The split screen presentation at 2:36 is a fantastic visual break in the explanation.
“Stand up and listen”?! Well that’s my second favorite game review channel!
Seems contradictory to state better than Captain Sonar right after stating it is expensive, hard to teach and really only 4 players. Captain Sonar plays fine 6 to 8, but is quite easy to teach being quite intuitive and definitely cheaper.
So good as it is, can't see it replacing that.
Also it’s not real time, so the comparison seems strained. Real time is what makes CS so much fun. It’s chaos.

I get that movie mixed up with Hudsucker Proxy.
Captain Sonar seems to have many advantages over this:
1)Much Faster Game
2)1/2 the Price
3)Much wider player Counts 4-8 vs 2 or 4)More play modes-Real Time/Turn Based
5)Much easier/faster to teach
6)Arguably broader appeal of theme
7)More role diversity
I'm not sure player count is an advantage; Captain Sonar is more like a party game which shines with 8 players. I find it harder to get that many people to play a game. Even more so a real time game, which some people find stressful, and that game makes you scream, which means even more stress.
I think Sabotage would be easier to bring to the table because you need less people and can plan your turns calmly.
I prefer Space Cadets: Dice Duel over Captain Sonar, by the way. I know they're different, but still similar. You need less people (6) but can play up to 10 with the expansion, there's less screaming because you can see what everyone is doing... It just doesn't look as cool =P.
@@All_Ice117 I played Captain Sonar at a convention using just the Turn Based mode since there were only 4 of us (4 didn't show up), and it was still great. Yes it is great with 8 but is also great with 4, 5, 6, or 7
@@All_Ice117 You play captain sonar when you happen to have 8 players and you need a game, I dont think you should ever feel the need to find 8 persons just to play it as lower player count opens up much better games, npi critically misunderstands the importance of player count to capt. sonars

Don't get me wrong, I love a pretty mini as much as anyone else but I think maybe it's time for our infatuation with overly detailed plastic too cool down just a smidge.

Captain Sonar is probably my favorite game. If this is like it, yep buying it now. That being said, the real time craziness and desperation is going to be lost here.

I would miss being able to just slow down or speed up. In Captain Sonar there were crucial times when I decided to not move/not give anything away.
Have to give respect to Tim Fowers- when he launched the Kickstarter for this, he explicitly said that this was not a game for everyone due to the very reasons you have stated!
Is it just me or we kind of need a let's play with SUSD? It would just be glorious and terrific fun!
Sounds good to me. I have ADHD and Captain Sonar is basically my own personal nightmare, so I would like something with a similar experience without 8 people talking over each other.
If you have ADHD you should already be great at talking over people 🤤

Properly excellent review. Amazing! I have had the game for a couple of months but only played it once 2 players - that was enough to convince me I should only play it with 4 but oh my god am I looking forward to when I get the chance to do that.
Couldn't agree more, Fowers does it again! We've played it a fair bit and it is a game of pure information management... and sharks. Also, this is one well lit and coloured video.

I've played once, and you're right, teaching it is *really* hard. I don't think I did a good job.
Despite that, the brilliance of the game was obvious by the end of it.
Trying again tonight, can't wait.
Good to know as 'hard to teach' makes it not for me to own! Happy to play and see though.
Update: played again tonight. Teaching is still hard, just went through everything step by step. Took a while, but was effective enough. Game time was close to 2 hours though.

I felt like this game was a good game, but not great. Overall while captain sonar really needs 6 this needs 4 which helps but I still think captain sonar is a better game.... This does look better though for sure

Seems good, but I can't afford that Tim Flowers gold.
I think we purchased the last copy available at GenCon, but the rulebook was so awful that the game just sat in the dining room unplayed for months, depressing me that I didn't want to play something that we had such high expectations for. I forced myself to learn the rules and we finally got a game in last week. I think I agree with everything you said in the review. Honestly, your video was a better intro to the game than anything Fowers Games put out. Great job, again.

I enjoyed the entertaining review however, How is all this plastic, cardboard, and complex rules beat Captain Sonar? I just don't see it. This review did one thing for me - it made me go find and purchase Captain Sonar and the 2 addons. I got tired of hearing them explain the rules. Ugghh!
