I enjoy watching Zee review games. He paints a full picture of what a game is and what it is not and articulates the feelings that a game might evoke. At the end of a review I know where he stands, and that's a solid play!
Actually, that's exactly what I did XD And it totally works. If you already own Captain Sonar, you DEFINITELY don't need to buy this one. Just apply these rules to Captain Sonar and have a good time :) The only reason that I can see to get Sonar would be if: 1. you don't already own Captain Sonar, and 2. you don't see yourself ever having 6-8 people to play with and you're also maybe not really interested in the real-time aspect too much (which honestly defeats the purpose of the game, I feel, but to each their own). I completely agree. It gives a very similar feel, but much easier to play and teach. I played with a 7 year old and he not only understood it, but ended up beating me! (I gave myself a minor handicap of moving around islands to make it more obvious where I was, but other than that, played for real)
I have one major qualm. When one player uses silence, the other can immediately use sonar and all but cancel silence's effectiveness. Once one player gets ahead in the game strategically, its almost impossible to catch up.
Zee, please, please do a showcase of your small and medium games. I too, am a collector of small games and am always looking for hidden gems. Hook a brother up.
@@NATOnova due to the limited movements, i noticed that once ure hit, its very hard to recover. Had to create a house rule: once hit youre allowed to surface anywhere within 4 spaces.
Zee: Love the original game, deciding whether to get this instead as it's easier to bust out. How would you compare Sonar to Specter Ops? No sure why, after seeing this video, I felt like Sonar and Specter Ops have similar vibes.
I would not put Sonar and Specter Ops in the same category. SO is tense and thinky. Sonar I felt more like a good advanced battleship that every family should own.
I am really surprised by the positive review. In my opinion the mechanics are simply broken. Just like Tic-Tac-Toe you are going to end with a stalemate unless somebody makes a mistake. Basically at the mid point of the game both players have their weapons charged and know exactly where the other ship is and it's only the sector lines that keep them save. The first one to cross them dies.
I personally don't like this one very much. With two players that know what they are doing you just go back and forward, using silence to put the opponent off but really onlyhides you at one of 2 spaces at best after a sonar. So eventually someone needs to guess one of the 2 spots and hope they get it right. So for me it seemed like it boiled down to who can guess correctly twice first.

As someone who doesn't have an 8 player gaming party, this is exactly what I needed to jump into this series.

I like the ideas of this game, but it really doesn't need to have such a huge box for such a simple idea and so few components.
How can you tell your oponen isn't lying about their position or if they were hit by a torpedo?
