- Today, we’re shining a spotlight on a lesser-known Disney character, Fanny Cottontail. While she may not be as iconic as Mickey or Minnie, Fanny’s unique role in Disney history makes her a fascinating character to explore. Let’s hop into her story!
Fanny Cottontail’s Origins
Fanny Cottontail first appeared in the “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit” series. She debuted in the 1928 short The Fox Chase, created during the era when Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks were crafting Oswald’s adventures. Fanny was envisioned as one of Oswald’s many love interests, a trope common in early animation.
Despite her brief appearances, Fanny’s design and personality stood out. She was depicted as a cheerful and charming bunny, wearing a bonnet and a dress-a classic look for animated female characters of the time. Her interactions with Oswald added a playful, romantic dynamic to the series.
Character Traits and Role
Fanny was a quintessential representation of early animation’s comedic and lighthearted style. Her personality was sweet and flirtatious, and her primary role was to provide romantic tension and comedic situations. For instance, in The Fox Chase, Fanny’s presence spurs Oswald to try and impress her, leading to humorous mishaps during a chaotic fox hunt.
While her screen time was limited, Fanny embodied the whimsical charm that defined the Oswald series. Her expressive animation and playful demeanor made her a memorable addition, even if she didn’t become a recurring character.
Fanny in Epic Mickey
Fanny’s legacy was given new life in the 2010 video game Epic Mickey. In this game, Disney delved into its archives to resurrect forgotten characters, including Fanny. She appears as one of the “forgotten” residents of Wasteland, a world populated by characters who had faded from Disney’s mainstream history.
In Epic Mickey, Fanny is depicted as a nostalgic figure. She retains her cheerful personality but also carries a sense of longing for her past fame. Her inclusion in the game was a nod to Disney enthusiasts and highlighted her place in the company’s rich character history.
Fanny’s Legacy
Though Fanny Cottontail’s appearances were limited, her role in the Oswald series and Epic Mickey ensures her place in Disney’s legacy. She represents an era of experimentation and creativity in animation, when characters were created to fill specific comedic or narrative roles.
Fanny’s reemergence in Epic Mickey showcases Disney’s appreciation for its history and the fans who cherish even its most obscure characters. Her story serves as a reminder of the countless forgotten gems in Disney’s vast character library.
Conclusion
Fanny Cottontail may not have had the spotlight for long, but her contributions to the Oswald series and her revival in Epic Mickey have cemented her status as a beloved piece of Disney history. She’s a testament to the charm and whimsy of early animation and a symbol of Disney’s ability to breathe new life into its past.

I've been summoned, i love her sm yall
Honestly fanny is my fav love intrest for oswald since she kinda matches his mischief bringing, like oswald is a very quick almost always emotion driven character and he's got a short fuse and mainly very mischiefous plans that honestly sometimes are even a bit meanspirited
while she's sassy and has him running around a bit, she also matches that mischief of his (at least in all wet) when it comes to plans, like Oswald often get's plans(that often fail) like these so seeing his love intrest also have them was pretty nice, especialy since her end goal was beasictly "mwahahaha give him a chance to save me so when he's done I can give him a kiss >:)"
Also id like to say we already have "sweet girl X sweet boy" with minnie and mickey
So since oswald is more chaotic and pesimistic i'd think having his love intrest match that would have been nicer than having another "sweet girl" around
Idk i just really like fanny, imo her last apperance with her redesign and drastic personality change was her best and I still mourn the fast we didnt get to see more of her and oswald after that
Though I do have to say she very much isnt still around, she hasn't been used in 97 years and one time she was it was as a png for a boots and not an accual character of any kind, also the reason why it says their relationship is undescribed is specificly bc we havent hear anything about or from her like i said in 97 years, its not canon that there exe's or friends or still lovers or one sided crushed or something else, anything at all bc well shes just not adressed anywhere, the only reason why she has that "ex girlfriend" title is bc of meta information we have and not anything set in any story
I really respect and admire your Fanny fandom! I really hope Disney finds a way to bring her back in some fashion. Since Ortensia is Oswald's current love interest, Fanny could comeback as a stand alone character like Goofy, no love interest needed. Sure one could argue that Clarabell is Goofy's love interest, but Clarabell is also tied to Horace Horsecollar as his love interest. I like the stand alone characters with ambiguous personal lives.
I know about her existence thanks to a BatIM fan comic from Tumblr by a Sans AU artist
Nice! I had a really passing knowledge of her before doing this episode. I had always been more familiar with Ortensia.
