I’ve had cats I’ve never met before at the shelter where I used to volunteer reach through cages to bat at my hands if they were kittens or hang out by my feet or sit on my lap as adults. I even had one lick me like a dog. Of course there were skittish cats too, but you can’t win em all.

    Another piece of advice is to look away from the cat while you offer a finger or hand. It also helps to get on the cat's level. Sitting down, looking away, and letting the cat smell you says to the cat that you're not going to hurt it.

    • @cleigh3796
      @cleigh3796 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      Absolutely. And if a cat is looking at you and squinting, or looking away, that is a good sign. If it's a cat you just met, it may be interested in you, but it likely doesn't trust you very much so it's literally keeping its eyes on you.
      You can also look at it for a second and slowly blink, then look away. I think this shows it that you trust it.
      Respecting a cat's boundaries and the fact that it may be afraid of you at first can improve your chances of petting one, but ultimately it's up to the cat if it wants to interact with you or not. Please respect their boundaries. Unless you need to get them in the carrier to take them to the vet. Then you may need to wrangle them =/

    I usually sit somewhere on the floor and don't do any rapid movements, and calmly call the cat by it's name until it becomes interested. And then let it sniff me. Usually after that it either goes away or lets me pet it.

    • @pillowmachete7867
      @pillowmachete7867 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      I know this is probably obvious info, but just in case, for anyone else reading this, if the cat sniffs you and then leaves instead of asking/going in for pets or affection, this does not mean they don't like you or anything.
      A cat sniffing you and then going off to do something else is like waving hello to us. Think of it as progress in the way that they know you better now, so the next time that they do approach you, you'll be meeting with a cat you've bonded with more than before.

    the easiest way to avoid cat's defensive reflexes is to just point with 3 fingers at the same time while they're curled down
    1. it's showing that you want to approach it
    2. it's showing that you're actively sheathing your nails
    3. you're showing that by extending your hand you're extending it beyond your own attacking range
    4. you're giving it more surface to sniff than just a finger

    What I've always done was to get on their level looking eye to eye and gently stick my hand or finger out to sniff. I also mimic their cat churp/purr noise and im sure they appreciate it very much. Cats love being around me when i do that.

  • @SmilingRain
    @SmilingRain 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    I use to present the backside of my fingers with a relaxed hand. Works with almost every cat.
    With cats who fear strangers sitting down and relax, talk to their parent and look slowly and casually in their direction then and now (no stare) and just wait, made the trick for me.
    There is one very anxious cat. She didn't come to me until I have visited a couple of times. And than at last it almost magically happened.
    I guess with cats it's basically trust.

    I clunched together my thumb, index and middle finger and slowly approach them while lowering my body. I usually call them softly and see if they interested. If they're curious they would get near and let me pet them. getting the strays trust is the best feeling ever. just like when you get the attention and trust of a baby that hard to please.

      Do you have experience with strays? Cuz I've been feeding one for years now she practically live at our property. So she is mine. But she has always been shy. I've been feeding her for a year before she let me pat her. And I would like to get her to a veterinarian in order to sterilize. But I have no idea how to get her into the carrier box. She doesn't let me hold her. Whenever I try to lift her she turns out of it. She is not biting or anything. Just turns out of it. If you or anyone has any tip feel free to share.

    • @siiverfoxes1138
      @siiverfoxes1138 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@ildikobalogh5662 i'm not sure it is right to do that, especially since she isn't comfortable with being carried. i believe she is friendly and trusts you very much, but i think putting her in a carrier box won't be good for her. it might make her anxious. especially since it is an enclosed space, stray cats are wild and free, so i doubt she would appreciate being placed in one. taking her to a vet may not be the best idea either, even if you have good intentions. it is an unknown place too, she might feel stressed.
      stray cats are accustomed to living life on the streets. they can easily take care of their needs, and i'm assuming this cat can too, unless she is a bit dependent on you now.
      however, if you are keen on taking her under your wing and ready to accept the responsibilities (which i'm sure you are), you can try getting her into the carrier with the help of treats. don't force, it will be bad for her. it may take some time. cats have different personalities, and as your friend is shy and timid, you will have to be patient and gentle. i think it won't be too difficult for you though, as the cat seems to trust you.

      @@kikikiki8381 They run away and don't let you get close to them. You won't ever get close to their nose if they are not cool with you.

    • @kaiTakateru
      @kaiTakateru 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@ildikobalogh5662 I think you're almost there. How about increasing your skinship with her whenever you see her. Just a light pet or scritch on the forehead will do. They also like it when you rub their chin and their cheek too. Then you can move on to petting her whole head and her whole back (avoid the stomach area). And when you think youre close with her enough and let you hold her , prepare some beddings and put it inside the carrier box . A soft towel or blanket that doesnt smell too strong will do, and put some bowl and food inside too. Good luck!
      Usually when i see a friendly cat i did exactly what the OP does. I extend my finger slowly near their face . If they're interested and let me get close i can usually "scritch" their forehead. Then i move on to pet their head entirely , then their back. When they like you enough they usually rub their entire body around you and to me that's a sign that you can pick them up. Though not every cat will let you hold them.
