I remember being little and my grandfather teaching me how to "introduce myself" to their cats, with our index fingers. And now I'm crying lol. Thank you for reminding me of this beautiful memory, I miss him very much!!!
I recommend touching something metal or wetting your finger first to make sure you don’t accidentally shock the kitty. This has happened to me and I felt so bad. It took a while to reestablish trust.
My cat's name is Popcorn and she is 10 years old. But, for some reason, she always smells my hand whenever I come inside the house. I think if might be her way of greeting me. But, it's so weird.
You can also meow back at then to make them more comfortable with you. I had to do this recently when a neighbor's cat got out and wouldn't go back inside. She was a sweetheart, very soft and snuggly!
Didnt know this either but I noticed cats like it when you let them greet you by letting them come close to your face. Combined with the knowledge of "slow blinking is a sign of cats trusting you" and I can make almost every cat my friend ☺️
the easiest way to avoid cat's defensive reflexes is to just point with 3 fingers at the same time while they're curled down 1. it's showing that you want to approach it 2. it's showing that you're actively sheathing your nails 3. you're showing that by extending your hand you're extending it beyond your own attacking range 4. you're giving it more surface to sniff than just a finger
I call the finger to nose thing "the hoop". I do this all the times to greet my cats, however they are very used to me either being up higher or occasionally down under where they are, so they know that I'm not being threatening, just greeting them
What I've always done was to get on their level looking eye to eye and gently stick my hand or finger out to sniff. I also mimic their cat churp/purr noise and im sure they appreciate it very much. Cats love being around me when i do that.
Th music / noise in this video is both amusing and weird at the same time. It is both compelling yet somewhat repulsive at the same time. But these sounds will stick in my mind forever. LOL !!!!!
I’ve learned to do this intuitively, sometimes you get rejected but most of the time you don’t. You can only offer yourself to a cat and hope they accept you.
Thank you for the downwards tip, I was unaware of it and didn't understand why suddenly my cat was attacking in the middle of petting it while I was sitting and it was on the floor...
I found a stray cat at my mall and i just sat down in front and it came running towards me. I tried petting it and it surprisingly worked. However sometimes when i tried petting its head, it was "biting" me. It wasnt painful tho. When i went to get it food it was rubbing its body against my leg 😢 i fed it the food but idk how to pet it properly cuz if i put my hand near its head it tries to kind of bite me
1. You can use your first knuckle instead of your fingertip. Jackson Galaxy calls this the "Michelangelo". 2. Cats can freak out if you're standing or otherwise towering over them. To minimize this, sit down at their level or approach them when they're in a cat tree. 3. A traumatized, mentally imbalanced, or scared cat won't let you get close at all. You can offer them a scent article like your eyeglasses before offering up your fingertips. Some cats will freak out at this, so be respectful! 3a. If the trauma runs pretty deep, you'll need to build a positive association with human touch. If they got a delicious treat every time you visit their territory, eventually they will learn that you're not a threat, you are Santa Claus. 4. Some cats will respond much more positively if you ignore them.
I don't use the finger trick but the held out hand but it generally works every time even to stranger cats. Many around my neighborhood are always very enthusiastic about being friendly after an introduction.
Even though i was very careful while trying to befriend this cat in our school ... that creature literally scratched me and I ended up in nurse's office 😢
Not bad. Imo, the rules are. 1. Be chill, watch the cat and give them time and space. If they aren't interested at all you will know. 2. I like to present my full hand with the fingers curled down. If you just use one finger it's too easy to jab, and cats don't like that. 3. And I'm kind of reiterating my previous point, I don't stuff it in their face. I get as close as they are comfortable, sometimes I will squat down, and put my hand near but not right next to their face. If they are comfortable they will take some initiative.
Step 1: Make your presence known
Step 2: Gently boop kitty's nose
Step 3: You and kitty are friends now
I always boob my cat

How is that?? I don't understand :/

This actually makes sense! Imagine if a stranger came up and hugged you. You’d be like “…sir wtf.”
Yeah people that understand boundaries tend to do ok with cats

Didnt know this but ive been doing it for a long time coincidentally, just found it to be the most approcahable way.

this is exactly how i vibecheck my cat to see her if she's okay with hugs and petting or if she just want some alone time lmao
ME TOO sometimes she sniffs my hand and pushes her head towards it so I can pet her LOL ❤❤❤
“Booping the snoot is an effective cat-befriending strategy.” 🤣
I love cats 💞💞😻💞
Instructions unclear. Cat's been grooming my hair for over 30 minutes
Sounds to me like the instructions were perfectly on point then!
I tried this and it actually works, I just don't have a finger anymore.
😂
it works!. that's all matter! :)

The background sound:😂😂😂😂
Kinda similar with dogs. They like to smell your hand. It helps if you get down to their level

I love cats
‘The cat you are interested in.’ 😂❤
Hey man thank you so much now my little diva is now happy!
wow. i always do that but i didnt know that it was the correct way to aproach. i just find funny how they look.
Fun fact, this also works with dogs. Always let a dog or cat sniff your hand the first time you see them, and wait for them to move before you do
For dogs, I would present a clenched fist 🤛 rather than a finger 👈 in case they are bitey
I always just put my hand out near them and usually they'll sniff for a second then nuzzle in, it's so cute
It’s like back in the day when you paired two technical devices with each other by gently bumping them together.
The instructions were unclear; now, the cat has become my master
This is what Jackson Galaxy calls "the finger nose."
My aunt's orange cat is so chill he lets me pet him when he doesn't even know me💀

* goes outside to befriend every street cat i see *
I needed that advice because an injured stray came to my house
Slow blinking at the cat helps too.
I always hold out my hand, a few inches away to let them walk away or come close, they always warm up to me and it's so cute 💗
my cat walks up to me and boops my nose all the time
it is SO CUTE
Usually I just extend a knuckle to imitate a cat nose.
When dealing with cats, two fingers is Pro level 🤔🤨🧐
Th music / noise in this video is both amusing and weird at the same time. It is both compelling yet somewhat repulsive at the same time. But these sounds will stick in my mind forever. LOL !!!!!
It's important to that with dogs too. They're less likely to be afraid of you if you let them sniff your hand first.
My dad taught me to offer animals the back of my hand so they can smell me, and not feel threatened.
honestly this is a big indicator if someones a cat person...understanding mannerisms of the cat gets you respect asap
We not in mood ignore each other. We both in mood play or cuddle. I boop the nose and it lick my finger.

me trying to poke cat nose

I usually use the kneel down and present back of hand method. Works most the time, maybe I'll try this one next
If you gently slide your tongue into your cat's mouth and down its throat you will help the bonding process.
I don't use the finger trick but the held out hand but it generally works every time even to stranger cats. Many around my neighborhood are always very enthusiastic about being friendly after an introduction.
My cat: scratches my finger
“By sniffing each others scents through their noses”
They can also view each other through their eyes. Or maybe listen to each other with their ears
Also often let the cat come by itself the last distance, see if the cat is interested.
My cats always sniff my nose when i go home every few months
Thanks for sharing such useful information
I usually squat down and hold my hand halfway out, showing the kitty my palm. That works for me.
Even though i was very careful while trying to befriend this cat in our school ... that creature literally scratched me and I ended up in nurse's office 😢
The important use of one finger: No.1 Introduce yourself to a cat , No.2 Other stuff
I always do that when I meet a cat
Step 1: make your presence know
Step 2: gently boop Kitty's nose
Step 3: angry kitty bites your finger
😂😂😂
I hold my hand out like I’m a kid in Africa trying to get water but with one hand and talk in cat/human language and that usually works
My cat be like: licks
Same as how you communicate with ET …
Not bad.

I've personally never had to do this, cats tend to come to me for pets naturally for some reason.
Cats: let me sniff your nose so I know it's you
Dogs: lemme sniff your butt so I know it's you
Love 'em both
