From a moral standpoint you dont just go and kill half of the population.. u either come up with another solution and keep looking for it forever and if you dont find it then you all die together.
Thanos could have easily killed the Avengers and half the population of the Universe, but he chose not too. He didn't want to kill unless it was absolutely necessary to reach his ultimate goal. He saw what the universe would become if left uncheck and all he wanted was to maintain balance in the universe, without having to cause suffering & death. Erasing half of the population existence, in the universe is better than mass genocide on a universal scale. I doubt that finite resources and overpopulation was the main reason the fueled Thanos's goal. Thanos has acquired mass knowledge of the Universe over the years and while knowledge is power, it is also a burden. Perhaps, he saw other bigger threats that would befall on the Universe, and by erasing half the population he saved the Universe from other super power entities or even perhaps erase that super power entity existence itself. I know the comics portrait Thanos as mad and wanted to kill half the Universe to please the goddess of death. But as there are infinite parallel Universe, there are also infinite theories. I suppose that, how we interpret Thanos's action is based on one's perspective.
I thought his home planet and people died off because they ran out of resources so they all ended up dying because no one had anything left. But what he didn't know is how the survivors would deal with the unexplainable loss of every one.

But if he would have wished for that he would be a very bad villain, because no one would want to avenge the REASONABLE titan.
Yeah but that's just one perspective of things. If erasing half of population throughout the universe would solve the problems that means Thanos would prove even tho hated by whole Universe, that he was right and thus Civilizations around the Universe would start to think about preventing same kind of problems for future which means hate him or not he would be victorious in Ideological perspective. And since Infinity Stones cannot really be destroyed, (unless you use one against other) If whole Universe would ignore the obvious reason of problems, then in 20-30 years as you said, someone would try to become Thanos 2.0 and another war would follow.
