Your apartment is lovely, you’re doing such a great job adulting!
Couple of organizational things I thought of while watching - you could get shelves/dividers/boxes to put inside your kitchen cupboards to utilize the horizontal space as they’re actually quite spacious but you’re only using the bottom bit. Muji has great items for organizing and can be affordable! In your room too, I think if you’re able to stack things upwards like you did with your fridge, microwave, toaster you’ll be able to have things more out of the way and organized and even gain on floor space ☺️❤️

But wow less than 100 sq ft, that really blows my mind. Incredible. But kind of crazy for the price, no? Japan must be super expensive. Or it could be Tokyo. The only place I didn’t drink tap water as far as I remember was in Taiwan, my mother-in-law discouraged me to do it as it’s nothing like the water back home and you can get sick.

I think its cute! I agree that small spaces are perfect for people who don’t host parties and such. My old place was about that size but in Shizuoka city an only cost me 45,000¥!! Now Im on Nerima about 13 minutes from the nearest station but I have a loft, a separate toilet and bath, and a kitchen with a full fridge and a two burner stove all for 60,000¥! I really love my place and its peaceful this far from the station, but at the end of the day in Tokyo the most important thing for price is how close any station is, so if you like walking look for places far away and you can get more perks for less. I used a company call Kimiwillbe and they were SO GREAT! Highly recommend them!

I would get a white basket to put your hair stuff in instead of a bag.Might be easier to oick out what you want. Maybe you could also get another one of those drawer stands ( like the one in your closet) and have it to keep your hair dryer in and maybe put your kettle on top? *shrug* just a suggestion. Otherwise it is very well organized. It is healthy to learn how to keep your "stuff" to a minimum. You learn to have the necessities and realize you don't need *things* to make you feel fulfilled

If you want to use something other than white tack I use these little clear hooks which come with a tiny bit of adhesive that don't take off any paint/leave marks on your wall when you take them off! They come up on amazon if you type in "clear wall hooks" or "command decorative clips". They work super well and aren't too expensive either! :))

I love your apartment! I really feel like living in a small space and living alone is way less messy than sharing with people you may or may not know very well.
I lived in a pretty similar apartment in Coimbra, Portugal, that was also around 16m² (or maybe a little bit less) that was brand new, furnished, had a small balcony and was well positioned AND I only paid 190 euros (215 dollars) with all my living expenses (light, water, internet, etc) included. It was DAMN cheap and I loved living alone but I HATED cooking at home because the whole apartment would smell like food. I like yours better because even though it's only 16m², it has a more square shape so you can walk around more freely, mine was a freaking rectangle and I felt trapped whenever someone visited me. Those two windows also make it look more open.
Before that I also lived in another apartment that was a little bit bigger than the other one and the bedroom and kitchen were separated by a wooden sliding door and that made such a big diference! But alas I paid 320 euros (363 dollars), living expenses also included. The apartment was more convenient, and it was still cheap I guess, but those 215 dollars with expenses included were such a rare find, I felt really lucky.
EDIT: I really like these videos where you show us stuff while you film. It's so much better than a voice-over because I feel like you sound so relaxed and honest! Keep it up!

I think it's like the perfect size for an apartment. I live in a sharehouse so the kitchen and bathroom are bigger but my room is only 8m squared and it's plenty of space for me. I would love to live alone but in Australia we don't have many units of that size, and the ones we do have are much more expensive. for sticking the lanterns up I suggest little clear command hooks, that's what I use :) They are super common and easy to find here so I'm assuming they would be easy to find in Japan too tho I'm not certain.

You can get these white plastic hooks that stick to the wall, and when you’re done there’s a tab you can pull and they come right off without damaging the wall. They’re commonly sold under the brand name Command. Hopefully you’ll be able to find them in Japan or order them online. They work really well!

i'd like to live in a place that small just to force me to declutter all my stuff and be more proactive with minimalism. My apartment is around 600 square ft (in the US) and i feel like i have so much stuff comparatively to you and your place. i have more books on my bookcase than all the things you own! XD but i've always thought living in like a tiny house or a small compact apartment would be fun to do, as long as it was set up that everything would be convenient! like i'm not sure I could do the tiny kitchen - i think that would get on my nerves haha

And all of the 100 yen stores will have storage things you can pick up as you go along. That's part of the pleasure of making your own home, so no need to be in a rush, just enjoy the process.

  • @TheOneWifNoUsername

I loved watching this. I once lived in a small studio myself. This is better than a typical studio in the US bc it has separation. My studio was just one big open room with everything in it and a bathroom shoved off by the entrance. If I was up late it would disturb my husband, if he had to be up late and I was sleeping. You get the picture. While to me this space is rather small you seem to be using it rather well. Like another comment said some small wall shelves would be perfect to help store stuff. You could perhaps get a mini wall shelf/floating shelf for next to your little fridge so you can have you kettle and other cooking things off the ground a little. Maybe put the kettle ansdthe toaster together. And as for those ovens you can basically bake anything on the smaller side. Like a small batch of brownies or a small cake. Maybe some baked pasta. It just might take longer depending on how hot yours gets. I have a similar one at home that is basically just a mini portable oven and I use it a lot to heat frozen foods. Also perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches tbh. That’s about all I got to add. I hope helps some. I like your apartment. Very cute.

I keep my ketchup in the fridge. My bottle says to "refrigerate after opening". Same thing with jam. I lived with some people from Mexico (when I lived in CA), and they kept their jam in the cupboard. That might have been because they didn't read English. I don't know, but it is not safe. I feel like whatever works for you, DO! I also only have 1 stove top, and I live in the USA. It is frustrating when cooking. Especially for me, since my husband and I can not afford to eat out, so I manage to get the food out mostly hot. Rice is easy, because I can cook it and set it aside to steam some more in it's pot on the counter. I don't have a rice cooker, so I just have to do it manually. Sometimes I steam my veggies in with the rice. The important thing is that it's nutritious and tastes good. We can't drink the tap water here. I don't know what's in our water, but I don't trust it. The town is always putting stuff in the water. Where my Mom lives in Arizona, they put chlorine and fluoride. It's nasty! When her water comes out of the tap, it smells like your in an indoor swimming area. It's almost bad enough to burn your eyes from the fumes (I might be more sensitive than others to smells.). That shower-head would HAVE to go. Everywhere we move, I always bring a shower head of my own, because I feel like I'm wasting water and not even getting clean with the water going in all directions except for on me. I live in the middle of nowhere AZ, USA in a 1 room house. Our space is about 3 times bigger than yours, but it's myself, my husband and my 3.5 year old. Our place leaks only when the clouds gush rain and it's windy. I like this place though. My husband and I do not want a large place with lots of rooms. If we have a large place, then we would always be cleaning it (we have a toddler. They are always making messes.) and we wouldn't have time for fun stuff.

I had a second hand toaster oven when I was in Japan that was worse than that one. Same size, but it only had one heat setting (600W) and a timer which could run up to 15 minutes.
I baked a lot in there. Potatoes, pizza, cookies, bread. But to this day, I think the pinnacle of my baking skills was how I veganized my mom's Stollen recipe (German christmas cake), found fitting ingredients in Japan and baked two of them in the toaster oven by putting tinfoil on top after two minutes so it doesn't burn and then just resetting the timer over and over :D
So honestly, I think you can make literally anything in there, any baked goods you can think of, there's a way to make it work. :)

Hi Mikan! I really enjoyed your video! I also live in japan in a small apartment so I understand your struggle! The reason why the sharehouse cost more is because you don’t have to pay the moving in fee which can be up to 30万円 which can be a pain for people who are staying long but not that long (if that makes sense) another thing is for people moving to Tokyo is: the more central in Tokyo ie: inside the Yamanote line it can cost a lot more and also if you live in: Minato-Ku, Shibuya-ku, chuo-ku etc. I also live central and it’s amazing because everything is close!
