I had a similar experience about a year ago or so. I remember watching Tlozsr back in like 2012 and then run was nearly 6 hours and eventually just sort of shifted interests and didn't watch any SS for many years and recently came back and it's crazy it's so close to sub 2 at this point. This game has evolved so much since then
7 months late, but yeah. Gym's commentary is always incredibly good. He wastes very little time with jokes and memes, and always clearly and concisely explains the tricks and glitches he uses as they become relevant, often just in time for you to see them. He's gotta be my favorite speedrunner to watch for his expertise.
So sad I wasn't able to catch this live. You, Linkus, and ZFG are the holy trinity (triforce if you will) of Zelda speedrunners for me. Keep up the awesome work.
15:42-16:02 I always attributed the fact that Link can ride vents without the sailcloth is so he can use them in the Silent Realms (Specifically Eldin's Silent Realm). I don't know how the developers programmed the section, but it would appear that it takes all your items, including the sailcloth (I think?). Therefore, it would be impossible to go to the top of the mountain without it. Of course, it could also just be lazy programming, but I digress.
Just a standard dev sanity thing. If getting to an area requires the usage and/or ownership of a specific item, and it's intended to be impossible to get to that area _without_ using that item, then it's usually safe to assume that any player in that area has that item. Since none of the vents are intended to be accessible before you get the sailcloth, there's no reason to have the game specifically check for an item you're "guaranteed" to have by the time you encounter a vent.
@@MrOmegatronic It has been awhile since I posted that, but nothing wrong with that. I agree with you on most/all fronts. I do think that there is slightly more at play here, however, because the game does not draw the sailcloth when you go up a vent without having it in your inventory. That is why I brought up the Sacred Realms; since they take away your items, and vents exist in them, they needed to have Link be able to climb them without the sailcloth I.e. the “hold my hands above my head like I have the sailcloth propelling me up, sans sailcloth” animation. But this animation is not locked to Sacred Realms; it does the same thing when you climb the vent without a sailcloth in your inventory. That being said, yes, the vents are usable regardless, and your reasons are sufficient.
I see what you're getting at, @@Supperman88. That sounds like a good point, and probably explains why the game doesn't crash looking for an animation that isn't there, or something. (As compared to landing in an area, which is basically an interactive cutscene, and thus probably already has a specific pre-assigned animation, regardless of whether you have the sailcloth or not.)
Im honestly so mesmerized how they know exactly what things manipulate the game to their favor, what order they use them and how they even know of these glitches and manipulation shit. I get that they’ve been speedrunning a specific game for a long time but still its amazing
This is I believe the only speedrun I’ve ever gone back to rewatch in its entirety. Gymnast, you are fantastic to watch and listen to. I am astounded by how much info you can impart while playing, that seems like it should be incredibly difficult!
Dunno why everyone's so riled up by the Honks. Yea, they don't add much, but crowd engagement creates a more positive attitude and it helps with extra donations, and not just for the incentive itself. Look at Keizaron's Pokémon Gold run from last SGDQ, the Raikou nickname DIO?!?! got a couple of special donations and the crowd yelled it every single time it was sent out, nobody really complained back then. Gym's the only reason I got into Skyward Sword, love his positive attitude and the way he can explain stuff as complicated as everything BiT so everyone watching at least gets the basics of it, so this was another amazing treat for myself. PS: HONK! Edit: just noticed the title is wrong, you finished at 2:25:36, not 2:26 :)
Some people are just really sensitive about running gag, and other just loves to complain. I'm sure there's a lot of people among those who complain who themselve abuse their own private jokes without a consideration for others x). I don't get the honk meme at all, but yeah, like normal people should, I don't find it cringy or annoying to the point I blame them for it. Especially when it wasn't that often compared to some other recurring memes in event like this. The crowd was actually mostly respectfull on that matter to be honest, just honking as it shows up and trying to not make it too long. Gymnast and his couch were still able to perfecetly explain everything so.
