- A four-hour standoff ended with a police sniper killing an armed man who hijacked a bus in Brazil Tuesday. Melissa Duggan with the dramatic scene as officials tried to save the 37 hostages on board.

The police made an attempt to reason with the hijacker, then when he refused to accept, they acted accordingly. If someone is putting the lives of innocents in danger, the safety of the hostages takes priority over the survival of the suspect.

Same thing happened here in my country a few years ago and the hijacked vehicle was a tourist bus to boot. Sad to say our rescue/de escalation attempt was an utter failure. Our national police and the local and national govt, by extension, embarrassed themselves live on national TV, not wearing the prescribed wear , fking up protocols during such emergency situations. The international community feasted on our incompetence, and the mother nation of the victims condemned us for it. Those were dark times.

But this is definitely not a happy situation nor ending, its not like they all went to disney world and ate ice cream, thats a happy ending.
Either he was crazy, or poor, or whatever, a society should work to avoid these problems happening in the future, so that the victims dont go through traumas like that, and that no one would have a reason to hijack a bus..

Some background story: many years ago a similar situation happened in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil). At the time the police failed to shoot the hijacker and he ended up killing innocent people.
This time the police had this experience in their pockets. They knew what to do better. Learning from experience and past failure.
