    Thank you for your touching comment. Jeangu and his twin brother Xillan ( also in the video at 4.51-4.53 minutes Xillan is one of the backing vocals ) are born in Surinam, north of South America, which was a Dutch colony from 1667-1975. The Dutch exchanged Nieuw (New) Amsterdam (USA) with the British for Surinam ( In Dutch Suriname ) Nieuw Amsterdam became New York. All time low was the slavery trade crualty. The Dutch ( some European countries did the same like Great Brittain, France, Portugal, Spain and later Belgium and Germany in 19th century ) shipped in the 16th and 17th century people (slaves) from Africa, India, Dutch Indies (Indonesia- Java) and Sri Lanka ( Dutch Ceylon ) to work at the sugar plantations. The language Jeangu is singing in beside english is sranantongo ( Sranan = Surinam) There are about 22 languages spoken in Surinam. Everybody speaks Dutch and Sranantongo. It is amazing that there are so many languages because the population is relatively small about 1 million, 570.000 in Surinam and 350.000 live in The Netherlands. The Netherlands and Surinam have a close bond not surprisingly after a history of 350 years.
    Groeten uit De Nederlanden ( Greetings from The Netherlands )

      He uses an Old Sranan saying yu no man broko Mi, Mi na afu sensi. A afu sensi is an old coin. A half cent. An old cent you can exchange/ into two half cents. A half cent can not be broken any further. So you got to let it be. So if someone says mi na afu sensi, he/she is saying, I have reach a point where you can't hurt/break me anymore.

    He says: Yu no man broko mi. It means you can’t break me (in Surinamese 🇸🇷 )

    • @yaelcairo2655
      @yaelcairo2655 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      And in the end: Mi na afu sensi (meaning I am a half cent “if it makes any sense to you guys”). In Suriname we say mi na afu sensi when it comes to people why try to bring you down but can’t do it.

    The message of this song: From an age of colonialism, slavery and homophobia, we have evolved to a society that celebrates diversity and cultural differences --> The birth of a new age. "They spat on your crown and they poisoned your ground ... They burned your heroes at the stake, but your voice will echo on their names" "They buried your Gods, they imprisoned your thoughts ... They tried to drain you of your faith, but you are the rage that melts the chains. This ain't the end, no It's the birth of a new age." The song brings an ode to everyone who stands up for themselves and dares to celebrate the power of their autenticity. Yu no man broko mi, mi na afu sensi = I am already the smallest coin, no man can break me.

    Its the best song this year.
    The Chorus :
    Yu no man broko mi - you cant break me
    Mi na afoe sensi - i am a 1/2 (half) cent. 1/2 cent was a coin used in The Netherland, Suriname and i think the world. Because the half cent was allready the smalest payment method it couldnot be exchange. So you cant "break" it!

    Are you aware of the connection that Suriname en the Netherlands have with slavery? It lasted 4 century's , after that we(the netherlands) went further with Apartheid,wich is just abolished in 1994!! Now a days...a lot people don't know it or don't want to be remined of our joint history. I find his song a real good statement, even after all the slavery, misery and everything that 'we' took from them in the past, they al still not broken and can't be broken!!
