This was the first book of Agatha Christie I ever read, and they changed the characters and their relationships so much to fit Hollywood’s view that it is almost unrecognisable from the book. The arrogance to think they can make a book written by a master and ‘improve it’ astounds me... I was really looking forward to seeing one of my favourite books on screen.
Yeah definitely some huge changes to the characters! The one from the 70s is closer to the book
Poirot had once been a policeman in Belgium in the books. He comes to England in The Mysterious Affair at Styles (published in 1916) as a Belgian refugee (he has already retired from the force).

But during some time off from the Police Force in Belgian, he does some work as a detective (the Chocolate Box) where he meets his first true love interest: Virginie Mesnard - who gifts him the iconic lapel pin. Then, he becomes a true private detective in England since he is so good working with his "Little Gray Cells". LOL
How can you not have seen the seventies version of this movie? It's the best.
There was a line in the movie about how Jackie had the part of Cleopatra in a play but the director replaced her with Linnie a week before the show went on. The thought the movie was style over substance and over acted in parts. Like the film makers felt modern audiences would be bored with a straight forward murder mystery.
I would agree. I like Rose Leslie, but she was way too silly for Jackie who is a calculated vindictive character
Peter Ustinov played Poirot for laughs but was essentially very true to Christie's vision.
I'd love to see a Book vs TV comparison. Suchet just kills it as Poirot (pun not intended).

@@WhytheBookWins The Suchet series is about 13 seasons long= I know many Poirots LOL but Suchet is by far the best = Suchet IS Poirot LOL He studied Poirot so well and portrait the character to the "T"... in my opinion.
If you enjoy Hercule Poirot I would suggest trying the british tv series by the same name with David Suchet as the Belgian detective. They did Murder on the Nile in 2004.
Suchet is the best Poirot IMHO.
I am not a Christie purist. In previous adaptions of Christie's works things have been changed and i am fine with that but Brannagh's Poirot is just so far from the base material. Poirot is not some self doubting, lovelorn, almost emo-esque man who also is a part time action hero. I loathe it.

The 70s version of the movie is on youtube free movies! I just finished watching it then came straight here. You can see the differences in the choices between both movies. Plus, Angela Landsbury and Maggie Smith is in it!
There isn’t a long setup of Poirot’s backstory in the book. Not having that would definitely have moved things along.
I haven't seen the Kenneth Brannagh film but I have seen the Peter Ustinov version which is excellent. Mia Farrow and Simon Mccorquendale are also great as Jackie and Simon.
Poirot did at least consider marrying the Countess Rossakoff at the end of the story The Capture of Cerberus. His confirming a large florist's bill and speculation that he might "marry and range myself" shock Miss Lemon into forgetting all about her filing system.
There was a tv film with David Suchet (the best Poirot) which is worth a look too
This was pretty disappointing to me compared to Branagh’s prior Poirot film. The ‘78 film is also a rough act to follow given the excellent cast they had access to. The book is one of my mom’s favorite Poirot stories

Just found your channel tonight. I would also love to hear a movie/book comparison of the Seventies version and also the David Suchet version which I think is the closest to the novel. (I listened to the audiobook last year). I have a soft spot for the Seventies’ version; it was filmed on location in Egypt, I’ve seen videos on the careful costume design and I can watch it over and over again. Also since Suchet is considered by many as the perfect Poirot, I enjoyed his version a lot (a young Emily Blunt is Lynette).

I started the movie, and once I am down I will watch this one! I;ve seen some of the Suchet movies and agree he is wonderful!
In the book I was going back and forth; I remember thinking for a while it could be the accountant. The thing with the movie is that they made Simon and Jackie's motive obvious, but everyone else's motives felt like they were included almost as an afterthought.
What if, instead of the brief exposition we get in the movie the accountant has a full scene like he does in the book? He's in his office and hears about the marriage, and from his reaction we know he's in deep trouble. Then he rushes off to Egypt for the 'accidental' meeting. What if the movie had gone with the show, don't tell rule with the maid? Instead of waiting until after the murder for the maid to sit and tell her story to Poirot, how about having it brought up before the murder through some kind of interaction between the maid and Lynette? That way when the murder does happen we'd be thinking of several possibilities, all with solid reasoning. There was time for all of this. That's the main issue I have with including so much backstory for Poirot. I don't mind that they included more information about him, but it the screen time devoted to it would have been better spent establishing the motives of the other suspects.

The 70s movie is a follow-up of the 1974 Orient Express one, in which Poirot is played by a phlegmatic Peter Ustinov. I by far prefer the characterization of David Suchet for Poirot - he better captures P's effete mannerisms. Nonetheless, they are both good movies that I would recommend.

In a movie where Agatha actually tries to solve a murder, it is pointed out to her that it’s never the obvious person who does it in the murder mysteries so she wrote Death on the Nile so the twist was that the obvious person (people) did do it.
Genius! And while it felt like it should be the obvious person she wrote it in a way that made me think otherwise!

David Suchet played Poirot for many years, the 2004 version of Death on the Nile was almost exactly like the book, there were a few changes. But I would like to see you do something on that version and the 2010 version of Murder on the Orient Express.

Yeah that's correct! During the scene where Poirot is speaking with Jacqueling after drinking the champagne, and trying to dissuade her from the course she's on; he explains that he feels guilty for her death because he was to be discharged from the hospital but insisted that his fiancé come see him, and on the way there, her train is wrecked by and she's killed by that mortar shell.

Were hesitant to comment, as I feel you’re very keen on what you doing. But what a hell, maybe it could be helpful.
I see it is more of a podcast, but as video it would benefit to be better structured. Also repeating the same things is an issue, as well as too many personal recollections, that not giving any worth to the content. The rhythm and flow stumble with it all the time.
Came here to hear the actual comparison between the book and movie, and get a glimpse of it just after half of huge 30m video. Resembles the slow movie exposition. Reducing the excess chat would make it solid tight 10-12 min, in my opinion of course.
Don’t know if all your vids are like that, as this the only one I saw yet. Maybe my comments are irrelevant, excuse me if so.
But the whole concept of channel is exiting and promising. I wish you growth, improvements and grateful audience.

This started as a podcast, and last year I decided to film them as videos, while still releasing the audio as a podcast.
I have thought of posting the full length video, then editing out certain clips that talk about certain moments and uploading them as like 5 minute videos for those who want shorter videos that are more focused.
I would be curious if you feel this way about my other book vs movie videos as well. If you watch any others let me know if they are any better (or worse 😬 lol)
Good review. I think you should try out the new Batman. It is a comic book, but this version seems to be more noir and less superheroey, and so maybe it will be more to your taste?
I dislike how the made Book a thief, as it ruined a really nice guy. I wish they made it the accountant or the other guy, the doctor.

You need to view both the earlier adaptations of Death on the Nile featuring Peter Ustinov (1978) and also David Suchet (2004). The K Branagh version, in my opinion, is superficial and not patch on the other two….!!! I was so disappointed….! By the way, David Suchet is Poirot….!!!!!😊

if you are OKAY with Poirot shaving his mustache then you obviously do not know Poirot very well....Poirot WOULD HAVE NEVER shave his mustache N E V E R !!! To see him without his mustache was a HUGE MISTAKE on the director's part --- it was a disgraceful ending an insult to the character and the AMAZING author Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie.

I like his Murder on the Orient Express much better than this movie, The beginning and the end does not fit his character or anything he shared of his life. There is a back story in one of the short stories called; The Chocolate Box, his only failure. It is very good. My favorite of the two other adaptions, is the one with Peter Ustinov, but I love the David Suchet version too. Both are much better than this movie. I love a lot of the actors in this cast but I was so very disappointed in this film. I love the book, it was the first Agatha Christie I ever read.
The best version of the movie is bbc version with Emily blunt.

Pls watch the original movie! It is soooooo goooood. In my opinion much better than the new movie. I guess it’s the charm of it :) and it has Maggy Smith in it.. can’t get any better than that :D
The 70s version is SO much better. I couldn't believe how bad this newer version was compared to the 70s version.
I did watch that one, but for some reason never did a follow up video on it 😬 But it is definitely a more faithful adaptation

You criticizing Poirot mustache LOL the whole point of his mustache is that IT IS ridiculous YET he is proud of it. The mustache is his unique trademark. Poirot without a mustache just isn't Poirot! But I guess only a true Agatha Christie fan would understand this...Part of Poirot's OCD behavior is to constantly focus and care for that mustache. Taking away Poirot's mustache is like taking away Sherlock Holmes' pipe ! It is just WRONG !!
The 78 version is a thousand times better than the 2022 version. Fro. the cast to the production to the writng......There really is no comparison.

if you don‘t remember the book‘s characters, finely honed & balanced by agatha christie, why are you talking about the book at all? sry for being kind of severe, but this is how disrespect begins. pennington is one of lynette‘s *trustees*, appointed in her father’s testament, not a mere accountant. so he is betraying her (and her father‘s trust) in a criminal sense. lynette‘s marriage is a real threat to him. et cetera. i stop watching now. don‘t be scatterbrained, you could do great stuff.
The cinematography was horrible. Tight close ups on faces so there was no blocking or composition. The explaining scene was shot like an action movie with the Michael Bay rotating camera.
The 70s version is a million times better, more charming, more authentic. This is plastic dross.
Suchet version of Death on the Nile was a MUSH better version where there director actually follow closely the book narrative- How about how RIDICULOUS was the plot about being shelled as they advanced into the enemy trenches??? That made no sense - Many characters were missing ... I really missed Cornelia and the socialist dude and the aristocrat and the pearls subplot incident and... LOL. Waaaayyy too much of the original plot was changed while Agatha Christie writing is already so wonderfully witty and clever those changes were really not necessary. It is just a different story. Scenes and wardrobe were breathtaking sure ....but I just dont think the movie is a faithful adaptation of the Death on the Nile novel by Agatha Christie....
Movie was massively racist and written that way to push a narrative. They took a good story and ruined it to sell racism. Even the opening scene which is supposed to be historically accurate was inaccurate. Also added lesbians which I don’t think was in the book, but again they do that to push a narrative in the movie. I defiantly won’t see the next movie because of how they did this one, if they do another, older movies are better and cheaper/free.
