    The boat it’s looking great brother. Nice work on the inlay. 1/4 masking tape and cut through the tape. Leaving 1/8 of tape on your fiber. Resins in just fine. Helpful tip for you. Nice work and looking forward to seeing your build.

    Very nice job Big B. I've glassed several boats in the past but never tried a carbon inlay. Watching this video gives me confidence to give it a shot. Not the first time you inspired me to go beyond my comfort zone. I picked up a used UL-19 on Offerup with no electronics, missing rear fins and a cracked front sposon for $100. I plan to fix the damage and give her a fresh paint job. I'll probably ditch the radio tray and install a carbon inlay as you did. Where do you by the carbon material from?

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  ปีที่แล้ว

      I got my CF from an eBay vendor, it's a thicker carbon fiber weave with resin & harder.
      www.ebay.com/itm/115173374556?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=h_VTjp8oTOS&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=yQkZS9FcQay&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY.
      Peter O mentioned going lighter weight cloth with 2 layers as opposed to a single layer of thicker cloth.
      The single CF layup added quite a bit of stiffness to the hull, without adding to much weight. Surprised the heck out of me

  • @hoodatdare7039
    @hoodatdare7039 ปีที่แล้ว

    LOOKS GREAT B. I DO HAVE AN IDEA. FOLD THE CARBON FIBER IN HALF LENGTH WISE, THEN PUT IT IN BY THE BOW THEN THE STERN AND THEN OPEN IT UP. YOU DID A GREAT JOB.

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the tip, I'll keep that in mind. I was extremely nervous about this installation, the edges of the carbon weave is delicate, to say the least.

  • @jonathandemaria1865
    @jonathandemaria1865 ปีที่แล้ว

    I used jb marine epoxy on that damn crease. Sanded smooth then glassed it and the nose in front of esc poured in some chop on the seams

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think jb weld is heavier than carbon fiber & epoxy, I could be wrong?

    • @jonathandemaria1865
      @jonathandemaria1865 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IRONCLADRC he'll yes its heavier. It's what I had available at the time,and I used just about 1 tube per side😆. I wish I used your method.

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Possibly, I'm up in the air between HD velcro or CF battery trays. HD velcro will allow larger batteries, But CF would look much cleaner. Hmmm. Decisions, decisions 🤔

  • @PhilBender612
    @PhilBender612 ปีที่แล้ว

    I can't believe you cut the beam out. lol For real tho, The factory beam looked nicely integrated into the hull, You must have a lot of confidence in that cf, where it wont allow the hull to twist. I guess we shall see. Great vid.

  • @peteroosterhoff8850
    @peteroosterhoff8850 ปีที่แล้ว

    Oh man... Got a lot off tips. But some off them i learned myself to get a nicer result. Put my boats upside down to measure cloth, but your way also worked fine. I put near edges low sticking tape on weave before cutting (but should be able to reach it later on). Put it on length and width (so it stays square). Then smear hull with resin, fold up cloth so it fits thru hatch and you can unfold it inside the hull. Then work from middle to outside with a small paint roller and a hooked flat brush for difficult places and small corners. The resin has to come thru the cloth, when not enough apply some. When tape gets soaked it will losing itself, if not you could use for instance a little bit of brake cleaner, or alcohol (witch evaporates quickly and has no influence on resin strenght). Thats how i learnt it myself to do it. This way the cloth is nice and straight in the hull. There is also non-shift carbon (haals a very small amount of dried resin so its "stiff"). I ordered it to try but for my build but isn't available in my or surrounding countries. Also the smaller weave patterns and lighter cloths work best in my experience so far. Rather do 2 thin layers then one thick. Hope this long reply makes sence to you...

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sir you made perfect sense thank you for the tips.
      Confirmation?
      So tape the edges of the carbon Fiber, then cut to size with the tape on the edges, install in the boat? Right? You're saying, once the resin wets the CF The tape will pull off the edges.... Jeez, wish I'd known that a couple days ago.😆 thanks a million

    • @peteroosterhoff8850
      @peteroosterhoff8850 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@IRONCLADRC depending on its shape/form, but like a mono, i put tape on long side were the cut is. So i can draw the line on it and cut it with special scissors. Real hull is always closest so there tape is at full width (tape is 1 inch wide btw). Front depends on how far you put it to the front. Another tip. When you rolled the middle off cloth, you can put temporarily thick transparant plastic in it. Then i can work "clean" in difficult corners without having everything under the resin.
      That's why i love your channel man. So we can learn from each other. And you respond to our viewers reactions to try things or give us tips. That's what the hobby is about.

    Great job man! Need to do this with some of mine, especially the ones that are being discontinued as a replacement hull won’t be available and of course the best looking ones imo, the ul and mg36 are going out to pasture I believe. Are u leaving the sponsons as they are or reinforcing them as well?

    • @IRONCLADRC
      @IRONCLADRC  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Personally I don't think they should discontinue either boat, both boats just need to be updated with newer electronics & factory-installed reinforcements. Perhaps a v2 type deal like the sonicwake v1-v2?

    • @VetteWay2Fast
      @VetteWay2Fast ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed, definitely bummed they are getting cut from the lineup. My guess is they were getting to many warranty claims with the mg36 hull and the esc/motor on the ul. You would think they would learn to “ironclad” their products a bit more and not put in electronics that are near their max to avoid the excessive heat issues. They got it right with the impulse putting in the firma 160 and I’m sure they aren’t having near the warranty claims with that boat as the ul. Sure prob a bit cheaper with the lower amp esc’s but that savings is surely negated or surpassed with the excessive warranty replacements. I guess all we can hope for is a newer version as u mentioned

    • @IRONCLADRC

  • @Abyssdiver
    @Abyssdiver ปีที่แล้ว

    It turned out great however here are some tips for next time. Lay the carbon on top of a plastic sheet (peel ply) then impregnate the carbon with epoxy resin first. After you get epoxy layer on top of the carbon add another layer of (peel ply) to the top. Now gently squeegee with a soft rubber tool the epoxy evenly into the weave and remove as much excess as possible. You draw your template onto the top peel ply and then use sharp scissors cut out the template this keeps all the edges together better. Now you use a paint brush to paint epoxy inside the hull just enough to make it glossy. Now remove the bottom peel ply and install inside the boat. Use the same tool to remove bubbles and make it stick evenly on all surfaces. Let it dry then remove the top layer of peel ply. This will give the high gloss perfect look you are after for the carbon or fiberglass.
    Cheers~
