    The script for this video is truly bizarre: Most (or maybe all) of the lines and tunnels have already been completed and operating for years, but the script is written as if the are “new”, “planned”, or “will be built.”

      Fair point. While most of the tunnels are already finished, I was trying to highlight the impact they will have on the future. Could have probably used some better wording though.

    • @thewaldfe9763
      @thewaldfe9763 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +23

      The point is that no matter how many tunnels Switzerland and Austria build - as long as countries like Germany keep failing to do their (much easier) part of rebuilding their train network on the lines in question due to failed infrastructure policies, that whole great idea of connecting Europe does not work.

      @JohnHausser I simplified for brevity. The major car importer and major owner of a fleet of trucks and relevant logistics are represented in parliament with the right-wing majority party.

    • @3komma141592653
      @3komma141592653 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I don't see how they undercut it. Reality is, that traffic growth is still there and the tunnels will operate at max capacity at some point. Means you have to block truck traffic all together to stay in line with the Alpine Protection Initiative. And that's rather unlikely to happen.

    • @thewaldfe9763
      @thewaldfe9763 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I see the main problem is not within Switzerland (and Austria), but in the countries around not doing their part in rebuilding their train network.
      Especially in Germany, massive corruption in the department of transportation (over decades) has led to subsidising the car industry instead of investing in the future of transportation.

    Good to mention as well that there will be a Zimmerberg Base Tunnel 2 which extends the current base tunnel to Baar, bypassing the old single-track Albis tunnel that is currently posing significant constrains with how many trains want to go through this stretch.
    It has recently been approved with construction set to start in 2029 with operation set to start with the December 2037 timetable change.

    Just a remark about stock footage. You're using stock footage/images of American trucks and trains, which look entirely different from those in Europe. It seems a little careless.
    Other than that, a good summary. I even learned something new today, which is even better. Good to hear that they're finishing the Lötschberg base tunnel; I had been wondering about that.

    Interestingly, they are currently building two new tunnels through Austria and parts of Italy to bypass the two Swiss base tunnels mentioned in this video. The Brenner Base Tunnel will connect Innsbruck with northern Italy and the Semmering Base Tunnel to bypass the curvy Semmering Railway Line. When complete by the early 2030's, there will be plenty of high-speed rail transport through the Alps.

    • @Braun30
      @Braun30 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      The concept is not to bypass but to integrate the offer.
      The big problem at the moment is the wish of rail companies to offer international lines that would cross Switzerland thanks to the existing lines.
      This could create chaos in what is possibly one of the most precise timetables in the world.
      Considering that trains leaving Milan, 45 km from Chiasso, never get to the border on time and that the same regularly happens with trains from Germany, the tight and highly regulated Swiss timetable goes up in the air.
      Let them go through Austria.

    The numbers in the tunnels don't make sense.
    The first tunnel allows
    260 freight & 65 passenger trains a day and all those trains need to go through the second tunnel which allows 170 freight 180 passenger a day.
    Thus unless loads of trains stop and unload at Camorino this actually lowers capacity through both tunnels to 170 freight and 65 passenger trains which makes no sense

    • @dgu8240
      @dgu8240 15 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

      yes exactly The first very long tunnel, the Gotthard base tunnel is only used for long distance passenger trains and cargo trains as it is very long and connects two different cantons within Switzerland. The second much shorter tunnel is only in one canton and is much more integral for the local passengers transport within this canton, thats why the passenger train frequency is much higher here and most of those trains stay on that side of the alps and never pass thru the Gotthard base tunnel, also the line diverts into multiple lines before the ceneri base tunnel, going along lago maggiore for example. thats why many cargo trains take other routs, including the old one over the mountains wich only takes around 15-20 min longer.

      @zhdowntown 13 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      at first glance you are right. The high-speed line from Florence to Bologna is a masterpiece and I am a huge fan of Italian high-speed trains. What is often forgotten, however, is that the Gotthard Tunnel is the deepest tunnel in the world. This structure is subject to enormous forces and the temperatures in the tunnel are always around 50 degrees Celsius due to the depth. this meant that the following problem had to be solved: in winter a passenger train leaves the tunnel at 200 km/h to 250 km/h with an outside temperature of 50 degrees Celsius (despite the supply of cold fresh air) and within seconds the outside temperature can be 60 degrees colder. This is the definitive acid test for any train manufacturer. We remember a slightly colder winter than normal and the Eurostar trains did not cope with the far smaller temperature differences and broke down in droves.

    Grammar Feedback: The possessive case suggested by using an apostrophe for 1980’s (and 1990’s) is incorrect. There is no ownership, nor is this a contraction. These are instances of plurality. The 1980s refers to the ten years of that decade. It’s much more efficient than saying 1980, 1981, 1982, etc. Those of us who work in education would really appreciate it if you would stop making this error. We would prefer not to have to “unteach” this error to our students who watch your videos. 😊

    Aren't most of the tunnels completed? Happy to contribute as Swiss tax payer to this, yet, why are there still soooo many trucks! I think an important part of the solution is that we all finally start reducing our levels of material consumption - do we really need to buy more new stuff all the time, I'd say if we all moved a bit more towards minimalism, grow our own gardens and set up repair cafés rather than replacing almost perfectly fine things, we could massively reduce the numbers or trucks and goods that need to be chauffeured around. Any other ideas how we can impact the situation with our choices and actions?

    Out of curiosity:
    What's wrong with the high altitude tracks btw from 1882, too steep, too old or take much longer? If so how much longer? Or less capacity? But the tunnel south of Gotthard can only transport 170 freight trains which is even LESS than the previous line from 1882 - is that right? I don'z quite get the argumentation :)
