For non-short runs, every runner starts out with an extensive document of notes that contains all the details they need to know about the run. Over the course of hundreds and hundreds of hours, they start using the document less and less. Usually larger communities have a shared doc available online. Memory isn't a barrier to entry like a lot of people think.
