I made these today for my grandchildren and they loved them, baked not fried, I will make them again. I grew up with the raisins, olives, potatoes, boiled egg and olives in my pastelitos and fried (delish) also.
Turned out amazing, simmering the meat for 30 minutes was such a good tip! I have always struggled with making tender ground beef but this turned out incredible and soft.
Love this recipe. It's funny that you mentioned raisins. Growing up my mom had to make a few separate empanadas for me because I hated raisins. Now I can't make them without raisins. I guess it's a sweet/salty thing.
I 100% know how you feel. I actually don't like them with raisins, however, anytime I see them it brings back good memories. My grandmother always made them with raisins. It reminds me so much of her!

Hola chef zee, I miss you where you been for So long?? I always looking forward for your great recipes... I think you are one of the best chef on tv...
Momi I’m definitely going to make this. I made my husband your Peruvian Chicken and he loves it. My Mother and Father in-law do too! We are from DC originally and DC has a lot of different food. Now we live in Fort Lauderdale so not so much. Gracias! 💜💖💜
The water tenderizing tip is a great one that I will be using frequently!! I don't like that rubbery texture, either, but never knew how to avoid it. Thanks, Zee!
You are so welcome! When I first introduced that tip in earlier video, I got so much heat for it!!! But trust the process. Thank you so much for watching!

Will make your dish taste great 👍. You have a new subscriber. Keep up the great work 💪. I can't wait to see more videos.. GOD Bless you..

Thank you!!! The pots are from Le Creuset . I've linked them and ones just like them in my Amazon store and in the description. Target also sells ones that are very similar and beautiful. Be on the lookout for Home Goods as well. They usually carry cast iron pots (like the ones I used in the video) during this time of year! I hope this helps!
I buy the discos but i prefer the small ones my hubby likes big ones..Everything else i make from scratch ( my own sofrito/ recaito blend ) i know its not traditional but i add potatoes, cheese and sometimes a spoon of arroz con gandules. Lol) i make the arroz con gandules as a side but one day put it in with filling omg its literally the perfect bite..tfs

Thank you!!! I actually used both to show that they both come out great. I personally prefer with butter but still do it with oil since sometimes its cheaper and quicker. I find that the butter ones have a slight pastry texture vs. the oil
🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽you helping me to learn how to cook my Dominican dishes fit my husband, can you please do a video non Dominican rice, I have done it perfectly but lately it is taking longer to cook, and I want to perfect it, because my husband has been mad at me for not doing it right! Please help chef Zee🙏🙏🙏
@@jaycarr1790 Wether it’s jasmine, white or basmati, it doesn’t matter but my husband taught me that Dominicans cook their rice differently by thoroughly washing all starch from rice, then heat pot as put some oil in pot until hot and then Two tablespoons of salt to melt in with oil, then after sauté rice and then add water, same amount r a little more to pot then let it simmer then five mins later stir rice, cover with plastic bag then cover it pot, and let it simmer until rice is seperate and soft
I actually have a video here on my channel how to make the perfect white rice. Just know that you can use this method to make a variety of different rices. However, making rice is honestly an exercise in getting to know your stove. Knowing your stove will let you know if you need to adjust the water-to-rice ratio. I always recommend starting with a 1-to-1 ratio and then adjusting it from there depending on your stove and how you like you're rice. I hope this. Here's the link to my white rice video: th-cam.com/video/RoTdQc6GL3M/w-d-xo.html
Can I freeze or refrigerate these a night before frying? I would love to make these for Thanksgiving but wouldn't wanna do too much the day of Thanksgiving
Haha no worries. You can definitely place them in the fridge if you're preparing them the night before. I recommend freezing it if you make it more than 2 days in advance
This is a tricky question because it depends on how thin I roll them out and how much I can stretch the scraps to make new empanadas. However, I would say that they roughly make about 40-50.
I use the leanest that I can find which these days is 85/15 blend and I drain the excess oil after it's done cooking so that the empanadas don't come out oily.
Ever since a baby I’ve heard my mom call them pastelitos... my mom is from DR so I’m confused why now it has two names. Empanadas were referred to the ones made out of yuca. It’s sad how we change names to traditionally known food😱😱😱
Same here. I had to start calling them by both since half of the people on the Internet didn't know what I was referring to when I said pastelitos. I think it's a regional thing.
Oh wow I love empanadas, yours look so delicious!! Thanks for sharing 💞🥰❤️ Come by and say hello if you get a chance, we'd love to share our latest 😊❤️
What do you do with what you trim off? Throwing it out is wasteful. If you use water to seal can you still reuse the scraps??? No one tells you what to do with the extra. Like egg wash! Do you throw it out? then use something else that won’t be a waste .
@@Chefzeecooks i used to buy it by this old place off 181st Manhattan and they put them in it I spit it out on the floor and threw it out cursed them out and left. It’s a sin against Hispanic ‘antojitos’

Hi! What do you use for your empanada dough? Goya disc or something different?
I make my dough from scratch using flour, water, salt, butter, and eggs. There’s a recipe here on my channel!
@@Chefzeecooks Thank you for replying! I will have to check it out!!!
I usually use mojo to tenderize the meat. It adds extra flavor.
My father in law makes the small ones when he has a catering order for a party..I prefer it that way
Can you bake them? If so, at what temp and how long? I made the dough from your 2 way recipe
What type of oil did you use for frying? I usually use vegetable oil
Which empanada dough did you use in this recipe? The one with butter or oil?
Are these a main dish or do you make them with something? Wife of a Dominican here and have learned so much from you. Thank you.
These types of meat pie dishes are used as a snack or on the go type lunch.
