It has come to my attention that the TRX does actually have a clutched AWD setting on the transfer case, but it's programmed to allow more holding force for torque being sent to the front end. So, it likely would work better than the 48-11 but still not as good as the 48-12. Get the 48-12 in the Rebel!!
I have watched a few youtube videos and some people dont have the esc fully turned off could that be part of the problem 🤔
If it's a pressure type deal there's gotta be a work around. Thicker fluid create more pressure? Is it the same transfer case but one different part that we can swap in?that's the kinda stuff I'd like to know and I'm sure in time we will know .like how everyone is switching to the hellcat oil pump . I heard somewhere (could of been here)that some rams that seem to have an issue with the 4x4 system.not engaging quickly came down to tolerances .someone tore a few apart and noticed ones that didn't engage quickly had more tolerances .they added a shim and it worked much better .
User error, and blames it on the transfer case!
Also, it's not and was not intended to be AWD!
Wow. Had my Ram since 2019. We have heavy snow winters. I used mine several times. Even pulling people out from being stuck and never had an issue.

I have a 2020 ram with the e-torque with the auto 4wheel drive. I’ve went out and did donuts in the winter in 4 high and never had a problem. Pulled my buddy out of a ditch in 4low with no issues.
Many people have had this transfer case issue and the dealership fixed it being a faulty sensor in the transfer case.

I bet I can tell exactly what happened. You didn't disable the eac by holding it down for 10 sec, drove the trail in 4 low engaging and disengaging the clutches with every turn and slippage (this happens with esc on and is the benefit of this part time case) then by the tome you got to these guys your fluid was heated up and then the slippage you had pulling the guys out over heated it.
I've had my 2014 for 6 years and anytime I do any real 4x4 or getting stuck in snow I turn off esc and it pulls out of anything. I've never been stuck and pulled down many trees and stumps. Never overheated once with the older 44-44 system.
I have the Ram 1500 Badlander with the same transfer case and have used 4wd a lot without any overheating. 4 auto , 4 low, 4 hi with no issues.....
I have a 2021 RAM 1500 4x4 5.7 3.21 gear and it will pull a stump. I don't understand what happened here. Also, it would be good to follow up on what the resolution was because a lot of people will take this as gospel and potentially not buy a very good truck. Was the traction control/stability really turned off? what was the end solution? I like your vids but need some follow through...we'll leave the light on for you
I have a 2019 ram with this transfer case and I work in the oilfield and I use 4hi and 4lo all the time pulling heavy trailers and its been 3 years no issues. Guess I'm lucky
Mine just did this today 2020 6800 miles on it. Just bought it. Tried to get a Tacoma out of the sand at the beach....I was so disappointed
I roasted the same transfer case in my 2021 EcoDiesel and I will never own a 4WD system with a wet clutch setup again.
I’m in Australia and I have given my Ram hell in the sand all day and never had an issue.
That's why I got me a 2022 frontier .regular part time 4x4 .hydraulic steering etc. Made like an older truck when a truck was actually a truck.none of the Atkinson cycle bullshit,plastic beds,fake 4x4 etc
19 Ram Limited 4X4 here- beat mine off road especially in snow and it gripped, spun alot as well, for hours with no overheating or failure. Drivin like that dozens of times no issues.
I have 2022 Eco-Diesel Ram RED Limited, and I average 19.5 MPG city and 29 MPG on the highway, and I lose about 1-2 MPG towing around 2,500 LBS. I just went from Chicago to West Virginia and touched 31 MPG for quite a while on average. I do have to say that I LOVE my truck, and this is the first NEW truck I have bought that was not a Chevy or GMC and with all of the problems GM is having right now I might not be buying another newer GM vehicle again.
I would think most 4x4 Auto transfercases are going to have clutches. Maybe the problem lies with the oversized tires and 3.21 gears. Has the computer been calibrated for the bigger tires?

I made sure when I bought my 3500 and 5500 i spec’d in the floor shift manual 4x4. If it’s a dial ,I don’t smile.

Thats odd, I have a 2022 Ram 1500 with that same case and I drove it through a foot of wet snow in 4x4 high with no issues for miles. Including steep off-road hills, did they do anything in 2022 differently?
I just saw an article today in Car and Driver magazine where they tested a brand new Chevy Silverado ZR2 and had the exact same problem while on a trail. Sigh...
so it's a transfer case problem then . borg warner makes them for ram must make it for Chevy as well

I have a 2019 Laramie with the same transfer case I was at Nolin lake a few weeks ago and it did that to me for the first time ever. I was just on a loose gravel and put it in 4 auto about 5 minutes into it got the same light. Now I know why. Thank you for the info.
Never had that in my 2020 rebel but I hear its got the better system despite not having auto 4WD.
Read that you need to turn your traction control and stability off.
I ordered my Rebel with the electronic shift on the fly system (4wd auto) so I guess I’ll find out. It doesn’t snow much in Louisiana and I doubt I’ll be pulling people out of mud holes. Guess I’ll have to see how it does.
I did that research prior to purchase and thats why I went with the Rebel with the proper transfer case
My ‘02 Silverado has auto 4wd and it has never failed. I even yanked on a coal truck loaded with 7 tons of dirt that was buried in my yard. Broke the strap, wasn’t able to pull the truck out. I’ve abused that truck and the 4wd has never failed me. Newer trucks with auto 4wd are junk.
Good to know and good thing I just got a 2024 1500 without the 4wd auto option, I got a tradesman which I'll mainly use for work, I got the warlock package on it, which I'm hoping is one of the off road packages he's talking about, it has a rear locker so I'm hoping it'll be good on snow and dirt if I ever take it offroad, I also have a 2023 Gladiator Mojave which is my heavy snow or offroad toy but it's still good to be able to use the Ram on heavy snow and even occasional off road trips (I love my Mojave but that 5.7 Hemi will be a lot more fun on the sand dunes).

RAM Tradesman uses the 48-12 transfer case.
It's an option on the rebel as well.

My truck in 4Lo lasts about 5min before throwing "service 4wd" system. Not even pulling anything, just mild up hill climb or when using descent control.
This is not an issue at all . I beat my 19 to death . Never had an overheat issue . Same transfer case .
I wish these companies install dial shift knows would stick them you know where, and go back to column shifter.

That’s not normal for it to slip and overheat that quickly. I’ve had two 2019s and I have used 4x4 quite a bit without any issues. I have heard of a few that have your issues, but there is a problem with the clutch in the transfer case.
2013 ram..got several service ABS system alarms plus 4x4 disabled with them.. I reset it a few times and haven't had it again..my jeep has a manual 4x4 shifter thats dependable
interesting about the transmission as i didn't know that is how they did it on some models. I'll have to have a look at mine to figure out what I've got in my 4th gen. maybe it's just in the 5th gen as i haven't had any problems as yet. even mud hog tyres would have had trouble in that bog hole because it looked like the bike's bottomed out and we're sitting on the skid plates . lucky they came out easily with a tug
I used mine in 4 high for 3 days on silver lake sand dunes and never had any issue. No 4 low use.
proper way is a good kinetic rope and give it a good jerk. a lot easier on your drivetrain
Good afternoon! I'm just choosing a car for myself and I like rebel, but without the box with 4wd auto. But many of my friends prefer 4wd auto, they say that it is much more comfortable on snow-covered roads or roads with different surfaces in the city or on the highway and has no speed limits, and with part-time, especially on snow-covered roads, some are very scared to drive. What do you think about this, how safe is it to use 48-12, for example, on a snow-covered highway?
As far as if it's safe to run on a snow-covered highway with the 48-12 on 4 High, I think it's not recommended you go higher than 45 MPH with these transfer cases on 4 High. At least that's what I would limit myself, anyway if the conditions are really bad it might be unwise in any case to go faster.
I have experience with both transfer cases and live in Canada where the weather and road conditions can be awful in the winter. Regardless of the so-called "superiority" of the 48-12 cases, the reality is that the 48-11 is the best one for 95% of customers. I currently have the 48-11 on my 2023 Ram 1500 Sport (although I elected to get the LSD or anti-slip option, I recommend it).
The 48-11 is highly polyvalent and can handle a great variety of road conditions without putting undue stress on the drivetrain and transfer case due to higher speeds or sometimes having mixed pavement/snow/wet conditions. It can also be reasonably competent in 4WD Lock and 4WD Low at off-roading on muddy camp trails or forest roads (nothing insanely crazy or rock crawling), again especially with the LSD option to minimize the problems in off-roading of open diffs. For quite snowy roads where 4WD Auto may not seem responsive or safe enough, 4WD Lock can actually be used up to 60 MPH without a problem.
The transfer case with full mechanical lock that is often talked about as being "superior" is only superior actually in very few circumstances: in real, serious off-roading (although even there, a winch and a friend in a second truck is best), or if your truck is going to be used as a snow plough or towing people out often.
You didn't say what's going to be your use case for your truck, but unless you live in a remote rural area and go hunting and fishing in the wilderness, the 48-11 is totally fine if the vast majority of your travel is on roads.

I plan to use the truck as a car for constant trips around the city and the highway, travel and work, as well as to carry a trailer with machinery and equipment. I am engaged in the installation of automatic irrigation systems and landscaping. I live in Russia, we have similar weather with Canada. We have snow for about 4 months a year and there are difficult situations on the roads - so I'm worried if I can move around the highways normally with such a drive. I don't buy cars very often, so I want to be sure of my choice.
@@polivcentr Russian winter can be pretty extreme. Even in Canada we sometimes say when it is awfully frigid that there is a "Siberian cold outside today" 🙂
I think the 48-11 might be the better compromise as you are doing lots of city and highways where 4WD Auto and 4WD Lock will do the job very well at any speed and you aren't going to feel the "crabbing" effect on pavement of the locked rear differential of the 48-12 when turning at slow speed.

4wd auto is amazing have a 22 rebel with it, I've also had it bound up and stuck pretty good and had no 4wd issues.
I have the same transfer case in my 2021 5.7, 3.92 gears. Had it in 2wd and got the same message when the rear tires had been spinning.
Maybe learn how to properly use what you have? 2020 ram rebel has gone through everything I've pointed it at, mud, snow, ice, creek crossings, etc...
...Pretty sure the Rebel uses the 48-12 transfer case. I wanna say Rebels all use the older 4x4 setup, but I'm too lazy to actually research it.

Someone on the 4th Gen Ram forums was producing a Lock Switch that could send a continuous signal to lock the clutch when needed. Wonder if it’s possible on the 5th Gen.

2:40 I can guess what ur gonna say. and yeah.. 4x4 auto isn't really built for mud and off roading. 4X4 Auto transfer case was really designed around Snow and Asphalt. The Auto is full of clutches.... it's just a different setup than the older Transfer cases. Next time, (if you really want this type of 4x4) look for a truck that does not have 4x4 Auto. They're outthere... they just aren't very common on the 1500's. 2500's I'm pretty sure don't have the 4x4 Auto, at all. (and a good number of them even have the linkage shifter, instead of the push button crap)

My now long since totaled '14 would do the same thing,the 4wd would just shut down if it was spinning too fast such as trying to get out of the dry lake clay after a good rain,found it to be odd.

i have a 2018 tradesman with 6.4 litre in it,mine has an actuall transfercase shifter down on the floor like the older trucks from the 60s and 70s,i wonder if it will have same issue?
My 2019 has this transmission and I have used 4Auto every time it rains or snows. I have pulled out many stuck vehicles in both 4H and 4L and have never had an issue like this during my 162k miles. I think that there must be something wrong with your transfer case. Mine does have the 392 dif.
Id recommend a 2500 to you. With either powerplant or transmission. You will be able to help somebody out of a jam next time

4H is more for momentum style 4x4 selection (a running start into stuff).
Gearing is the same as 2x4, in otherwords.
4L is like a .5 of a gear (so ur max speed is about half, too). It's High RPM with more than enough torque to spin tires from a standstill with zero effort.
(So which one would u choose?)

you need some snatch straps.... no straps with hooks.... too dangerous. That also would have gotten the truck out easier.
So 4wd auto I can understand the clutch not being connected the whole time and creating heat from connecting and disconnecting etc multiple times but what if u put it in 4wd high or low?will the clutch be engaged the whole time?if u had it low range and the wheels are spinning I could see it going over 25mph and stressing the system

4x4 Auto is the give away that you have that type of transfer case that he didn't like... And he does't like it, because the clutch system is always active... doesn't matter what mode you have it on. That's really all he's saying.
As for the over heating thing... well. 4x4 auto style transfer case was not designed to help yo-yo's who get themselves buried to the axles, like that....(I'd go as far at to say that all the other guys that didn't help...made the smart call.) Besides he wasn't going 25mph... he was going 0mph and the transfer case and likely the traction control, just couldn't cope (and likely because he was on a hard surface... probably wouldn't have overheated as fast if he was on looser stuff. Though... he probably would have been buried, too, if it was...).
How did you fix the problem?

ZF transmission are some of the best if not the best in the road.
So you not knowing the capabilities of your 4WD system is some how the systems fault? There is know way with everything you do with a truck you should have a 1500 anyway. Get a Ram2500 Hemi and be done with your complaining about a light duty truck.
Some things you do just assume though.....like a 4wd truck should be able to yank on something without overheating in about a min. My neighbors truck did in about 45sec yesterday in the snow and a day later its stuck in 4low. Yeah so shame on this guy for not knowing the limits of his truck!

If they would offer to pay, why not, but why should anyone be obligated to do something for free? Look what happened when you did it, you messed up your clutch packs. Did they offer to repair your truck? NOPE. So i totally understand why people dont want to put wear and tear on their vehicles, and they don't have to feel guilty about it because you are angry about it... Go Pound Sand.
