Bob Rich | Mill House Podcast - Episode 123
Bob Rich is a giant in the world of fly fishing, conservation, and storytelling. I have known Bob for many years and he is the best fishing companion an angler could have. We have traveled the world together with President George H.W. Bush, Sandy Moret, Johnny Morris and countless others fishing destinations only one can dream of. Bob was a Bonefish Tarpon Trust Founding member, and has helped the Florida Redbone series with Gary Ellis to fight and find the cure for Cystic Fibrosis. He is also a very accomplished author with five books under his belt including, “Looking Through Water” which will appear soon on the big screen with actor Michael Douglas and son, Cameron. The movie is going to be called, “Blood Knot.” Later this month, Rich will receive the Lefty Kreh Award for Lifetime Achievement in Conservation, which is BTT’s highest honor, in recognition of his support of fisheries conservation.
On today’s podcast, we cover the expansive life of one of my better friends, Bob Rich.

did he mention an expected date for the angler of the oval office book?
I watched this because I found out recently about his accident. I hope he pulls through. I have all his books. It was a great interview. I fish similar water being on LI, NY. I got to meet you a few years back at a Jersey Show. You were very gracious with your time. Thanks Olympian
“All fiction is largely autobiographical and much autobiography is, of course, fiction.” P.D. James It’s interesting to me that the “man who has everything” has spent so much of his spare time fishing and writing. A man after my own heart.
❤True friend ship great show 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Time flying very fast
I lived in KW from 81-2005 and knew Fitz. What a great guy. I wish him well. Seeing your pod cast brought back to my old KW days.
It pretty much (though we'll never know the endless what ifs) took every single thing to happen Rob's commitment to Doug and violating his own turnaround time, Fischer becoming afflicted with what Ed Viesturs believes to be HACE (high altitude cerebral edema) maybe as a consequence of having to make several trips up and down the mountain (I believe someone got injured or maybe killed, it might have been the sherpa who died somewhere near camp 2), the fact the ropes didn't get fixed, maybe partly as a consequence of one of the sherpa short-roping Sandy Pittman, not quite a journalist like Krakauer but stirred up publicity for the expedition, Krakauer himself in that Rob may (we don't know) have felt an added pressure to succeed
I want to fish with that guy.
Fascinating interview.
Great guides are angler whisperers. Carlos is obviously a passionate and great angler and seems like a super nice guy. I very much enjoyed hearing his explanation of the history of the IGFA.
He said "the wind was howling" and that plane flew past sounding exactly like howling wind under those headphones and for a split second this incredibly poised man looked as though he had seen a ghost. Recovered immediately.
So he is no longer on the road due to hearing loss.
Am I the only one who is amazed that he skied down capital peak? That’s amazing!
A real nice guy too ❤
Great interview
It takes a strong-willed person to stay out of the alcohol and drug scene in the outfitting industry. I watched the combo destroy many what could have been great careers in the industry. Well done and kudos to Brad for a successful escape and career, not easy to pull that off. Nice pod guys.
Great podcast.
Last fall I watched the movie Everest for the first time and I wondered how accurate the film actually was, so I watched a few documentaries, including this interview. I’m just fascinated how people can spend all that time and effort to climb to the top of a mountain, only to see nothing but snow-caps. I guess that’s my limited, subjective opinion. Some time ago, I was in the Adirondacks and hiked to the top of Mount Algonquin. It was a sunny fall day and when I got to the summit, the whole mountain range was peaked with autumn colors. It was breath taking, so I guess beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. By the way, great interview. It’s hard to believe that someone with such a soft spoken voice could be such a bad a%% mountaineer.
1:11:30 Despite Pittman’s troubles on the descent, she descended faster than Krakauer, and had an ascent time only 33 minutes slower.
54:43 “…we rochambeau’d for who went first…” lol, spoken like a true Buff.
Those look like ragworms..in Denmark (especially early spring), they start spawning and our coastlines will be filled with these. The searun brown trout goes crazy over them as well.
19:36 “Running up the (Maroon) Bells…” like it’s no big deal. Not all the great guys are humble (although a surprising amount are), but only the great AND classy guys act this humble about something a person could justifiably brag about. This guy appears to be classy and great.
15:45 To those who don’t know, ‘skinning’ (cross-country skiing uphill) from Highlands base to the top of Highlands Bowl is no small feat in itself, even to fit individuals. Doing it ‘before breakfast’ is double epic. Doing it five days a week is beyond epic.
Thanks for the context, I'm watching from Australia so I am unfamiliar with some of the landmarks mentioned :)
A wonderful description of being the highest person in the world & feeling like a 3rd Grader. Great smile on his face. His answer to ‘How does Everest sit in your heart now’ was insightful.
Great production. What a fucking life!

1:11:49 is such a crazy moment for an airplanes engines to be heard
Anatholi went up and down not because he did not used oxygen like Neil is suggesting but because he was the most fit of them all and he could do it quickly, so why saying this. Stop changing your story man!
The scene at 42:02 is weird...just a rough cut-then you see the guy with the deer on the wall behind him-and he starts asking questions about UFOs or whatever...I recommend taking "Movie Editing 101"...:-)
As usual a great guest. Thanks
Listening to most of Boukreev's critics, including Neil, about oxygen, people might get the impression that Boukreev reached the summit and immediately ran down because without the use of oxygen he was freezing and could not stay on the summit. It is strange that Beidleman, who knew that Boukreev had been on the summit for about an hour waiting for clients, for some reason did not say this, but repeated the myth that Anatoli did not wait for anyone and ran down. Boukreev reached the summit at 1:07 p.m. and stayed on the summit until approximately 2:30 p.m. waiting for other climbers to summit. During that time only two clients from Scott Fischer expedition made the top. What he wrote later, " concerned that others were not coming onto the summit I began to wonder if there were difficulties down the mountain. I made the decision to descent." Beidleman stayed on the summit and knows all this details, but for some reason, even calling Anatoli his friend, does not mention it in this interview.
Must be mentioned that all people on Scott’s team (except Scott) summited and (eventually) descended safely. Also Scott’s team allocated four cylinders per client (vs Hall’s three) and had two oxygen caches on the route (vs Hall’s one). Boukreev is often admonished (?) for not being in position to help Scott, but he WAS in position to help the clients (his job) and some of Hall’s (not his job).
Fished with Gary a whole bunch. My best day ever was Long Key. We jumped 14 Tarpon on a fly that day. Probably was around 1986 or so. Many great days on Garys spot there on Long Key. Great to see your still fishin' Gary!!
That intro music needs more of an apology that the fish handling.
This was a good one! Well done!
I've never had cable in my adult life. I am 55.
this may have been posted 3 years ago but this is from the 90s....I am pretty sure Noling went to Texas years ago. Anyone still fishing out of Marina Portafino?
The comment beginning at minute 16:38 is so profound. I totally relate to how the world “disappears” when on the water
One of my favorites, thanks.
Such a great man and a true friend !! Tims knowledge and attention to detail will always be instilled in those who spent time around him. All the guides and staff at Taylor Creek Flyshop absorbed so much from this man
This guy is f****** awesome 😅 would fish with him anyday
Whenever I needed life advice, there were always three people who I sought out; my mom, my dad and Tim Heng. Fishing is cool and all, but Tim taught so many of us on how to be good, loving and caring men of purpose. He reach goes way beyond fishing and that is why the Heng is the legend that he is.
good thing theres a stripping bucket
Scott Collins put me on my first bonefish on my 35th birthday in Feb 2007. Later that summer, hired him again and we hooked up 3x to tarpon. Shorty there after he and Dalu set the scene ablaze with their tournament fishing. Best guide I have ever chartered - a pioneer of the 21st century inshore keys fishing for sure. My 16-year-old son (youngest of 4) and I now make the annual pilgrimage from Virgina to Marathon chasing tarpon trailering our beer can 2016 Bass Tracker. You ever see a bare aluminum Bass Tracker down there it might be us!
I'll take: wow, for 500 Alex...
Lmfao I had to come to TH-cam to see Andy on the smelling salts
Great videos and great music guys!!! Tight lines!!!
Poking the flat! I think he’s onto something there haha
So glad I found this podcast. Been going through watching episodes and loving it!
This was one of the most magical episodes I’ve ever seen. The stoke level for that permit is why I love fishing so much. You can tell when a guide is just going through the drudgery of another day on the water but Jeff seems like it’s his first time and its so special to see that aspect from a guide. That middleweight tarpon in clear water was amazing too. Almost looked like it was flying under the water it was so clear.
