  • In today's video, I demonstrate how to do the popular Reverse Emboss Blackout Technique using 3D embossing folders and Catherine Pooler Ink Pads. You'll see how easy this technique is for anyone to accomplish! Other products used are: Momento Tuxedo Black ink, Sizzex Big Shot, AlteNew Embossing folders, Blending Brushes and a silicon craft mat.

    I use a Brother label maker to print out the Big Shot sandwich recipe for each of my embossing folders and I put the label directly on the folder so I can quickly create the correct pressure. For instance, BLUE PLATE, or 1 STANDARD PLATE & 1 SHIM. I stick it right on the folder for the next time. Great time saver!

      Hi Tricia - that's a brilliant idea to use your label maker to label your embossing folders! Guess what is now on my list to do! That's such a better idea than the sheet of notepaper I have been writing the sandwiches on. Thank you for sharing that excellent idea! I hope others here, see your comment so they can also take advantage of this great idea! Thank you for watching my video and leaving such a great suggestion!

    This is very creative and your cards came out quite lovely. If I may suggest some tips that might be helpful: 1. Always mist your paper with water before embossing, then heat dry. 2. use non-tacky tape on your fingertips when holding your panel down. No inky-fingers or fingerprint smuggles on your work.

      No, i have never inked my embossed papers. It looks very easy though. I usually "crank" out a few at a time, because i have a big shot with the handle. It's sort of a pain to spend 15 min trying to get just the right pressure!!! I know you get that!!!😅@CampHappyMail

    I appreciate the "mistakes" and the process you go through to fix them. In reality we only think it's a mistake, the card receiver just looks at the card as a wow.

    • @CampHappyMail
      @CampHappyMail  หลายเดือนก่อน

      You are absolutely right! So often I get caught up in the mistakes I make during the process and I have to keep reminding myself that the receiver will never perceive anything on the card as a mistake. I have never had anyone return a handmade card because they thought I made a mistake. The part 2 of this video shows another way that I overcame making the same mistake (with the ink blended panel that was then run through the embossing folder afterwards). It turned out so unique and was the main reason I decided to keep the footage and do a Part 2 before making some of the panels into cards. I hope you'll come back to see part 2 for more ideas! I took photos and printed pages and added notes and placed in a tabbed notebook. Since I’m blessed to have several cut machines now. Manufactures could had made universal thickness for all machines. Hi! Thank you for stopping by! These platforms do drive me a little bonkers with none of the embossing folders being the same thickness! I just picked up a set of individual platforms made by Spellbinders, that I have heard others have used with their Big Shot. Once I receive them and have had a chance to figure them out, I will do a full review incase others, like yourself, might be interested! Oh and Julia is amazing isn't she? I love her style and how she comes up with such unique ways to use her scraps! She is a queen at using her scraps to make lovely cards! And thank you for your tip on the color wheel. By day I am a professional artist and love, love, love the color wheel! It's a wonderful tool for picking colors for projects. I was going to cut the part about adding the purple to the brown but decided to leave it in as a "teaching moment" for those that may not have known that purple and green make brown. You are a smart cookie and obviously recognized it immediately, which is super cool! I have great admiration for those that know and understand the color wheel because it can get quite complex sometimes! Thank you again for stopping by to watch my video! I appreciate it!

    I also have a Big Shot. With my Altenew 3D Folders, I am able to use my Extended Platform, totally closed (Tab 2), a thin, glossy advertising mailer, my 3D Embossing Folder (with 110 lb. cardstock inside), and one cutting plate on top. That tends to always work for me with the Altenew folders.

    Hi Maureen, this was a fantastic video. You are very brave trying out new techniques for the first time on these videos... well done you! 👏
    I loved your honesty by keeping all your mistakes in as let's face it we all try something that doesn't work... although we can throw our mistakes away without anyone knowing...LOL!!! 🤣I loved how you worked through them and showing us how you find solutions.
    While both de-bossed panels were beautiful, I really liked the second one with the blue background. There was just enough pink on the flowers, and green foliage that remained which would make a beautiful card. I wonder how this technique would go swiping the panel with distress oxides??? Sorry, that is just a thought that came to my head. 🙃
    Maureen, I would love to see your craft space in a video when you are ready, but in the meantime thank you for sharing your ideas and crafting talents with us.
    God's blessings, Gloria 💖

      Hi Gloria! Thank you for coming by to watch this new video!! You are so sweet! Honestly, trying the techniques for the first time on video is so much fun for me because it forces me to figure out on the spot how to fix something if I mess it up! I love the challenge! And I have to agree with you on the blue panel now that I have made it into an actual card, it has definitely become a favorite! You brought up an interesting idea - about the distress oxides. I added that to my list to try. I am curious as to how regular ink will interact with the distress oxides but I may try it with Distress Inks and Distress Oxides since I am pretty sure those might work together better. Definitely some things I will be experimenting with! Do you use Distress Oxides?
      Thank you for being interested in seeing my tiny craftspace! I am working on a few videos about it (the setup, organization and overall working in a tiny space in an equally tiny apartment!).
      Thank you again for coming to watch another one of my videos! It's so nice of you to come by and leave me such sweet comments!

      @@CampHappyMail Hey there Maureen, I perhaps don't use my distress oxides enough in my craft studio considering that I have their entire collection of colours PLUS their re-inkers!!! YAY... yes, I do have all the D Oxide re-inkers... happy days!!!
      If I could type this next bit in really tiny print, I would so that no one can quite read what I am about to say... I don't use the distress oxides inks for what they were designed to do being for backgrounds, and then to activate with splashes of water.
      Instead, I often use the oxides for blending, stamp then emboss, I also do a stencil watercolour technique with the oxides which is totally fun to do and one of my favourites.
      Yes, I wonder how using distress oxides with other brands of ink would go..., maybe I might go and play around to see what happens after all that is how new things in our craft happen. I might have to get out my embossing folders and try some of these techniques with distress oxides as well.
      Happy crafting and creating! 💖

      @@gloriaonesimus6244 I feel like we could have wonderful crafty conversations! You are so lucky to have the full set of distress oxides and the re-inkers! Oh the techniques that can be done with those tools! Your comment about the small print made me laugh! Shhh don't tell but Like you, I rarely use my distress oxides for what they were intended (just simple backgrounds with water splatters). Last weekend I sat on my balcony and ink blended through stencils and then sprayed the stencils that had residual ink on them and pressed paper onto those to make reverse stencil imprints. THey almost look like they were watercolored! I am currently turning those into thank you cards! I am curious about how other inks will interact with the distress oxides, since we know they react to water, so water based ink pads could be interesting. I will be trying this when I am back in GA where my craft stuff is. I think there should be a number of videos coming up using distress oxides in unconventional ways.... Hmmmm..... :)

    I love the blue with the pink highlights. The black is dramatic but is always used. The blue is new, so it pops more. My eye is drawn more to the blue.

      Hi Andrea - you are so right! The black is so overdone so it was fun to try it in a different color! I am planning to try this with some other background colors to see how they turn out. I've not decided if I will video those attempts because I don't know if that would be too much airplay on the same kind of technique. Thank you for stopping by to watch my video and cast your vote in favor of the blue one!

    Maybe if you tried using a brayer to add the black or navy ink, the ink wouldn’t sink into the coloured areas . Just discovered your channel. 😀

      Hi Elizabeth! Ohhhh using a brayer - now that sounds like an interesting experiment waiting to happen (adding it to my list!). I bet that would work in place of the spongy/juicy ink pads. I think I will definitely be revisiting this technique to try the brayer! Thank you for suggesting that and also for coming by to watch my video! @@CampHappyMail i think that if you use a brayer you will disturb the depth of the debossing, but i suppose you could run it thru your big shot again, but more importantly, i think you may end up with brayer lines...PERSONALLY i love this technique as you demonstrated and i DO prefer your navy, i don't call this a happy accident, tho i do like that term, i call it a 'creative license to step out of the box'. Thanks for your video tutorial and now i will use the spongier (?) pads when i do this technique. cheers

      Oh Sandra, you and me both!! I worry all the time about breaking this machine! Mine is no longer under warranty and I would hate to have to replace it at this point because it is not that old. I also like to use a variety of shims but your idea of a mac and cheese box is a good one! I may give that a try instead of multiple sheets of paper! I have started to make a cheat sheet for my embossing folders so I don't have to spend so much time figuring out sandwiches. I wish companies made them more uniform! Could you somehow put a waxy layer over the flowers before you put the black? I'm thinking back when I was a kid and used crayon on paper so when I painted it the paint wouldn't stick to the crayon part. I'm just beginning card making. It's so fun!... And pricey!

    • @CampHappyMail
      @CampHappyMail  17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Mydaisydog! I love your name! I had a "Daisy dog" too (sadly, she passed in April 2023)... best girl ever.... Anyway - your comment has me thinking... I wonder if masking fluid, like you use for watercoloring, would work to keep the black off of the areas that you don't want it? I see some experimenting in my future! I may see if I can find a clear wax crayon too - your idea seems like it would work! I agree with you that cardmaking can be pricey. I am working on some videos "using what you have" and "using alternate things" if you don't have something specific. I love coming up with ways to do something without having to purchase something new. Thank you for stopping by to watch my video and leave me a great comment that now has my wheels turning!
