I loved the end result in all three books! Though I think I like the metallic edges the most, they came out beautifully ☺ I wanted to try painting the edges myself but didn't have enough courage or knowledge of how to do it, so thank you so much for the tutorial!
Izabella I am glad you enjoyed it. I would not recommend trying this for the first time on your favorite books😅. I am actually working on a new video for painting and gilding book edges with an improved technique. I hope to post the video soon.
@@AnnaMarieReads Thank you, I will definitely try it first with the book that I don't mind "destroying" if things don't go as planned :D And I would love to watch it! Thank you for letting me know, I'll be on the lookout :)
Thanks for your very candid inclusion of mistakes. I’m looking at doing this for some books that I wish to keep and preserve and this was a very helpful video on its feasibility.
Hi there! I like your techniques...not too complicated like some other videos i watched. I'm gonna use your technique on spray painting the book edges. Thanks for the helpful video! I'll let you know how it comes out! Raul :)
Glad you enjoyed it. I got mine from Action (it’s a store here in the Netherlands). I don’t think that you can get the exact brand of transfer foil anywhere else. I am not too familiar with other brands. I will post a video where I compare the different types of foil, by the end of this month or in the first week of April at the latest. I usually just look for transfer foil that can be applied by rubbing it on a surface or can be applied with heat or pva glue. There is also toner reactive foil. Don’t buy that. It does not work for gilding book edges.
Fire is WAY better than the graceling books. If you decide to read, let me know what you think. I borrowed Graceling and Bitterblue but I bought Fire. Sooo good
Hi, I’m quite new to D.I.Y sprayed edges and always get some paint on some of the pages. This is despite the fact I use masking tape on all the book corners and place heavy weights on top of the book. Would you have any recommendations to avoid this?
Hi, I would definitely recommend a book press. It really helps with keeping the pages tightly together while you paint the edges. Also try dabbing on the paint instead of brushing it on. This also might prevent the paint leaking. And don’t use water with your acrylic paint. The paint should have a creamy consistency and definitely not be runny. I hope this helps!
Hi! I love your videos. I am about to try painting my books edge with poster colors. Do you think it can work? And also, with the glittering poster color (gold or silver), can it create the effect like gilded edge? I am new to this DIY so I’m not sure which material I should choose to start. Thanks a lot.
Hi, so I am not too sure about the poster paint. I have never tried that before. But I did try acrylic inc and it’s even better than acrylic paint. I did make a video on that. So you could check out the results in that video ( th-cam.com/video/RLmNagkn_yg/w-d-xo.html ) I would recommend trying poster paint on a book you don’t mind messing up. That’s what I usually do when I try out new techniques. For the gilded edge you could try the poster paint or any other shiny water based paint. But in my honest opinion it will never be as shiny as the foil. Hope this helped.
In this video I actually didn’t. But in my later attempts (I have posted a video of that) I actually did it completely differently. I used a glue/water mixture and I also applied a powder to keep the pages from sticking. In short I applied a thin layer of cornstarch (I also tried out baking soda and talcum powder with the same results). After I applied the powder I brushed on a thin layer of the glue mixture. I then pressed down the foil gently and started ironing it gently on a low temperature. The result was a more even coat of gild. I would recommend watching How to: Gilded Book Edges (super simple method) th-cam.com/video/oOhSF7_Dq4c/w-d-xo.html
I indeed used acrylic paint. But I must say I had better results with acrylic ink. In this video you can see the difference in acrylic ink versus acrylic paint th-cam.com/video/RLmNagkn_yg/w-d-xo.html in part 2 of this video I also worked out the issues of working with acrylic ink. Because acrylic ink is more watery it does have the tendency to leak into the book pages. th-cam.com/video/_TUOpWmvGUo/w-d-xo.html
Hello! It’s me again. I tried painting the book edge with a thin layer of poster color and it’s pretty, but the color keep smearing my finger when i touch the edge although it’s dry. Do u have any recommendations? I’m about to try coloring the edges with brushing pen or some kind of highlight pen. Have u ever tried this method?
Hi, so I have personally never tried a brush pen or a highlighter pen. In general I would try any medium that is waterproof or permanent. And also a medium that doesn’t leave a lot of residue. If the highlighter or brush pens are waterproof/ permanent then you could try.
So the brand I use in this video is only sold at the store Action. But I also use deco foil by iCraft. www.amazon.com/Deco-Foil-Transfer-Champagne-Packages/dp/B01MCW1WDB/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?adgrpid=67586323108&gclid=CjwKCAiA2fmdBhBpEiwA4CcHzVQep4E2yat9kB3T94OwzHvnGaV8800BiktiPYWtblRnJ2V2CTiRbRoCKpEQAvD_BwE&hvadid=294540551680&hvdev=m&hvlocphy=9067609&hvnetw=g&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5784072409744104555&hvtargid=kwd-443030811489&hydadcr=14706_9745876&keywords=ideco+foil&qid=1673433831&sr=8-2
Im having some issues, hopefully you can help me. I am using acrylic paints and it is chipping off. Any suggestions. I start with talc powder, then sand, then paint. I will wait 30min to an hour before separation.
With acrylic paint it will always chip off if you do not dilute the paint with water. However, the problem with the thinned paint is that it can look patchy. You can also leave the acrylic paint undiluted. But then you need to (before you detach the pages) sand down the paint so that it comes off in an even layer. The edge won't be as vibrant, but the layer won't chip anymore because you'll be left with a very thin layer of paint. If you apply it too thickly (which is almost always the case with acrylic paint) it will always chip as you move the pages. Also, I would recommend leaving the edge to dry a lot longer. I usually leave it overnight to dry. In addition to acrylic paint, I now also use acrylic ink. It is a slightly more difficult medium to work with, as it penetrates more easily between pages. But it gives a much better result. You don't have to sand it afterwards and the result is more even. I made a video about that. I put a link in the description. Hope this helps.
The Heidi Minc foil is unfortunately not suitable for book edge gilding. The Minc foil reacts to black toner from a laser printer. The black toner has plastics in the pigment that melt and cause the foil to adhere to a surface. Since you cannot run a book through a laser printer the Heidi Minc foils won’t work for edge gilding. There are two more types of foils out there that I know of that are suitable for gilding. One that has a thin layer of glue already applied to it. This glue is heat activated. So when you iron it onto the edge it sticks to the book. And the other type of foil is the one where you need to apply the glue yourself to make it stick to a surface. Hopes this helps.
Hi, not that I found. There is the professional option of a heated gilding roller. It’s the actual tool book binders use to gild book edges. But I personally never tried that one. I am not certain of the temperature. I always start on the lowest setting on the iron. And if that doesn’t work than I crank up the temperature a bit. For my iron the temperature between wool and silk setting worked best. I noticed that on the wool setting the foil has a tendency to melt and in the silk setting it has a hard time transferring to the edge. I usually let the temperature fluctuate between those two settings. So I start with silk setting (or even lower, depending on the iron I use). And then I go to the wool setting and if the edge is getting quite hot to the touch I let the iron cool off a bit on the silk setting before I iron the edge some more. It’s really not an exact science. Especially not with the iron. Also the temperature really depends on the type of foil your using. The thicker the foil the more the foil can handle. The downside is that it takes a bit longer to get the thicker foil to adhere. But if the foil is really flimsy and thin it might melt quicker but also adhere quicker to the edge. I hope my answer helped.
Yeah, it's holding up great. I would actually recommend watching my other video. I have updated my technique. With the new technique it's a lot easier to achieve good results. th-cam.com/video/oOhSF7_Dq4c/w-d-xo.html
It depends on where you live. You could try Amazon. Just search for hot stamping foil. It needs to be heat activated foil. I use different brands. For example: iCraft deco foil or Spellbinders hot foil.

Hi,
Instead of using iron to transfer the foil any other option ?
How much temperature you need to transfer the metalized foil.
