Joe Kapp and Willie Fleming were my heroes as a member of BC Lion Quarterback Club. Willie could dance thru people avg. 9 yards per carry. Joe only knew run straight ahead unfortunately his body took a terrible beating with early dementia from the days wen concussions were referred to as getting your bell rung...one tough hombre.

Yes 50-year longtime me being a Viking fan, you don't have to be a super bowl winner to be a legend, he was one tough sob! The hits he took in his career would put most NFL quarterbacks out today easily, he didn't have the most talent by far, but his grit and toughness, is what made him a legend, in that respect no NFL quarterback today could even carry his jockstrap!!!¡

That play at 2:39 was in the NFL championship game following the 1969 regular season. The Browns left outside linebacker, Jim Houston (82) was one of the bigger linebackers in the game. Houston got knocked out of the game trying to tackle Kapp. Kapp was a rough and tumble player, with what seemed to me to be a linebacker mentality.

Very sad to see this and hear this news. Joe Kapp was a NFL star a time when the men who played professional football loved the game far more than the money. Today's athlete seems to be the opposite (loves the money far more than the game). As a loyal fan of the Kansas City Chiefs, I respected the Vikings team, their Head Coach Bud Grant and their leader & QB Joe Kapp. I also worried that no lead was safe in Super Bowl 4 between the Vikings and Chiefs, and that Kapp could find a way to inspire his Viking teammates to come back in that game at any time. I knew the Chiefs defense was tough and hard to defeat but also knew Kapp was an exceptional leader and a tough man. So even though the score ended 23-7 in the Chiefs favor, I never felt secure about that game until all the time was off the clock. Kapp will forever have the respect and admiration of this Kansas City Chiefs fan. Hopefully he's now a part of the greatest football team of all time: Rest in peace Joe.

I'll never forget that 1969 season as a Viking fan of old. The 68 season set the stage for that Super Bowl 4 run in 1969. Baltimore beat Minnesota in the 68 playoff game by a score of 24-14. The Purple People Eaters defense starting hitting on super drive in the 68 season. The offense, with Joe Kapp and Gary Cuozzo alternating, was never up to the level of that awesome Viking Defense. When Joe was hot, he rallied that offense around him and played like they had a purpose. In the second game of the 69 season Minnesota played the legendary Baltimore Colts in Minnesota's Metropolitan Stadium. For a quarterback, whose team had been severally mauled in two games of the 68 season with these same Colts, Joe turned in a performance precious few pro quarterbacks had ever done before or since. Those two beat-down loss's in 1968 to Baltimore bothered Joe, and the rest of the Vikings. By games end, Joe had thrown a record tying 7-touchdown passes in the game. Joe had been criticized by media and others that he did not thrown a good spiral pass. His pass throw look like a dying duck that's been shot. Joe's pass would wiggle and wobble, sometimes turn end over end, but when the it counted, Joe was there. Baltimore was paid in full for the two beat-downs of the Vikings in1968, with interest. The 69 Vikings had a 12-2 win/loss season. They played and beat a tough Rams team to get to the final with the Cleveland Browns. Another magical day for Joe when Minnesota played Cleveland. By games end, a 51-3 beat down. Then to New Orleans for Super Bowl 4 as a 14-point favorite to win. They didn't win and Joe's magical year came to an end. Joe was his own worst enemy and thought he could fight management and win. He loss, then was swapped off to the Boston Patriots for the 1970 season. No magical year for Joe in Boston. No PurplePeople Eaters to helpJoe. A tough, born leader of men, when all the stars and moon line up together. His own worst enemy at the end of the day. RIP Joe, it's about time!

I remember Joe Capp as the Vikings QB after Fran had left! Being from Chicago we got to see the Vikings twice a year! I personally thought Joe was a better fit for Coach Bud Grants style of Football! With Joe at the helm and The Purple People Eaters Defensive Team! The Vikings were a tough out! Especially at home in the cold weather! No Dome! Come Sunday! the other Team's had better tighten their chin straps and adjust their jock straps! Because it was going to be a Donnybrook! All Day! Love seeing videos of the NFL in the 60's & 70's when it was still an hour football game unless a bunch of penalties? The Raiders Games were always over an hour! And not this 3 hours of commercials were a football game sometimes breaks out! And NO F_CKING TV TIMEOUTS! I don't want my team grabassing with the other team until the end of the GAME! Its football not a church sociall!
