I know many believe this song to be literal, which still sends such a powerful message (as all SAL songs do), but am I the only one who believes there’s something deeper going on here? Something more mental, as if that ‘glass house’ is his stability, his calm, his mind, and what he’s putting out of his mind is all the bad, the earthquake and the avalanche.

What I like about their songs, is that you can interpreted in many different ways. I can tell you something hysterical about it, fictional, religious, mental and realistic (I mean, about what's happening today) so, yes

Research the gods associated with with names of these songs... and the alchemical applications of these metals as well. They are singing us the truth... what do you think glass house means it’s the dome firmament. We are being shown the way home by our music, literature, religion, but we must move past the cloak(literal interpretation) and see what the cloak hides. The truth is “For those with the eyes to see, and the ears to hear”

I love this artist. He manages to capture all the thoughts we try and push to the back of our minds and collects them into a beautiful, heartbreaking song that inspires and enlightens us about our ways and to never let us forget them. But even with such a scary subject he is bringing to matter, he mentions a solution, or a rebirth that is quite possible in such a scary and real situation. The purity and serenity of this song brings me chills every time I listen and take in the deep lyrics. It is so very beautiful and I love it

Sleeping At Last is the group whose songs are like the soundtrack to my life. As the main character, I would never hear the songs played at the 'appropriate' moments. But I listen to them before and after, so that when the time comes, they reveal themselves in my mind and I can almost hear them as if in a movie.

  • @gabriellacoppolecchia5388

My interpretation: this song is about a man that digs into the ground and finds something precious like a mineral or petrol. He knows that it can be used for many things but also that it's limited and it's not sustainable. Nevertheless he sells it knowing that this will bring doom and hoping to keep it a secret. So he builds his family a house, a house the made of glass. it offers a barrier that keeps reality out. The reality of a world whose screams echo in the air. And while outside the result of this man's actions are wildfires, avalanches and hurricanes his family is oblivious and sheltered. His house though, because is made of glass, could crumble at any moment. So we are all doomed, cut out from our life line. On the brink of destruction. But until that happens we think we are safe...

  • @promethanol4162
    @promethanol4162 6 ปีที่แล้ว +80

Ive seen several people commenting what they interpret the song as, so here’s my version
Also, I left a few things out because I feel they would be self explanatory and easy to understand
“Dig till my shovel tells a secret”
The artist getting to know a person. He learns their secrets in the process.
“Swear to the earth that I will keep it”
Promising that he’ll keep this persons secrets, with the “earth” being that person.
“Let my change of heart occur”
Knowing the person better now, they’re feelings start to change
    “Sold soon after the appraisal”
They are now sold on the fact that this person is different than previously thought, and that they like them
“The hammer struck the auction table louder than anything I’ve ever heard”
This somewhat goes along with the last one, the writer making a clear decision at this point and starting a relationship with the person they got to know.
“Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house.”
Despite having gotten to know the person and liking them, the relationship is unstable and threatening to collapse
“But I put it out of my mind long enough to call it courage”
This one is kinda self explanatory. They’re trying to ignore the fact that the relationship is unstable.
    “To live without a lifeline”
The one they started a relationship with stopped helping and/or supporting the artist
“I bend the definition of faith to exonerate my blind eye”
They are trying to call what they are doing “faith” so as to ignore and redeem the fact that they were ignorant
“Till the sirens sound I’m safe”
Until things starts to get really bad, they think they are safe
    “My family’s taking shelter”
Their family is starting to shut away the person that the artist is in a relationship with
“A countdown begins until the dynamite gives in”
It’s only a matter of time now before things get really bad
The echo as wide as the equator travels through a world of build up anger”
The world of built of anger is the toxic relationship, and the echo is a reminder of how things used to be, happy and alright.
“There was an earthquake, there was an avalanche of change”
Because of the “echo” they both realized how bad things had become. Because of this things began to change drastically.
“The wildfires grow and grow, till a brand new world takes shape”
In this line, the wildfires(which don’t necessarily signify anger and hate, but getting rid of the old and replacing it with the new) are starting to spread, causing the relationship to transform into something better

I love sleeping at last, they have a unique way of using words, and songs with good meanings to it. There are some songs that have good meaning, but they give the meaning in the form of soft melodic instrumental and metaphors and such. The first song I've ever heard from them is Saturn, I love every song they've made. All the elements of music they used is all forged together to create this masterpiece of song. You can actually feel the emotion in their songs. I can't remember a time when a song actually took me back and made me remember memories and actually made me emotional, weather it was a good emotional or bad... Their songs make me laugh, cry, remember, go back in time, I just love their music so much. They are a unique group. I could listen to their music on repeat for years at a time and never get tired of the message. The world needs more musicians like this.

this song begins with the singer digging until the earth decides to provide him with "a secret", upon which the singer promises to keep it and promptly sells it, knowing full well what'll happen next and feeling guilty about it (though not enough to stop the secret from being auctioned off, supported by "louder than anything i've ever heard"). in the line "exonerate my blind eye", along with "but i put it out of my mind" from the chorus for this first part both imply that the singer knew of the disasters that would follow after he sold the secret but deliberately chose not to think about it.
the second part is how the auctioneers/whoever he sold the secret to continue "digging" for more of that secret, blasting the earth with dynamite. "fire down the wire/til the dynamite gives in". this once again angers the earth, and it's the straw that breaks the camel's back. "a world of built up anger" - representing all the previous things humanity has done to it. "too late to pull itself together now" is the song of fury the shattered earth screams at humanity for this and everything else, finally breaking apart.
the third part is this final disaster - the earth, having finally been pushed to the breaking point, ripping humanity apart for good. all the lines in this part correspond to or mention natural disasters - wildfires, floods, hurricanes, avalanches. it especially focuses on change - "an avalanche of change" terrifying the humans. the humans bring themselves together in the face of this fury, "folded our hands and prayed" that it would end.
note that the song does not make clear whether or not the change is good or bad - it's just change, and that scares people. because of the human point of view of the song, the change is made out to be terrifying and emotional, but i'd like to believe it was for the better for the earth and ultimately humanity as a whole.
finally, the chorus is just a space in between - a memorial to the way humanity lied to itself, put the myriad warning signs out of their minds and bent faith to form a shield between their glass house and the destruction they had wrought. trying to protect this fragile thing from everything they'd done to the earth.

it's not really related to this song, but it's about a schizophrenic guy who thinks the secret to life houses in his head and another guy who was a rape victim and was traumatized by that. they end up in the same mental institute and fall in love. it's a fanfiction though, so the two guys are real people used for the story, which not everyone likes. the line from this song just reminds me of it because there's one scene where the schizophrenic is talking with someone who claims to be able to read someones future from their hand, and tells him he shouldn't even be alive because he doesn't have a lifeline (one of the lines on the palm of your hand)

In the story I'm currently reading, there is something called the Calling. It's when one's heart calls out to the other, meaning that they are basically made for each other. The main character has currently is under a ton of stress because of things that her closest friends have found out about her and her three brothers. They had confronted her elder brother, hurting both of them deeply, and that group is now allowed no where near the family. Problem is, one of the people in that group is her One, she just doesn't know it yet. I was listening to this song as he took all of his rage out in a holographic battle training, watching as he tore through it as he remembered the things she had said to him after he had tried to apologize. He began heavily chastising himself, remembering words she had said. This song heavily impacted the scene as I watched the usually laid back man tear through the holoforms in complete unbridled rage.

The imagery of a glass house built over fault lines is so powerful. Because all it takes is for those fault lines to move too much and that earthquake will shatter that glass house.

  • @wolfwriter1888
    @wolfwriter1888 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think that sections about the glass house is simply man’s reputation and how little it takes for it to crumble, this man chose to stay in his glass house while nature, or rumors was set to destroy it; unlike him, his family left their reputations and lies to take shelter in peace and comfort.
My other thought about this has similar aspects, the glass house being a reputation. Pride.
Except I’ll go more in depth to it.
Like some other commenters, perhaps it is about oil or gems or something of the Earth that they’d promised to save, to keep secret, but instead sold it very very quickly.
People have been putting off global warming for some while now. ‘But I put it out of my mind long enough to call it courage..’ Meaning, they did put it out of their mind because it was just another problem and they didn’t want to accept it, but deep down they were afraid. I think this is Mother Nature making a comeback and letting the effects domino (like in the song). Once natural disasters begin to occur so frequently, Homo sapiens began to realize that they had done this to themselves and many many other species.
    They cried themselves a hurricane.
They had enough tears and remorse and regret to do so, but I think that was more of a metaphor.
    Floods.
    Tidal Waves.
    Earthquakes.
Avalanche (obviously the lifestyle for everyone is going to change).
    Wildfires.
    Hurricane.
    Dynamite.
They prayed to many, whoever came to mind to save them, to save Earth, and for forgiveness of they wrongs that brought this disastrous, unprecedented world.
But I don’t think anyone came.

  • @leigh_meier13
    @leigh_meier13 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I'm sitting here thinking about how incredibly well these lyrics relate to the world right now.
    "There was an earthquake,
There was an avalanche of change.
    We were so afraid,
    We cried ourselves a hurricane."
But it's good to see people helping others. Even if contact isn't possible, life finds a way to go on.

  • @lynxhart101
    @lynxhart101 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

Just because I can't stay away from this song, I felt the need to show my own interpretation of it.
It reads, to me, as a person who's turned their back on God, or faith in general. The imagery of digging, of being "sold soon after the appraisal": they read like he's burying faith, trying to forget about it; that he's sold himself off to the Devil or the faithless. The song is titled Earth because there's so much imagery about the power of the Earth in it.
The "fault lines tremble underneath" his "glass house" - the house without foundation, the transparent house that everyone can look in and tell isn't safe, but he convinces himself is by putting "it out of my mind long enough to call it 'courage' to live without a lifeline". He glorifies faithlessness by saying it's courage, that by living by his own power alone he's somehow being brave. In reality, the house could collapse in on him at any moment, but he turns a "blind eye" and "bends the definition of faith" to fit him situation, so he doesn't have to change.
Thus comes the thesis of the song: "til the sirens sound, I'm safe".
As long as he turns at the last second; as long as he makes it right before the door closes; he's safe. He can live and be as he likes. But emergencies don't come with warning. They strike without reason. And even WITH the warnings - with the trembling faultlines, and the echoes - he still ignores them, waiting for the fated "sirens" that have already come and he refuses to listen.
I can't quite put it into the words I'd like, but this song makes my soul shake every time I listen.

I dig till my shovel tells a secret
Swear to the earth that I will keep it
    Brush off the dirt
And let my change of heart occur
    Sold soon after the appraisal
The hammer struck the auction table
Louder than anything I've ever heard
Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house
But I put it out of my mind
Long enough to call it courage
    To live without a lifeline
    I bend the definition
Of faith to exonerate my blind eye
Till the sirens sound, I'm safe
    Meanwhile, my family's taking shelter
The sparks send the fire down the wire
    A countdown begins
    Until the dynamite gives in
The echo, as wide as the equator
Travels through a world of built up anger
Too late to pull itself together now
Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house
But I put it out of my mind
Long enough to call it courage
    To live without a lifeline
    I bend the definition
Of faith to exonerate my blind eye
Till the sirens sound, I'm safe
    There was an earthquake
There was an avalanche of change
    We were so afraid
    We cried ourselves a hurricane
    There were floods
    Tidal waves over us
So we folded our hands and prayed
    Like a domino
    These wildfires grow and grow
Until a brand new world takes shape
Fault lines tremble underneath my glass house
But I put it out of my mind
Long enough to call it courage
    To live without a lifeline
    I bend the definition
Of faith to exonerate my blind eye
Till the sirens sound, I'm safe
Until the sirens sound, I'm safe
Until the sirens sound, I'm safe

Personally this song means a lot to me. Im not gonna cry woe is me.. But I've had it rough, and I wouldn't give in to my emotions, because i thought it was weak. When in reality fighting how i felt was hurting me more. I was becoming bitter. Unsympathetic. Etc. Etc. But then i found my "soul mate" (i know, what a queer term).. Anyways so i fell in love and i had to learn to be open. Because you cant have a boyfriend and be angry all the time and expect him to just be cool with it. (Mind you im a very angry 19 year old girl, i know thats young to be bitter but when you struggle all your life... Ya know. Again not crying woe is me) so basically this song to me is about being "strong" all your life and finally breaking under all that emotion. Idk just me.
