  • Here's a very nice, small, simple pancake lens for the Fuji system. A nice focal length lends it to usability and the maximum aperture of f/2.8 isn't too bad, either. Let's see if its popularity is deserved.

    Excellent review! It’s one of my favourite lens, full of character. Sharp, practical and inexpensive. The bokeh, even if not the melting kind, is subtle but really unique for this this lens. Shoot in f2.8 and you can always separate your subject, with a light but very distinguishable background blur. Stop it a little bit and you get super sharpness across the frame. Love the warmth of the colour rendition! Noisy, but I don’t mind. Also use it for video in tight places, with fixed or manual focus, with sound added on post! Love it.

    03:13 vs 03:26. One thing to note that I really like from this little winner lens is that the color consistency in the aparture range. In other words, with the 27mm, your picture will not have inconsistencies in color if you compare the wide open f2.8 shot with a stopped down f8 shot. Very consistent black tones at 03:13 vs 03:26. Unfortunatly, that's not true for some other FJ smaller lenses, like the 35mm f2 and 50mm f2 (and, to a smaller degree, the 23mm f2) which present a "bluer" cooler black rendition at f2 and a warmer neutral black at f8/f11. Go watch for yourself the other videos if you don't belive me. 27mm f2.8 ftw.

    I do wish Fuji would have provided an in camera option to allow this lens's control ring to be used for aperture control when it's in auto focus mode. But, they did give us a "Mk2" version with that included. I've still got this version and love it.

    Hello. Thank you for the informative and professional review. You mentioned this lens being the sharpest you have tested. Does that include the 35mm and 23mm f2 lenses? I was thinking of buying the 35mm, but I prefer the weight and size of this one and am happy with the focal length and 2.8 aperture. If this is smaller and sharper, in what areas does the the 35mm beat it (apart from being f2). Many thanks in advance :)

    Most Fuji lenses I've tried tend to not have very smooth bokeh. I usually don't mind as I think it looks more interesting, and feels a lot more like a vintage film lens, but as a general rule, if you want smooth backgrounds, you'd have to buy one of Fuji's crazy expensive professional lenses, which are also physically massive.
    Their main goal seems to generally lie more on sharpness of in focus elements, and overall price-to-performance, as well as keeping size and weight down while maintaining solid build quality.

    Hi, i use 27mm now and i feel that AF speed is too slow. And because I take a photo of my baby, I always lose the moment. I consider to change to 18mm (because I love pancake lens) is the 18mm lens has faster AF speed than 27mm? Is it better? Thanks

    • @manwhalejoe6962
      @manwhalejoe6962 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      (a) what camera body are you using? that may be affecting your AF speed
      (b) what version firmware is your camera using? if you are several iterations behind, you may be missing out significantly on faster AF just because of not updating
      (c) I would suggest you take a look at the 23mm f2 WR or the 35mm WR, as their autofocus is extremely fast, even on previous-generation fuji cameras like the XE2 and XT1. The 18mm is about as fast as this 27mm lens, or maybe even slower, and noisier with its AF noise.

    Which do you think would suffice pretty much most of your needs in the budget category of Fujinon lenses? I'd love to get the 23 pancake lens, the the XC version of the 35mm f2 is also pretty tempting. The same image quality and optics but half the price, and all you have to sacrifice is the metal body and weather resistance?! I think it is worth buy tbh 🤔. But I do however love the look of that 23mm. Both are almost the same price, with the 23mm a lil bit more expensive. Ughhh it's so had when you're broke Haha.

      I own such a lens myself. It is noisy enough to make it useless for video, unless you never change focus during the shots. It is also absurdly slow to focus compared even to kit lenses. Honestly, it only has 2 good things about it: 1) size 2) tiny front element makes it a hard to hit target when some dirt and water is flying around.

    I got this lens for 179euros from eglobalcentral so you can hardly say it is over priced, beside that awesome review 😜

    • @christopherfrost
      @christopherfrost  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's called a good deal. It doesn't mean that the lens's normal price isn't still expensive

    • @johan0234523
      @johan0234523 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually that is the regular price at eglobalcentral. Of course you get no warranty to speak of (but I was willing to take that risk for the price difference). It's a great lens on the X-E2 or even on the X-T1 (but less in balance).

    With the the 27mm, I cannot set the camera to Program mode nor shutter priority mode. It seems that with the 27mm (because no auto/manual aperture knob on lens) I have only 2 options: aperture priority by setting the shutter speed knob to Auto or manual by setting the shutter speed to one of the speed settings. Is there a way to get those modes with this lens?

    Nice review Chris, but I want to say that videomakers doesn't necessarily need an image stabilized lens because, if we want a smooth clip, we can use dollies, rigs and also sliders and steadycams. By the way very nice video, keep it up man :))

      What 150 Euro to 450 euro ? I am from Australia I bought this lens for $170 and then there is $100 cash back from Fuji making it $70. Extremely compact lens. It works well as a street photo lens and can also be used as a portrait lens

    I tried the lens out and then bought the 18mm f2 since not having the ability to change the fstop on the XT1 sucks compared to Nikon

    • @caleb-snaps
      @caleb-snaps 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can change the fstop, just it has to be with the on body dials instead of on the lens, like most other mirrorless cameras that don't feature an aperture ring.

    +Christopher Frost Photography : Hello Mr. Frost, how do you compare this with Canon ef-s 24mm f/2.8 STM pancake ?
    i am using the 24mm canon as my daily lens and it is crazy sharp and good for macro, smooth bokeh in my opinion. wide enough for an aps-c like eos m3 too.

      @@adityafabiohariawan3398 I like it so far. It's my "grab and go" lens now, it's small (perfect combo with my xt20) and the IQ is enough for me, it's sharp. But if you already have the main primes (like 35mm f2), they're sharper than the 27mm IMO, but for just walking around and family update I still grab the 27mm. I wish fuji make 2nd gen of pancake lens with 23mm focal length 😁

    I'm deciding among this one, Rokinon/Samyang 12mm f2.0, and Fujinon XF23mm f2. I love taking travel landscape photos (landscape photos with me and family in them), not street photography, and I do want sharper photos. Which one would you recommend I should get?
