Honestly FFI should hv trusted the popularity of The Lunchbox and let it be nominated. It was poor of them to site "Lunchbox has a major backing whereas The Good Way don't"bcs both were small buget movies with no commercial aspect. My guess is the FFI looks at past indian movies that got nominated in the top 5 at the oscars, and based upon that data, they try to predict what movie has higher odds and pick that as the official selection. Until now, Only 3 Indian movies have managed to get nominated, Mother India, Salam Bombay and Lagaan. The jury thinks based upon this that Oscars like rural India Poor India stories, and Slumdog millionare, though not an Indian movie but a movie about poor India has won so big at the oscars, the FFI purposely decides to send Rural or Poverty based movies. They did not find that in The LunchBox so that could also be a reason. This is also suggestive in other official entries like Gully Boy. This, if true, is however a skewed notion as what has worked in the past does not necessarily work in the future, global audience keep changing seeing how much Hollywood has loved RRR.
From a malayali perspective Ranbir can be considered as Mohanlal as both of them are inborn actors whereas as Ranveer Singh is like Mamooty keep learning and reinventing themselves to make.better version of themselves as an actor
