Earth versus the flying saucers. Is a classic movie. I'm a 80's born person. I have always enjoyed movies like this. They are good. No one makes them like this anymore. This is good in color as well, in black and white. Hollywood's glory days. Even throw the movie studios acted like. They owned their actors and actresses.

The coloration in this film is excellent. Just the right amount of saturation. however. B+W has unappreciated virtues. At the time of this movie, B+W was the standard. Color was reserved for hi-budget films. Today it is a style like impressionism. It encouraged suspension of disbelief and it haunts dreams and memories like a charcoal sketch. Color is great for special effects but they are so over-used that it has become, ho-hum and secondary to the story.. That being said, B+W has its place and it is best represented some of these old movies
Apparently Ray Harryhousen was in favour of having the movie Colourised . Have it on DVD with both versions. Also, 20 million Miles to Earth another great Harryhousen movie
When all we had was black&white TV , a lot of peoples sleeping dreams were in B&W. I seen this movie many times in B&W , I enjoyed it more in living color .
@@marklmansfield I stated that in the beginning of my posts. This film was fine example of colorization. Today, it is a matter of style and not to disagree in matters of taste, I can't picture Paper Moon or Last Picture Show in color... There was a sequel planned, but it never got going. It was about an alien chef who comes to Earth, and opens a restaurant. It is so successful, the other local restaurant owners attack him. Alas, Earth vs the Frying Saucer was never made.
I love how they use a differential analyzer, which is an analog computer designed to solve differential equations by integration, as a means of translating the alien language..... I love these 1950s Science fiction films!
I first saw this movie on its first release in April 1956, on a double feature bill with the first true life documentary about UFOs, titled "U.F.O." (UA, 1956). They boggled my mind and gave this boy nightmares of an alien invasion at age 8-1/2. Ray Harryhausen's saucers are incredibly animated, and the visual and audio effects are spectacular. Paul Frees contributed great voiceover work. Morris Ankrum is well cast as General John Hanley. Hugh Marlowe in his cigarette-edged voice is great star material, after his role as Tom, the Judas character in DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (Fox, 1951). Joan Taylor is good as his devoted wife assistant as well as her other co-starring role in Ray Harryhausen's 20 MILLION MILES TO EARTH (Columbia, 1957).
One of my favorites growing up. I remember it being shown in the 60's when I was young, always watched it when it was on TV. They did a great job with the animation for that time!
Was suprised to learn, THIS movie beat out the movie with Leslie Neilsen and "Robby the robot" for top honors!!! Kind of helps show what people REALLY want in a movie!!!😮
If you like the thought of DC going kaboom, then you will very much enjoy the movie, Independence Day! Not only is DC destroyed but the aliens also take out New York and Los Angeles!
Joan Taylor was a beautiful woman. Her style of dressing was perfect. I could look at these sc-fi classics all day long. Excellent movie. Just like in The Day the Earth Stood Still they start shooting almost immediately
Thank you very much. One of my favourites is The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) and I have many others in my collection that are fantastic as well. War of the Worlds (1953) was also very good. As was "2001 A Space Odyssey". There are almost too many good movies to "count" in the genre. I saw all of them in a theatre on the "big screen" and that made them very special. What I find interesting is that the common thread in (most of) these movies is almost identical. Thanks so much for this link. As another person commented (or something to the effect) "I do not do re-colourized movies", I actually enjoy both. It gives one a different perspective. I am not interested in endless CGI nonsense anymore. Humans are being displaced just as many of these movies state when you really listen to the dialogue. I watched "Star Wars" the day it premiered in 1977 and it was a good yarn. Lucas drew upon many "sources" for the "Force" and so on and so forth. No disrespect to CGI artists at all. CGI is both an art as well as a science. I find the "classics" including Metropolis (1927) spellbinding. We are always able to learn and movies, music, and many of our experiences and likes and/or dislikes are subjective. My advice is to enjoy everything that you are able to do in this life whilst we are able to do so. Again, thanks very much. Have fun folks. Carpe Diem. And further, seize the micron as well.
This on the year I was born, those monsters didn’t appreciate architecture, odd how they didn’t destroy the White House, the humans appeared a little weak and ineffective to have made any impression, I except that all 36 actors this were now dead, and this film was a tribute to them.
This is among the finest early ‘Flying Saucer’ films ever conceived. In the DVD set of the production, I found the audio commentary disheartening due to criticisms of Hugh Marlowe who also appeared in The Day The Earth Stood Still.
I am proud to say that when I was 10 years old, I started watching these science fiction movies at the theater. Back then, a movie might not return to the theater ever again. It wasn't until around 1980 that movies appeared more frequently on TV, especially around holidays. Some of the science fiction movies at that time imitated the current trends of the UFO genre. I wondered if the producers knew about the Roswell incident or the invasion of DC in the early 1950s. Just a thought.
One of the first experiments many physics students will conduct at university is to measure the electron mass - 9.1093837139(28)×10−31[1] kg or thereabouts. Pretty light by normal human experience, but definitely non-zero. Not that you need mass, as such, to experience gravity; take photons, for example. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electron_mass
As a kid, every time it came on the TV I would watch it. Of course it was black and white. The flying saucers were the work of stop motion animator Ray Harryhausen. He was also responsible for such movies as Jason and the Argonauts and first men in the Moon.
I remember, as a kid, being truly scared when the saucers appeared in the sky. Great special effects for the time. Did Mystery Science Theater 3000 ever do this one? That would have been almost as great as the actual movie.
Alot of 1990's electronic music artist sampled alot of effects from this movie...I recognize quite a few watching this....wow, this movie is fun & enjoyable...thank you
I remember watching this in the theater as a child. It was always in black and white. This is the first time I have seen it colorized and my brain is not processing it well. Yes it is well done but, these should be shown as they were originally. They had even more impact on young minds that had to "fill in the blanks" with imagination. The problem with movies of today is that that part of the equation has been removed. As with everyone else chiming in, the Day the Earth Stood Still is still one of my most favorite movies of all time. Along with Casablanca and others. LOL
I love Hugh Marlow's voice. I think I watch this repeatedly to hear it. He, Gary Merrill and Joseph Cotton all had such dynamic voices. Radio was still king back then, that's all they had was their voices then. Such an odd change from silent movies with no voice, then radio hit nationwide and it was all voice and no visual. Voice actors from this period are skilled and talented actors.
1st time I saw this was at dad's Base Theater in 1959, at age 6. Now I'm 71 and still watch it at least twice a year. Yeah the Military usually waited a while for film Rents to go down. 👍👍 10👑 1:08:55 Are actually 2 P-51's that collided during a training exercise being filmed. 🤠
If this was a modern movie, around 7 minutes into the movie, you would have heard a thousand ummmms, but Uhhhhh. I thought we humans are supposed to be more intelligent now and advanced. Classic movies never disappoint. Thank you for the upload.
It is amazing how many of the "stars" in this movie were regulars on the Perry Mason show. This isn't even close to "Forbidden Planet" for story or special effects but I am having fun watching it.

I just notice a name in the opening credits, Donald Keyhoe. He was the Director of The National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP). Is this a warning from him? This film was originally in black and white.
Donald Keyhoe was ex military assigned to project "sign" which was the original military investigation of the UFO phenomenon in the last 40's/Early 50's

The alien outfits were comprised of "frozen electricity." They must have been pretty darned light to wear, given that electrons have no mass.
No, electrons have mass. It's just that their mass is so small compared to protons and neutrons, we skip over it when describing the atomical mass.
One of the first experiments many physics students will conduct at university is to measure the electron mass - 9.1093837139(28)×10−31[1] kg or thereabouts. Pretty light by normal human experience, but definitely non-zero. Not that you need mass, as such, to experience gravity; take photons, for example.
