Fabelhaft! I just saw Fiddler last week, in the round no less, at Hale Center Theater in Sandy, UT. It was a marvelous production. This looks like it was a great time too!
I saw "Fiddler on the Roof" on broadway and I listened to the Yiddish version on repeat. This is making me so happy. I grew up in a culturally Jewish family and my grandparents spoke Yiddish a lot. Thank you for bringing this beautiful language back to life through this iconic musical.
1960's-1970's: No one wants to speak Yiddish anymore, Fiddler becomes a smash hit in Hebrew. 2020: Golde and family sing Sabbath Prayer in (probably) their mother tongue, Yiddish - on Zoom.
I ushered in Los Angeles for the original national touring company of Fiddler in the late '60's. Thus I watched this musical over 300 times (and got paid to do so!) This "Tradition" video is a perfect replication of the ORIGINAL Jerome Robbins choreography. I've never seen a video that did that this well. I hope it's archived in research and university libraries everywhere.
Goshhhh I only just learned about this production of Fiddler, would've loved to have gotten to see it in Yiddish (wish I could fully understand it though, only bits and pieces)! Really hoping it got a proshot filmed, would love to see it someday!
I have just come across this..and it is an absolute joy to listen to! ... I speak German ..and having listened to my mother speaking her 'Low German' , and also having experience of living on the Dutch border for a coupe of years (I spoke German, they spoke Dutch and we understood one another!)...I was thrilled by how much of this beautiful rendition I was able to understand. Of course, now I want to watch the whole production!!!
I'm Dutch, and this sounds like I'm listening to... like, a weird German. Don't mean that as an insult to Yiddish but like. I understand a decent bit but I feel like I should understand more than I do.
Fantastic! I had forgotten just how much German had been imported into Yiddish. Alas, the lead playing Tevia did not have the powerful voice like Topol. Of course, being in NYC, there had to be a couple of mashuganas wearing masks. Oy vey! LOL
It’s not a shanda and that’s enough for today. Everyone has such a shanah punim and a voice the rival Gabriel himself. To be fair, he blows the trumpet, but the point is made.
Of course it does. Yiddish is closely related. Think of it as a version of German with a bunch of Hebrew words mixed in along with a slightly Slavic element. This is/was the lingua franca of Eastern European Jewish civilization right up to the Holocaust.

As a German speaker, I'm blown away by how much I understand. I did this show in HS as Motel. One of the best experiences of my life.
Amazing!
Yiddish is mostly made up from German, much like Ladino being mostly Spanish with a dash or two of Hebrew, that's how diaspora languages are born.
Would be wonderful if the whole production got filmed for wide viewing. Beautiful.
Would love that!

Seriously the best “Tradition” I’ve ever seen! I really wish I could see this live

My Grammie would lose it seeing this! Merh!
Works so well in Yiddish even so I don't understand the language
Which rehearsal space is that?
Did they change the lyrics? The cast recording doesn’t have Tevye say “traditsye” going into the song
They're speaking another language. It's Yiddish.
yes, i meant compared to the 2018 yiddish recording of this show, of which this is a second run. @@buddhisminvietnamandoverseas

Best production of Fiddler ever
Will I enjoy it if I don’t speak Yiddish? Will there be subtitles?
The have intertitles like at the Met Opera.

Sounds like German language..
