How to Turn a Bottle Opener Handle | Woodturning

In this video, I will show you how to turn the handle for a bottle opener, using my wood lathe. It's a very simple wood turning project and makes for a very practical tool and gift. The wood is Canary wood from South America, an exotic hardwood. I bought the bottle opener kit made by Rockler. It comes with a threaded insert and a threaded bottle opener. I will also show you how I like to safely add burn marks to my turning projects.

Great video. I’m thinking of trying wood turning but haven’t pulled the trigger on a lathe. I don’t have much space so can you recommend a good bench top lathe. What tools do you recommend? Thanks

I really like my JET mini lathe. I'd recommend getting a variable speed motor You can probably find a beginner set of turning tools, but generally need a roughing gouge, spindle gouge, skew chisel, and parting tool. If you watch a few of my turning videos, you'll see me using a variety of other tools. Carbide chisels with interchangeable blades are also popular.

Would I be able to use string in place of the wire

I'd recommend sticking with the wire burners shown in the video. the wire holds up to the friction better and you want those little wooden knobs on the end. Don't ever wrap the wire around you fingers when doing this for safety reasons.
