Hi mike. I'm moving to wales where they have a planning policy for what i am doing, its called policy 52, wales has realised that people are leaving because the can't find work and they are trying to get people back on the land. i don't want to opt out of society, far from it. i want to try and show people that you can get back on to land, do things yourself and add to the local economy. build not only relationships with nature but with local people to. if i hurt myself in this process believe me i will be down the hospital. i dont want us to all go it alone and beat the system, i want us to all realise that the system is not currently serving our best interests. i don't have all the answers how I'm going to do it. but i want to give back to society in manny ways so that i don't end up a preaching, anti system hippy with a laptop and iPhone. i just want to show people that there are other ways other than the 9-5 grind, single skilled culture. i don't want to beat a system, people create systems and people can change systems. i won't be doing anything illegal, I'm just doing my best as a young man to make a change that i believe will be positive for me and the environment. the planning laws that are there to protect the land don't do a great job. i see deforistation and over grazing, planning policy is there to stop bad things happening, but in that process it stops good things happening to. I'm hoping to be good thing for this land.
i don't think i can live without money I'm to deep in the system, i would like to earn money from my land by selling my woodwork or produce and i will being paying tax on anything that i should be.
i hope this clears things up a little bit. i apriciate the comments.
i will also look at getting that book thanks for the advice

DIY Harbor Thanks for the reply. I understand better now what you mean and I agree with your approach. For me what you say is common sense and at the same time quite brave. I've met people over the years who hated their job or the 9-5 routine and aspired to doing something else but readily admitted that they were not 'brave' enough to do something about it. They hated the job but the job was a safe place to be.I knew Wales had a different approach to people living on the land if they were working it, but never heard of policy 52, will look that one up! You've said ' I just want to show people that there are other ways' - this channel would be a great way to do just that so I hope you'll continue to document your progress. ATB.

My farther being a miner built a hard road a mile long up to the cottage . he was all so a man of meny talents in life & as i grow up our family lived a life of idyllic & separate life stile from the rest of our. Village & that isolation meant we had to a lot of our life. become self reliant. we grew our own food. much as you do . we produced our own power. in a different way but the end goal was for The 4 Elements of sustainability. hating & light , food & shelter, the (4 ) basic element in life.
yes we used wind mils back then but not as sophisticated as we see today that Teck was not about well it was but in it basic form but pyrolysis was & we product our own gas & that gas was used to light out home YES you got it right. { Light our home} back then we cooked on a rang & powered our home gas for light, & products that in a wood gas generator & cleaned it with a bubbler & condense it in an old steel lined deep freeze which run of the gas we product. all you have Spoken of I get but we the Masses can't all live our lives in the way we once did, There is not sufficient land to sustain us that way. we in our own way were very lucky people to Esperance the lives' we did & in your case still do. Had i not had an opatunity to but my cauncil house i would be living in a van today . so i get it. but we do not "Burden the world in such a way" others do i get that to . i live quit modestly on my pension with my loving wife . today we her of the shortages of power & the predicted cot's it will men for us using. that rely on it . But you & i know if we can't afford it we find a solution to it we can afford & i find your new micro hydro power Soler & wind production a exsepterbal answer for some & in meny ways can proves at lest one or two of the for liement of sustainability.
but we must never forget the one singular element that enables it all to work. Our self we being the tool to achieve our own salvation in life with out our effort's, if we do nothing & i fear we have all go lazy . Or Shal i say Prevented from achieving our potential in life . Les Thompson A respectful & early pioneer of life of grid way WE never get the medals son Just the work Well done Keep it up . i have ben traying to fined you Early flux wind mills build but can't find it i have seen what you have product in the rebuild frim it retirement , From under the bench, I must say what a lost opatunity for sail's, will you be posting you new build in detail i & others would love to see it , Thank you Les .

Very happy to have stumbled on this video. You are an inspiration man, and what you say here is so true. We are taught that it is dangerous to try and do things for ourselves, taught to be scared of the dirt where our food grows, taught to be scared of building anything, working on things we should leave to 'professionals'. We have our intelligence and potential insulted every step of the way in life by people who are already jaded and cynical. The same people who have never explored their own potential and who are disturbed to see anyone young and enthusiastic. As with everything it is not always black and white, because there is also a lot to learn from people who have spent their life doing one skill, and many trades and crafts are highly complex the more you learn... but we can do far more than most people believe, if we put our mind to it. TH-cam holds an insane wealth of experience and knowledge on almost anything you could attempt to build, grow, design, etc. Plus the margins for error are far greater than we are taught. When we are children we fall and hurt ourselves frequently in the process of learning, and then as adults we become afraid. So it takes bravery to say and do what you have done. It's not about undermining or attacking peoples choices, just about saying, "Enough! This is not for me."

I am 51 now and I'm about to start what you started 6 years ago. it's never too late.
the world is literally collapsing as we speak. China is now out of the energy sources. they operate their factories 2 days a week, because their energy is insufficient.
I don't want to be a bad prophet, but that can only bring war and Chinese occupation, because China is not going to sit on the corner and cry over their finished energy sources.
China will take that energy from nearby countries at first, by force or whatever means necessary. and then they will move further.
so again, cheers to you Kris for the inspiration and for the proof of concept using your own example.

This is fascinating, the pallet idea particularly. We’re setting up a forest garden and just got some ducks, but we’re going slow with it. Our land is a wildlife haven, but it’s been ruined with fences and bricks buried all over it, which were slowly fixing. We want to teach our son to be self-sufficient so he is never reliant on a system that is so risky. Whatever he chooses to do when he’s older, he’ll always have the skills to rely on. Lovely to hear you speaking about it! We’re slow at learning it, having started with no experience, but the wealth of information out there is amazing.

More and more generations wanted that fancy life in the big cities. We left the city 40 years ago to save an old farm house that was in decay. We built a lovely home doing all the work just us and our kid. We had a small horse farm and loved the life. To my Big point we had to savage clean saw dust, or pay for it!!! I see your pile of saw dust and can't understand why people don't save it since it is used for horses. But their are many other uses you will discover. Just been binge watching much of your work, during the First Great Coronavirus Lockdown. Then I found this. Congratulations Kris. You really seem to have achieved so much of what you hoped. I can imagine that 5 years ago, so many folk might have dismissed you as a naive dreamer. Not now. You have proved it can be done. Thank you for sharing your journey, honestly, with all its ups and downs. Many will also appreciate the thought you give to all your actions and the potential hypocrasies that critics imagine. I suspect many will envy what you have, perhaps because it shows how little they have achieved in their allotted time on this earth. Please keep doing what you do. You can sleep soundly. All the best to you and yours. Stay safe.

Just finished a 12 hour shift and watched this video. I've never heard a viewpoint so depressing and inspiring at the same time. So many points resonated with me. Homes were a lot cheaper for our parents, back when there were half as many people living on Earth, and still they owe debt their entire lives. I may end up building my own house out of financial necessity if nothing else.

Wondering if this video was your first. I found your channel over a year ago when I was forced to start working from home because of Covid. I have found several off grid channels. Love the idea of living off the land as you have proven can be done. I told my wife that if we ever won the lottery I would buy a large piece of land in the farm town we live in and invite others to buy sections of the large plot of land I would purchase. We would all work together building solar , wind and even hydro to supply electricity to all those who would chose to buy a section of land to build their own home and raise their own farm animals and growing their own food. This planet would be so much better off if we had off grid communities that lived like this.

We are dealing with a lot of the same economical problems here in the USA and a lot of us are doing the same thing as you "getting back to our roots" living off the land and living more natural using permaculture. I wish you the best of luck God speed Brother.

So eloquently put Kris. It's nice to hear some honesty about the desire to be debt free. I think the fact that living naturally does offer a way to detatch from corporate life and also detatch oneself from being tied to a property and paying it off for your whole life just makes utter sense to me. I appreciate the point you made about doing the same job, using the same skill your whole live is a really crappy prospect. I could not agree more. The greener I can make my life is also of great importance to me. Everytime I throw something in the bin, I get a little pang of shame because I consider it and ask myself, did I need to throw that away? The world is such a wasteful place and your way of life really does combat this head on. In short this really struck a chord with me. Please keep up this excellent content. Much respect

Hi Kris. I’ve just started watching you and your achievements over the last few weeks, and I’m totally bold over by what you’ve achieved for yourself over the last six years or so.
Listening to what you’ve said on this vid makes me wish I was as clued in as you are when I was around your age. You are a 100% right in what you say.
Im 57 now and my partner and I are just about to buy our own woodland, and I plan to build a straw bale house there and we aim to live off grid. Being also vegans, we also intend to do permaculture and encourage wildlife to thrive.
I’ve been a cabinet/furniture maker all my life, and have a lot of skills in the building trade. But what you’ve accomplished and taught yourself to do is amazing. Keep up the great work, and I look forward so seeing how your world keeps developing. Ian

You description of a broken system and knowledge attributed to all of it shows why you chose the Off-Grid lifestyle and I totally understand.

Guffbag z kind words, i will be slogging in in a tent for a few months until a build my yurt type shelter. but in a few years I'm hoping to have set up some comforts and the land is 4 miles from the cleanest most peaceful coastline i have ever seen. and there are lots of pubs and i did not meet a single person that was not friendly, in fact i went in to the toilet in the pub and on the wall was a poster of the local police force. 4 police with there pictures and phone numbers and id numbers. in london police hide there identity. the land needs a lot of work but the people and the area is just fantastic.

    Hey Kris,
just great to take a step back to the very beginning of your "new life off the grid" project. Great to realize your background, your motivation. The more I follow your path on this channel, the more I get a bit jealous of Wales' regulations. Like most "civilized" countries, in Germany this is and will be impossible, regardless of the area. Even living in a tiny house (which could be another approach of living off-grid) is mostly restricted, sigh.
At the time I'm writing this, you just released the first episode about the beginning of your upper workshop, June 2021.
    Man, what you've achieved eversince!
Thank you so much for sharing this lifetime experience with us!
Even for those, who got stuck within the established system, your example is so much inspiration.
If everybody would pick up the spirit of your message, and just realizes those parts possible, then our planet (its ecosphere) and our own health (mind the current pandemic!) would benefit largely.
Again, thanks and stay healthy (mind your shoulder...), both of you! 👍
