    Just checked out Wikitree. Not many ancestors on there and ones that were had many errors or little info (not even any standard info easily found on said ancestors wikipedia page). However, I did see there is a branch I had no information on, so I have something to investigate! I will have to add wikitree to my project list. I fixed the General's profile, info & added a photo, we'll see if anyone comments on the changes I made.

      This was one of our many attempts to have show and tell with interviews. We'll keep trying new things. We likely won't turn off the cameras because you can get that on any other genealogy channel. So, we'll keep working on solutions to magnify the screen. Thanks for your patience.

    Problem with WikiTrees and Family search etc. is that someone else can make changes. I have found that they are making changes to parts of family and they are wrong.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't see that as a problem but rather an opportunity. On WikiTree you have more control over the changes if you are a profile manager. On FamilySearch, you just have to work with the other researcher and share your sources. Since so many errors keep propagating from people copying bad trees, I think the collaboration will eventually help us arrive at correct trees sooner if we're patient.

    • @caroldunk.3481
      @caroldunk.3481 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup, I submitted a partial tree on Family Search and people got stupid deleting and making changes. One woman took my Great Grandmother off and married My Great Grandfather to his daughter. I changed it and she changed it back. It is sickening.

    Looks like it is time consuming to sit and individually add each source from places you may have them, Would be nice if you could bring over all your sources from a particular site, or program on your computer, in one fell swoop. For some ancestors it may be easy because they only have 2 or 3 sources but I have some with at least 10. I am not sure I want to join if I have to devote that much time to each and every person that I may have in a GEDCOM file to make sure all their sources are in place.
    Am I missing something or is it easier than moving them one at a time?

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are not missing something. There is a way to upload a Gedcom file so long as it's smaller than 5000 persons, but then you create duplicates and that becomes a problem. www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:GEDCOM

      It happens on every platform. However, in collaborative environments that focus on source citations, things do tend to work themselves out. It's also been my experience that serious researchers use Wiki, casual researchers tend to use other platforms. Have you tried WIkiTree?

    • @caroldunk.3481
      @caroldunk.3481 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It is the same way on Family Search. Don't post a tree there either. On Family Search people can take your info and delete and add what they feel like it.

    • @PaulBech1957
      @PaulBech1957 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Paul from the WIkiTree team here. The good thing about WikiTree is that the power is in your hands to fix any errors to make WikiTree a great resource for the genealogy community. Actually there is a large number of WIkiTreers who have taken it on themselves to add sources to fix and validate such profiles. Unlike many other sites all the source information is on the main page of the profile in plain view. You are actually placing your information out there for peer review.
      One of the benefits of a shared tree is that people come along who have information that you may never find by yourself, like a cousin with some family photos.

  • @jeffreylehrer
    @jeffreylehrer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    FamilySearch is also good in the merged, one big tree category and while there are some issues with the FamilySearch tree there are also some issues with the sharing in Wikitree. Have you checked out WeRelate? This is a good shared option however it only includes deceased individuals. I previously wrote an article about the combined use of WeRelate and Wikitree. www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Combined_use_of_WeRelate_and_Wikitree

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics

      I don't hide the fact that I haven't used collaborative trees other than FamilySearch much because they lack the ability to search records and link them to the tree. Therefore, I haven't checked out WeRelate as my time is finite at this stage in my life

    I use WIkiTree to "hard-source" my line. Ancestry/Geni, et al. I see as "soft-source" sites.
    I've encountered far too many "Genealogy Tourists" at the soft-source sites. I only use them as notepads for potential leads to hard-source, i.e. physical documentation I can house in WikiTree. Collaboration in WikiTree is a superb feature just not present elsewhere.
    As always, use the tool you like best. I use them all, but WikiTree is the only site I consider as near-authoritative.

    Wikitree's BIG failure is that the family tree is NEVER "your's" because anyone can attach their incorrect stuff and contaminate "your" tree.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Yes and No. Yes, anyone can add incorrect information to WikiTree but everyone who has changed that tree (and the tree manager) is notified of the changes. The incorrect information doesn't have to remain permanent. That's the purpose of collaboration.
      Meanwhile, on Ancestry, false information continues to be propagated as people are not forced to collaborate. ThruLines is not helping to flesh out the falsehoods. However, if folks fight about inaccurate information, it is nice to have our trees separate.
      In short, there are advantages and disadvantages to collaborate and personal trees.

      @@FamilyHistoryFanatics family is a socially constructed concept created out of Feudal law.
      The word family derives from the word Famulas which means to serve, be a servant or serf. The
      concept is based on human farming, producing livestock for the purpose of keeping westernized
      society alive. It is an exclusively westernized idea that did not exist with non whites prior to being
      rudely introduced to your society. Marriage is based solely on business which requires a license.
      Ultimately the family belongs to the government which is why there is a family court. Notice how
      the government via through religion sets the rules as to how a marriage works. The government
      can also take the children you produced from your home because it believes that the kids are its property. The government tells you how to raise the children you produce and forces you to enroll
      them into its school system. The family is nothing more than a servant to the christian religion
      and westernized so called white governments. Its a concept that needs to be done away with
      for good.

    • @francescathomas3502
      @francescathomas3502 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      NO it is NOT an automatic upload. You will have to go through your gedcom and choose which names to upload and which are duplicates. The point is to PREVENT any duplicate profiles, because every person on the global tree is supposed to have just ONE profile. I suggest you either start with a very small gedcom, or you create and add profiles manually.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's entirely possible. It's not necessarily a database to find records but rather to build your tree with other serious genealogists.

  • @richardoneal1055
    @richardoneal1055 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    No it isn't free. There some serious research that has been posted online for a number of genealogies, but not likely posted by those that put in thousands of hours of time and tens of thousands of dollars in travel to obtain their data and all it takes is one person (relative) to ask to see it and the next thing you know they're passing it around to others and posting it online on sites like this who make money advertising because of all information they've obtained at no cost to them.
    Here's the facts. A lot of people do genealogy for three months, six months, or less. They pay for subscriptions and look online and copy others research. These people don't collaborate because they don't know anything. Very, very few people put in real research time and money and continue researching for decades and a lot of people free load off their work including websites like this.

    • @FamilyHistoryFanatics
      @FamilyHistoryFanatics  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I appreciate the cost behind the people who add their research to Wiki Tree, it would be incorrect to say that the website is not free. Since they do not charge users when they sign up for an account, that's the meaning of the word I have to go with.
      As for your point about taking the research from people who have invested in the hobby, I can emphasize your sentiments. I do not wish to discuss the full scope of the topic in a quick comment. There is much to discuss here.
