I've had this problem for YEARS! It got to where I had to put it in neutral to start it and set the parking brake every time I went to park. I figured my transmission was going or something so I didn't bother getting it looked at. I just got a hunch to see if someone on TH-cam had a fix and sure enough, THIS WAS IT! Thanks a million for posting this video!!!
Thanks you saved my day. I found a bolt on the floor. I hunted high and low and couldn't find out where it came from. After taking the covers off the shifter and steering wheel and still no idea where it went I googled the problem. Your video came up and sure enough it was where you said. Thanks again 5 minuets and it was fixed.
Thank you for this video, my 2000 Ranger with 145,000 miles would not start in park for two weeks. The advice I was given for a fix was to replace the neutral safety switch , but I just knew it was something with the column shifter. So I found your video and you are exactly right ! Both bolts were loose and not so easy to reach , but with your instructions and the threadlocker goop the truck starts in park with no problem. YOU ARE THE MAN !! Happy New Year and stay golden
3/6/2022. I am ‘stun’ that this fixed my problem. When I looked at the two bolts, they were flushed against the bracket and thought, this isn’t the problem. Wrong! When I pushed the bracket inwards, now I could see how loose the bolts are. Who would think! By far the hardest part is getting my hand in there. I THANK YOU so much! I really mean that-Ken. 👽
Awesome! Years ago I made this video just incase this happened again someday and I thought that it may help a few others. Never would have guessed that this video would have about 100 k views. 👍
So this IS a very common problem with Rangers… darn. But how do you fix it so that the PRNDL display on the dash is properly calibrated, arrow-to-letter?? 🤷🏻♀️
You're my hero.. Sometimes I'd put it in park and the truck kept slipping on the pawl. I bet if I went to a transmission place they would have told me they need to take the tranny apart and charged a fortune. I tightened up those 2 screws and now the truck sticks sung in park. Thanks!
Just got mine apart to replace the tube bushings but ALSO found these loose bolts. THANKS!!! While in there I remembered this video and indeed my bolts are loose as well! I believe the major problem is the loose bolts not the bushings but I will fix both!
Just replaced the whole shifter cable on a friends car with the issue of it not going into park. After that didn’t work I came across your video. 2 hours of work that could’ve been done in 2 minutes, thank you
I'm glad to have watched your video which taught me not only how to fix the shifter but that the gas cap is not the only thing on Ranger pickups that have problems. Thanks a million!! Awesome video!
Just got a new truck with this problem only went into park 1 out of every 7 times and you had to ram it to get there so I just put it into neutral but this was the fix!
This fix worked like a charm! My biggest problem was trying to get my big fat arm up in there to get a tool on it. It took about 10 minutes tops. Maybe next time I'll get a contortionist....! Thanks for the info!
It's not easy reaching up and moving the wires out of the way carefully. The last thing that a person wants to do is damage the wires. Especially the air bag ones.
Thanks for this video. I was getting stuck in park. I found that the only possible way to see under the dash was to set an ice chest outside the door to lay on. Those two screws indeed loose.
I just looked this up today hoping I’d find a video on how to replace the speed column because mines been not going to park properly and found your video instead. This is why I love TH-cam and people like yourself who share knowledge/how to’s. Thank you bro this fixed the issue.🤝🫡💯
i just finished mine an hour ago. I found that to get in there I could set an ice chest outside the door so I could lay on my back. It was the only way.
for anyone that doesnt have a torx, you can use an allen hex for it to get it fairly tight. it may not stay tight as long, but it will help you in a crunch
Watched video, located locktite and torch bit set, crawled under steering wheel, done. 20 min from start of video to putting away the tools.....Thank You
Just watched this video and yeap that was the problem...my truck wouldnt go into park and a bolt fell in the floor board..I took steering cover off and couldnt find where it went. Got fustrated and put cover back on and a few choice words came in house a went to youtube and man thank goodness I did but one thing you didnt mention in your video that its a pain in the beep to get to where the bolt goes...I thot I was gonna have to get help getting back outa the floor board after I got under the dash shhhhh lol..but thanks alot for the video very helpful
This was my second expedition under the steering column..... first time was to get the red line shift lever indicator in place over the correct gear I was in and should have tightened the two torq screws at that time.... but put it back together.... and later, I saw this video.... getting good at taking off the plastic panel and then the metal panel behind it because honestly there is so little room unless you do take off the two facade panels..... and even then I found out that to tighten the bracket screws you don't need to go to Harbor Freight for a flexible extension.... but, you can simply get the torq bit to fit in a small socket and tape it in place so it doesn't fall out..... and reach up and feel for the two screws because if you try to look and reach for them, they are hard to see and you have to be a contortionist on your back to look and reach at the same time.... feeling for them while simply sitting on the Ranger floor and then without looking, you can tighten them with the torq tool.... One thing I did not do and wish I had.... was to use the thread lock on it.... but so far it is doing just fine and if it happens again, I will know what to do.... The worst was the hood lock release removal but after two times, I even have that figured out (I masking tape the two screws onto the bit)..... Now I can reliably back my boat trailer down the ramp, put the Ranger in park and feel pretty sure that it is going to stay in park..... while I load/unload the boat.... and no, the parking brake is a mess... doesn't function and isn't going to..... $$$$ that isn't in the budget.....
Very helpful, thanks. Not easy at all to get to that top bolt, but I got it and it feels WORLDS better, no more having to throw it into park with the force of a thousand men. Edit: I didn't use thread lock, just because I had none on hand, any idea how long it takes to get loose again? If it gets loose again I might thread lock it, but that's future Wade's problem.
Great Tutorial. Just put my 99 Ranger in D yesterday at Sam’s Club, and it just revved up, going nowhere fast. Put it in L, and was able to drive. P + R still works. Now, how can I make sure the dash display gets properly calibrated; Arrow-to-letter, when the bolts are tightened? (I noticed your dash display is not) I only have 100K on my - always garaged - 99. Also, I am original owner. I want it to be 100% copacetic, because I plan on bequeathing it to one of my grandkids.
Ok, but once im down under there i cant seem to get any room to use my arms, i cant get at the screws. If i had tentacles i could do this, how the hell did you get to it? I feel like im snaking my arms around levers and around shafts.
Thanks for the video, I have a 2000 and this video helped but one of the screws actually broke off last night when I was shifting it into gear, your video was a great help but now the remaining part of the screw is still in there, the other screw seems fine albeit the lever is loose now. Not sure if you will see this but really at a loss and would hate to take it to a shop and pay out for for a simple screw. Any ideas would be much appreciated... I am really between a rock and hard place.
My grandma has a Ford ranger from 1999 or 2000 sometimes she has to put it in neutral and it starts its starts in park to just not all the time when she puts it in park it will start to roll her gear cable is loose I think
I have a 95 ranger and tightened both of mine and I still have slop and trouble going through gears. Mainly trying to get it to stay into park position. I have to hold it up into park or go to neutral to start it. Do you think my cable is my issue? Again both hex bolts are tight. Originally they were loose in thread locked and tightened them. And still am having issues. Please help
I have resolved my issue. If anyone else experiences this problem after tightening the two screws as shown in this video. Lower your steering column 4 - 13mm nuts. Remove the black plastic housing behind steering wheel. This will give you access to the shift tube. That is mounted on top of your steering column. The problem is usually the 2 plastic bushings that are on the shift tube. They either move from where they are supposed to be, which is under both shift tube mounting u straps. My issue was both plastic bushings were wore out, and the one closest to my steering wheel had moved towards the firewall about 3 inches. And my strap closest to the firewall was actually completely broken. So when trying to shift the shifter this allowed the entire shift tube to move. Instead of being held firmly in place. A quick trip to advance auto and $23.00 later I had a new metal u strap with bushing and I purchased the other bushing. Replaced those items bolted everything back up and it works like a charm. No more slop or play. It's very tight like when it was new. I hope this helps others that experience the same problem that I had.
Will it shift into gear? About 2 months ago I had the steering shift tube break in the column. I didn't make a video replacing it, but it took me about 3 hours to replace it.
When my shift tube broke it wouldn't shift at all. This is a good video if you need to replace it.th-cam.com/video/DycAAYxn3bM/w-d-xo.html&index=1&list=WL
Does this issue make the truck not start? Like nothing will happen because it's not fully engaging in park? I'm gonna check this out tomorrow and see if those are loose! Thank you for this video!
How did you gain access to the shift bracket you tightened? I'm a small guy and there's no way I could contort my body to even see the screws little a lone tighten them. Did you have to take the driver side seat out? Maybe the lower panel ?
I pushed the seat back and you can remove the lower panel for easier access. It's a little tight and you do have reach up to tighten the bolts. I also moved the wires some, but be careful not to damage them. About 2 weeks ago I had to retighten the bolts and it only took about 15 minutes. A few months ago the shift tube broke and that was about a 3 hour job. Overall the Ranger has been a good truck since I bought it 5 1/2 years ago.
I just bought this 2004 a couple of weeks ago and I'm I'm in the process of buttoning every thing up and good , well, as much as I can. Did the locktite not work so well? I tried every contortion I could think of with out contacting Guinness Book of Records, and I just could not seem to get in there. I'm a small guy too. I guess I'll keep on trying to figure out something. I'm 64, so I don't bend as easy as I used to. :) Thanks, for your reply. It's a great how to video.
You would think that the locktight would hold longer than 1 1/2 years. I'm not sure if the 04 is that much different than my 99. Good Luck and I hope that you can get to it. It is a tight area to work around with little room for tightening the bolts.
uptrail71 I think I'll use a silicone adhesive. maybe then it will hold and still be able to loosen up if needed. But I don't see that needed for a long time.
I had my shaft break a few months ago. That was about a 3 hour job to replace it. The bolts would have been an easy fix like when I made this video. Overall my Ranger has been a good truck since I bought it over 5 years ago.
Are most Ranger owners small and young? I'm slim, about 6' tall but 80 years old, and while I can visualize the site, I can't crawl deep enough under the dash to get my arms at working angles. My wife is older than me and my office manager is a DD and they're no help either! I started to disassemble the dash, but that's also becoming a nightmare.
Well I'm LITERALLY in the middle of being stuck with my foot on the er brake that doesn't work apparently unless I keep my foot on it and the damn truck won't go into Park to restart and ALSO apparently the battery decided to also say F IT and now there's NO electricity or power and I'm. Just stuck
@@ChildofGod314 That's not good. Make sure the 2 bolts shown in this video are tightened so it will go into park to start. This was a good truck, but the engine died a few years ago.
I push the seat back and lay on the floor. I'm a bigger guy, but it would make it a lot easier for a smaller person. You don't get a lot of work room in the Ford Rangers!
It's easier to work on it removing the plate, but I still had good access for tightening the bolts. Always be careful around the wires. You don't want to force them to move. It's also a good idea to disconnect the battery. I never owned a van, but being a 1998 Ford it should be similar.
When I checked One of my fasteners is missing. Do you know what size I would need to buy?
Sorry I don't know what size it is. I sold my 99 Ford Ranger 2 years ago and bought a 2006 F 150. We wanted a full size pickup truck.
I believe its an m6x1.0 metric bolt.
@@thewelderdude m6x1.0x20mm

If you need help identifying a bolt and only 1 is missing, it often helps to use your remaining bolt to find a replacement
@@ZuZaarr Yea....But you don't want to remove the remaining bolt. It's quite a bear to realign and reattach in the super tight space.

Bob Fletcher bro I had this same issue
Same here. Crazy how iI use the neutral option as well. Im going to try and fix this ASAP
Your situation is oddly specifically like mine.....................
too specific....
Bro exactly the same thing with me but it only started about a month ago. It wont even go into park, just goes into reverse

The shifter on my ranger is very loose and the tab was off a bit and when I’m parked on a hill it sometimes rolls. Could this be the issue?

My 95 Ranger has this exact same problem. For whatever reason, those two bolts won't stay tight.
WORKED FOR ME! THANK YOU!
Nice! I'm glad it worked for you.
Thanks! Ill have to give it a shot and hope that this is my problem solver :)
Good Luck! It should be an easy fix. I've had no problems with it since making this video two years ago.
I could be ur solution
Sorry that I didn't get back to you! We were gone on a trip. I also had the exact same problem about 1 1/2 years after this video.

On of my screw broke now what ? ..
awesome details
Thanks!!
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Thanks bro. 😎
Did not work on my 2011 ford ranger
Thank you
thanks bud / fixed me right up tyvm
Awesome! I'm glad that this video helped!
I thought my tranny was blown turns out one screw was missing and the remaining one was loose
easy for some maybe, my fat butt needed yoga lessons and a surgically attached third arm before I could get in there to do this right.
I push the seat back and lay on the floor. I'm a bigger guy, but it would make it a lot easier for a smaller person. You don't get a lot of work room in the Ford Rangers!
Update number 667!
They look stripped
Seems like the fastener broke on my ranger, anyone else?
show me a 1998 ford passenger van because you can't get under there without removing the bottom plates!!!! i watched and thought oh easy hell NOOOO.
It's easier to work on it removing the plate, but I still had good access for tightening the bolts. Always be careful around the wires. You don't want to force them to move. It's also a good idea to disconnect the battery. I never owned a van, but being a 1998 Ford it should be similar.
The easiest way to fix it is to buy a Chevy. 😂
Lol that could be true!
