I sympathize with Carl, I lived in West Broward County as a teenager from 1971 through the late 70s. It was raw, the fishing was ridiculous and the development and the Hydrilla control in what would become the urbanization of West Broward canals just wrecked the place. Priceless reference to Lindsley Lumber! I worked for Coral Ridge properties on a crew that built all the new roads and did the landscaping on the west side of Coral Springs in the mid 70s and watched the place explode into the disappointingly overcrowded world that it has become. I had the fortune to guide Carl at 7 Lakes Lodge in the late 90s, one of the most interesting people I've ever met.
I just got recommended Carl’s book. I first moved to the Lower Keys in 2003. Moved back after my Coast Guard retirement in 2019. The conversation about the keys is perfect. I think all the time But where else in Fl is any better.
Great interview. I'm glad Carl spoke about why he left the Keys and the development that has been so destructive to the environment. It's not good when most of these podcasts are about " memories". He lives in Vero Beach and fishes in the Bahamas and Everglades City. Wow.
Fantastic podcast, thanks! I grew up in the same area at the same time as he did. He is a wonderful storyteller, love his writings. I fish with my grown son as much as possible too, a true blessing.
I grew up in Miami at the same time Carl grew up in Broward. We ran the canals the same way and fished Biscayne Bay. We caught tarpon and snook from the canals leading into the Bay. I've often said we had a Huckleberry Finn life as kids growing up down there. The Everglades and surrounding areas were our playground.
Carl, you are my hero!!! Read all your books and there is no one anywhere close to you, hilarious, exiting and moving (your Ladies i'm in love with every one of them 😅).Be well!!
Love this. “Unemployment block.” Brilliant. I had a hook removed from my finger at Mariners. It was ridiculous that they pricked my finger twice to numb it before removing the hook once. Made no sense except that it earned more revenue for Mariners.
This was in my Opinion one of the best interviews that you guys have done !! --- I am now going to read this author ! --- Can anyone recommend one of his best books to start with? ----

I’m reading Bad Monkey. It’s taking place in the Keys. Funny detective story. Great stuff.
Good work, Andy. Enjoyed the perspective of change and the realization that the fish will adapt and survive. Will look forward to “Wreckers.”

Always great to wake up to a freshly dropped Mill House!
Great writer
Fort Lauderdale has produced so many great fisher people. Great guest.

I would start with Tourist Season and continue reading chronologically. His non fiction books are pretty great too.
I'll bet Kenny Collette would love to hear you tell that story.
You'll never kill a poon if you fish with cid.
