HOW TO PAINT BOOK EDGES UNHAULING BOOKS 1 | 2020 Testing a new book edge painting methode: th-cam.com/video/RLmNagkn_yg/w-d-xo.html Hi guys! I was looking over all the books I want to unhaul and I decided I needed to spruce them up a bit before I gave them away. This is going to be a many part series here on my channel. I will try out diffrent techniques to decorate books. In this video I will ...
Will this work on fabric like cotton?
Although i used the talc powder i may have been over generous with the glue because it wasnt laying down. I think next time i will do one side- split the pages, do another- split the pages- and hopefully itll take less time keeping the pages open.
Olá … qual é a cola q vc usa por favor me ajuda hahaha o talco é antes do processo para não grudar ? Mas quando poxa não sai o talco ?
Fab vidio. ❤😊
Thank you!! Love ya!!
Happy to help!
What type of ink do you use?
It’s acrylic ink.
Would this work on a colored page though without ruining the page?
Unfortunately not. With this method you essentially scrape off a thin layer of paper.
@@AnnaMarieReads darn, well thank you for responding though!
They all looked great!
I have tried this so many times, even bought a sander to sand the pages and make sure they are completely smooth, but I still cannot get it to look like yours does. Mine comes out matte, not shiny at all, or it has little tiny streaks in it. im at my wits end and I really want to figure this out
I’m still trying to get the right amount of cornstarch
What brand foil are you using? Also mine turned out matte when the temperature is too high.
I used vinyl frog and stardust works
Can you incorporate stencils? Like if I wanted to add a moon and star pattern to the holographic foil.
I never tried that before. It might be a bit too finicky to try to use stencils with foil. But you could maybe use foil for the background and use stencils to paint in a moon and star pattern on top of the foil. Might try it myself one day.
Why do you need glue if the foil suggest had hot activated glue?
It’s to initially attach the foil without airpockets to the edge. I have done it before without and waiting for the foils glue to heat up enough to stick took to long and while moving the iron around it tended to move the foil as well because the glue on the foil isn’t tacky from the get go. By using diluted glue it helps to work the foil without it moving all over the place
Will this remove an autograph written in sharpie from book pages?
No, unfortunately with sharpies the ink penetrates into the page. While a ball point pen only affects the top layer. Definitely would not recommend this method for that.
Would a hairdryer work?
Unfortunately not. You need both the heat as the pressure from the iron to get the glue to melt and stick to the edge
@@AnnaMarieReads Thanks!
I used the same supplies, the foil scratches so easily. Do you have a fix for that?
Can I ask if the foil is the same as HTV heat transfer vinyl? Or would that be too thick?
Transfer vinyl won’t work. It needs to be hot stamping foil. It’s incredibly thin and really something else than transfer vinyl.
My concern is repairing an already gilded book edges. It's all gold and I noticed the book may already have a scratch pre-buying as I didn't check, or I may have accidentally scratched it after buying it and heading home.
For that you would need to remove the previous gilding. By sanding it down enough. At that point it will be just like gilding any other book. But if you mess up with gilding I am guessing it’s going to look worse than a scratch. If you have never done this before it’s definitely a risk you are taking.
Does someone know how to get marker off the book page?
Dab a Q-tip in Rubbing Alcohol it will also remove the glue from price tags .
Hi, it will be perfect if you gilding playing cards or tarot cards
Qual tinta você usa? Amei seu trabalho ❤
Hi there! I like your techniques...not too complicated like some other videos i watched. I'm gonna use your technique on spray painting the book edges. Thanks for the helpful video! I'll let you know how it comes out! Raul :)
simple? lol. its complicated as hell
Echoing others I can’t believe this video isn’t more well-liked! Your method of watered down glue BEFORE thermal foil and LOWER heat is the only tip I’ve found that works. THANK YOU!!
This was really helpful, thank you.
THANKS !!! You have amazon link your the things you use in this vid?
will this work on thin bible pages?
Use nail polish remover and a cotton ball but put tissue underneath the page when u finish just iron the page
Never tried it. But I don’t think so. With this method you are in a way shaving of the top layer of paper. Considering that the bible pages are quite thin to begin with I wouldn’t recommend it. You might sand a hole right through it.
Does this work on paperback?
Unfortunately not.
What should I use to paint book edges
You should use watercolours as they don't make the pages stick together. I have painted some pictures this way. The trick is that you need to use pretty dry brushes and layer multiple thin layers of pigment to achieve desired coverage, otherwise the paint ruin your book.
Okay thank you
thank you for the gilding tips! i tried for the first time last night and it was super patchy, now i know six layers of foil was too much 😅
Does this work w bibles?
You can use this technique on any book
Wow thank you so much
Thanks so much! My little girl wrote in a glossy paper book on sketching.
This is incredibly helpful! Thank you!!
Have you ever gilded a bible with tabs cut in? How would you recommend doing it. I am really having trouble with glue being really sticky, but foil is not all sticking.
I have never tried to gild a bible with tabs cut in. But I would recommend leaving the tabs ungilded. So making sure there is no glue where the tabs cuts are made. And just apply the foil on to the straight edge. I think that would give the cleanest look. When it comes to glue being to sticky. It is not supposed to be. I water my glue down until it has the consistency of milk and doesn’t feel sticky at all. After applying I make sure the glue is almost dry and is slightly sticky. And that’s when I apply the foil. By starting with applying gentle pressure with the iron intro to make sure the foil doesn’t shift. You always need to start out with gentle pressure and increase it over time. When you can see the that the foil seems to have stuck to the edge well. As in there are no air pockets underneath the foil. That’s when you should increase the pressure. It takes a lot of patience. Also I let the foil cool off completely before very slowly and carefully removing it. Hope this helps.
This is a brilliant video with great explanations and troubleshooting tips. Thank you!
I bet a quilter’s mini iron would be really helpful for this.
Oh, just saw you have one! 😂
Can I use that same process if the book has already silver edges but I want to change it for gold or do I have to take it off first? Thanks.
I wouldn’t recommend that. It will have spots where it will shine through. It also won’t stick as well as it would on clean edges.
Hello, so with the foil, you still used the adhesive? Also, what setting/temperature do you have the iron you're using at?
Is it easy with gold leaf? I only have leaf.
I never tried it with gold leaf, so can’t really say.
My foil keeps getting wrinkly when i press it 😭 i dont know what to do
The temperature you are using on your iron is probably too high. Try lower temperatures first. It takes longer, but it should prevent wrinkling of the foil. Good luck!
Hola, por favor podrías decirme cómo haces para que el foil se adhiera a los cantos, le hechas algo por favor explícame porque me encantaría aprender. Gracias
I absolutely loved all of them however I think the one you did off camera was the prettiest;)
That's NOT gilding!
Nice
Can you use a hair dryer instead of an iron?
No unfortunately not. A hairdryer doesn’t give of enough heat and it’s also a combination of heat and pressure that makes the gilding stick to the book
Do you know how to remove stmaps from pages on books - ink stamps. My coussin went overbaord with kids stamps :((
I never tried to remove a stamp. If it’s visible on the other side of the page I think that would be impossible to remove. If it’s not set too deeply into the paper you could try that method I used to remove pen marks.
How do you sand the top edge? Also have you tried books with a curved edge?
A cut the piece of sandpaper to size. So it fits in between the book boards and just sand it in one direction (away from the spine). And I did try books with curved edges. It’s a little bit more finicky. But with a small enough iron it definitely is possible
I not have sand paper
nice
Thank you from Saudi Arabia 🇸🇦
Hi thank you for making this video! I have a book which originally had gilded edges but there were scratches and an Etsy seller attempted to fix it with sprayed paint (which turned out to make the book worse than before). I am trying to re gild the edges myself and am wondering whether I can use any gold heated foil to fix the edges
You can use hot foil to fix the edges. But before you do any of that you first need to remove all the paint and previous gilding. It’s a pain to do, but well worth it in the end.
@@AnnaMarieReads do you think it’s possible to sand the spray paint away and leave the original gilded edges?
Unfortunately, I don’t think so.
You don't need to heat gold.
