji Ozawa recording.

This orchestra is so not together. Strings off tempo French horns cracking notes woodwinds are so off pitch it’s not even funny, and intonation is treacherous! Timpani players are killing it. Thank god!

@@princepsangelusmors horns sound very different from in front of the orchestra. When you get sound directly from their bells it doesn’t resonate the same way
Look Victor , I am an experienced player, believe me that if you play too close to the edge than the skin won’t resonate well and the sound will be pale as it is on this recording . but of course you can play as you want , these are just kind suggestions

Pretty raggedy orchestra. And some weirdly slow tempi in places.
I think its just the phone sound quality. Personally i think they sound great

Ok , but the sound is just better ig play a bit farer from the edge bit more to the center ...
Every set of timps are different and the tecnique you use. According to my style of playing that’s the best spot for those timps

Roland Dénes most timps are supposed to be played just a couple inches from the edge which is where he is playing
