This is one of the best 2-player trick-taking games! Such a great back and forth, with the building tension between the players. I've had games where it came down to the wire on the last trick and I've had games where Mr. Hyde took every trick in the first round and ended the game immediately haha!! I love how this game can have both those moments! Just amazing.
Hi Zee! Great review as usual. I know you are huge on Bruno Cathala's designs, but I didn't realize how much both your minds were in sync: he just released a video on his own TH-cam channel to highlight the subtilties of this clever little trick-taking game he loves!
Re video segment 10.45 to 11.25- after a 6-4 split and then 5-5, Hyde needs to win by 8 in the 3rd round as mentioned - but that requires 9-1 (or 10-0), not the 7-3 as stated.
This is a really great review. When I first learned about this game, I thought it could be a game that is as good and gives me the same enjoyment as Hanamikoji. Then, during the video, I was taken aback by the (in hindsight obvious) criticism of the possibility of a clear victor being established during the 2nd round already. However, you provided the solution to that problem as well (playing both sides and having the winner be decided by the final total score comparison). I think I'll get this one for the next longer train ride or as a present to a couple of friends :)
What happens if I lead a potion and call Greed and the other player doesn't have any Greed and plays another card that isn't a potion? Does the lead potion win? Does it only compare to the number on the card? Does it depend on the the current power of each suit? Also this is currently in Beta on Boardgamearena.com so you can try it out there!
I finally received the German version today and came here to check the review. I found the cards are not that high quality as stated. They have a linen finish, but they are a very flimsy cardstock and some of them already had some dents. I sleeved them, but it's a shame they were not made for heavy duty shuffling.
At the end of the video you say that Hyde would need to have a 4 trick difference by starting at position 2... If I got the rules correctly Shouldn't it be 8?
Hey Ray, I'd say this definitely stands out compared to Duet. If you have the original Fox in the Forest, this is definitely more similar, but the card play is what really stands out. The balancing mechanism supported by the asymmetrical powers is what makes this game amazing. Duet is more of a cooperative, tug of war that is about working well with your partner.
If Mr. Hide plays (red card 4) but Dr Jekyll doesn't have anymore red card, so he plays (pink card 7), who wins the trick? (but in this situation, only the red token has been placed on the strength board, and Mr. Jekyll also have a potion card. Does Mr Jekyll have to play the potion card? if not who wins the trick of red card 4 vs pink card 7?
As soon as you described the potion use, I was won over. Thanks again Zee, for all you do, and how you do it. Question? AT 6:15, when player 2 plays the green card, does the suit get fixed / does the green token get placed back on the board?
I played this tonight and absolutely HATED it. I’m not a huge fan of trick taking games to start with but this game just did not do it for me… Maybe there’s something I didn’t get but I couldn’t wait for it to be over!
according to bgg, they are still working on an english release (or at least a U.S. distributor) but the french version should be available (now? soon? from a place called black rock games
I also wanted to just put out there that I think zee is one of the best reviewers there is ; I’m always happy when I see that the review is by him.

Looks amazing: 2 player, asymetric trick taking game, with a victorian literature theme. Instant buy.

I was thinking the same thing.
8 would be 8 wins to 2 wins. 8 - 2 = 6 so a difference of 6.
7 wins to 3wins. 7 - 3 = 4 so a difference of 4.
@@whataboutki he says if the difference is two the token moves two spaces
So one token movement for one trick of difference

If you find Hyde fails too often, give him an extra card in hand each round.
