    At my old gig, Punch Andrews was notorious when it came to Seger. We always had to make sure Bob Seger CDs were front and center and well positioned across the board. Plus they were anti-digital at the time, perhaps that's changed. I do appreciate the early records some for sure. And that Detroit Nuggets boot is fantastic. We see it from time to time here.

      @@seekingathread That’s interesting. Punch is a pretty notorious figure in Detroit. Unfortunately, I think he’s actually hurt Seger’s legacy (in the long term). By focusing his career away from those early records, all the public knows in 2024 are those soft ballads. We have still have never seen a career spanning box-set. And some of Seger’s most important albums and singles have still never even been acknowledged. 2-3 of his best records have vanished from his discography. That’s just a complete lack of vision. Thanks for watching. Shawn

    I just stumbled across this episode and you’re my favorite new channel!
    Dude, I LOVE the Nuggets series and 6Ts psych garage punk, but like an idiot had NO idea Bob Seger was a pioneer in the genre. And I’ve never seen nor heard of “Michigan Nuggets” but damn, I know what I gotta get now! Thanks for sharing the 411.

      Early Seger just gets overlooked because he became such a huge mainstream success later in his career. Check out the compilation Bob Seger and the Herd. It’s available on-line and a few local shops may have a copy. East Side Story is well worth hunting down. Thank you for watching. Cheers. Shawn

    Cool history to know about Bob! Great Michigan comp! I have the 1977 Michigan Rocks comp. It has:
    MC-5*- Kick Out The Jams
    The Stooges - 1969
    The Bob Seger System*- Heavy Music
    Detroit (2) w/ Mitch Ryder-Rock & Roll
    Frost*- Rock & Roll Music
    Ted Nugent & The Amboy Dukes- Journey To The Center Of Your Mind
    Mitch Ryder-Long Hard Road
    Third Power*-Persecution
    SRC-I'm So Glad
    The Rationals-Respect
    I just picked up a sealed copy of Smokin’ OP’s can’t wait to crack it open and spin it!
    Great video, Shawn!

      Thank you so much. Appreciate that. The comp you mentioned is excellent. I believe it has the alternate name “stems and seeds”. I also have it - it’s become rather sought after in recent years. Was considering doing a similar video for Ted Nugent. The first two Amboy Duke records are excellent. And possibly the last one before Ted went solo. Thanks again. Shawn

      Noah is an interesting album. And very rare. It’s also an album that features another vocalist on some of the tracks. I understand that Seger was considering leaving the music business and wanting to attend college. So his manager brought in another singer. Lol. Seven I don’t know as well. Thank you for watching and I appreciate your comments. Cheers. Shawn

    I'm originally from Detroit but found this album at Rasputin records in Berkeley CA in 1976 when I moved out here/Still have it in my collection at number 883/1000. Still have my early albums from my Detroit Daze/Amboy Dukes/Third Power/Frost/SRC/Rationals etc. Enjoy your show 🎸

      @@RobertSmith-ix1cu That a great find. I’m guessing not many of those albums made it outside Michigan. Punch Andrew was furious about those songs getting bootlegged. I heard some interesting stories about him. Yeah. All those bands you mentioned are amazing. Some of the best music of the decade. Still looking for a good copy of SRC. That record has become much sought after in recent years. Appreciate you watching and sharing your story. Cheers. Shawn

    Ha! A bold intro, I think you’ll catch some heat. I don’t listen to much classic rock anymore but many times I enjoy croaking out a Seger classic playing acoustic guitar. I was unaware of this early stuff however, just as you said. Really great stuff you share here, thanks. I’m going to see what I can find. Live bullet is a great LP.

      Hope it didn’t come off too badly. I mean no offense. Sometimes be opinionated is good. Adding to the fun. And I respect Seger. I just find his post 1975 albums as a bit corny. But he’s clearly a gifted songwriter. We saw him live about…6 years ago. It was a good show. All those hits. But I wish he would embrace the early part of his career. ✌️

    I like his early stuff with the Bob Seger System and the Last Heard SO much better than the Silver Bullet Band. His music was tighter and edgier with three guys than it ever was with a virtual orchestra on stage! He was better as a minimalist

    • @the-vinyl-dreamscape5084
      @the-vinyl-dreamscape5084  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I totally agree. Would have been interesting to see him return to that style later in his career. I get the feeling that he genuinely doesn’t like the raw, minimal sound. Preferring the crafted studio shine. Thank you for watching. ✌️

Of course, I regret not buying the album ever since. But I likely would have sold it when the price started to rise. But it is certainly an interesting release. I wonder how Joel reacts to the Attila album today. Lol. That would be a good question for an interview. I love exploring those early albums and sometimes they are excellent. Thank you for watching. Bob Segar System lp are fantastic and overlooked by many people. The production and musicianship on Ramblin Gamblin Man and Noah are - well, you just have to hear it. I cannot speak of the cd versions. But please..everyone has to stop with the Proto superlative!

    • @the-vinyl-dreamscape5084
      @the-vinyl-dreamscape5084  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Lol. You’re probably right. I was kinda using the title as Clickbait to be honest. But I agree it’s grossly overused. Interesting you mention Noah - I’ve owned (and sold) several copies of that album because I struggle with it. There is an interesting story behind Noah but I can’t say it’s a great record. Maybe the gems of the early days were Back in 72 and Brand New Morning. Not really the style I love but I can’t deny that both are great. Cheers! Shawn

      @@the-vinyl-dreamscape5084 Funny how that all works. I dont get into Back in 72 or Brand New Morning. Thank you for not getting defensive about the proto comment. Its probably partly an age thing. I'm 57 and that term popped up way late in my record collecting love affair. At first it made sense and I didnt mind it, but it has become an overused and misused term on hype labels and reviews. In my opinion, the "proto" punk and "proto" metal band were punk and metal. but jsut before it had a name and a prescribed style. One thing that is certainly true about your title is that the greatness of ealr Bob Seger is basically a secret. Pleasure meeting you!

    Ramblin' Gamblin' Man is a TOP 60's radio single and HIS best that I've heard as well. Peaked early! I wouldn't describe it as garage rock which is my very favorite genre, so i'll check out some of the Heard stuff. Get Out Of Denver was a great track from Smokin' OP's! All that being said, I thought ALL his 80's stuff was great and well written except perhaps Hollywood Nights which got played to its DEATH on KMET L.A. radio!

    • @the-vinyl-dreamscape5084
      @the-vinyl-dreamscape5084  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@myyootube2 I would tend to agree, everything after the System wouldn’t be garage in the strictest sense. Its those early singles East Side Story, 2+2=?, Lucifer…but there are hints of the sounds up through 71/72. Back in 72 is just a good rock n roll album. We can just disagree on the rest. That’s cool. I don’t like his songwriting style. To dramatic with that big orchestrated sound. But that’s just my opinion. Thanks for your comment. Cheers! Shawn

    I always liked his 60s material so much better, I feel the same about all of the 70s arena rock stuff, they were always way better bands in the 60s!! Brian Jones era Stones, pre Tommy Who, Syd Barrett Floyd etc…

    Surprised to hear the Mongrel hype. I think it's probably his weakest of the pre-Silver Bullet albums, except maybe Smokin' OPs (which, I'll be honest, I'm kinda hostile to because it's all covers) or Seven. For my money though, Brand New Morning is the sleeper of the lot!

      I think either Brand New Morning or Back in 72 are his overall best- both very strong. I didn’t mention BNM because it’s not part of that early garage sound. Nevertheless, a damn fine album. Noah is the weakest of the bunch imo. I think Seger only sings two tracks on the entire album. The back story on Noah is interesting; Seger wanted to quit the music business and go back to college. So management hire another guy to sing. Lol. It’s a much sought after rarity. I found (and sold) Noah twice to finance other albums I wanted. But it’s an interesting listen given the background story.
