Angelina Jordan's performances are indeed a spectacle of elegance and grace. Sorry in missing your live this morning, Christi. Toby Gad is actually a German songrwiter/producer who is based in L.A. As for as why Toby selected Angelina? I was actually able to ask Toby online about how he found out about Angelina. He told me that he saw her performance of of Bohemian Rhapsody on America's Got Talent The Champions 2020 and he knew he had to work with her. They have already created 8 songs together, one of them is called Bad Valentine, which will be officially released September 20th, the same day of her Glendale concert at the Alex Theater. From an online article, Toby thought some of these songs would end up on her Old Enough EP. He even received high praise from the bosses at Republic Records when they heard the songs. However, in the end, none of the songs were used. This event actually caused him to have a nervous breakdown. After recovering from this, he felt he had to take more control of his songs and to produce and release them the way he wanted to.
After hearing a BBC radio interview with Toby that was posted on TH-cam, I sent him a question about the 8 songs that he did with Angelina. Were the 8 songs all his ideas or did she have any input in the creation of the songs? He replied back to me that Angelina had great ideas and was very inspired during their writing sessions. It is interesting that people compair her voice to other singers when you listen to all the vocals sounds she produces ,her ability to tell a story and engage her audience is part of what makes AJ her

Saint James Church in London, not LA. They recorded it while in London for a performance at the London Palladium.
Toby is reimagining his former big hit songs that he co-wrote in the past, with new, young vocalists, & he asked Angelina to do this one. I suspect he may wish he had asked Angelina to sing all the songs on the album, but I guess he has to give other new artists a chance. He said in an interview that the 2 0f them have co-written 8 new songs, the 1st of which is "Bad Valentine," which will be released on Sept 20, 2024. Christi, your Angelina reactions are some of the best out there & I really appreciate the background research you did at the beginning. Can't wait for the next one! The songs that they cowrote, including Bad Valentine were recorded 1-1/2 to 2 years ago but were not released. Hopefully after Bad Valentine the rest are released as well as other possible unreleased songs.

Unchained Melody (AJ, at the age of 17 performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Ceremony December 2023 in Oslo, Norway) I watched as Angelina Jordan stepped onto the stage, her presence commanding attention. The room hushed, anticipation hanging in the air like a delicate thread. She stood there, a young girl with an old soul, ready to weave magic with her voice. As the first notes of "Unchained Melody" filled the room, time seemed to slow. Angelina's voice wrapped around each word, infusing them with a depth that transcended mere lyrics. It was as though the song had been written for her, and her alone. The audience held its breath as she sang. Her voice soared, reaching heights that touched the heavens. Hi Christi. I've watched most of your reactions to Angelina expecially when She was younger and I loved'em all. Happy you're finally back to Her. I'm Danilo an Angel from Rome Italy. Have been for more than 4 years now. 99% of what I watch on Utube/ Tiktok and the other socials is about Her. We know that She took inspiration from all the grearest of the past 100 years. Billie, Amy, Adele, Elvis, just to name a few, but I disagree with the verb mimick many used to describe her earlier performances. I'd use the verb study. Since She blasted out I will always love you at the tender age of 18mo She has been absorbing like a dry sponge every single element, even some nobody else could see but Her, from each one of them to integrate it in what is now the Angelina's genre/ style. Missed the live but so nice to hear from you again. Angelina is a breath of fresh air for the art of music. Sometimes the world only gets a "one off" and I firmly believe that Angelina is one of those. We were graced with her and if you look at the whole picture, I don't think we get another one---ever. I could go into paragraphs on this but I will not, it is either seen/understood or not. Hope you listened to the entire EP. The lyrics were stunning as she told her story, wrote a song for her Angels, brought you into the songs on a personnel level as she was not only singing about her journey but also about the listeners lives as well.
"Bad Valentine" would be the best live performance I have ever witnessed if it were not for her performance of "Unchained Melody" at the Nobel Prize ceremony. Her choices, the way she meshed with the orchestra, were masterful but I really can't describe it with justice. Note: "Bad Valentine" is small venue with a violin, cello, and piano and Angelina sings it from the perspective of the bad valentine. I agree with you Christi. Angelina’s jazzy vocal style and back phrasing is what makes her unique. If she tried to change her vocal style just to try to be more commercial or contemporary than she wouldn’t be herself. She can still use that style in more pop type songs. I don’t think that would hold her back from popularity. To become more mainstream I think it’s a matter of promotion and exposure which has really been lacking. Even then with today’s highly competitive music industry there are still no guarantees but I still think she needs to stay true to herself.

This is a new and fantastic live version of the song, with the wonderful echoes of the church that make it even more magical her voice, I would listen endlessly to her wonderful and powerful voice with that incredible low register of her and those wonderful progressions, I admire her fantastic musical sensitivity more and more, it seems impossible, but every song, simple or complex, which she rediscover becomes a new and splendid song. For me she is simply unique and with an incredible melodic perception. I love this composed and passionate performance, it's absolutely healing for the soul but even so crossed by an incredible musical power and structure, I love when in the second part, the soft background accompaniment of the piano and cello gives a wonderful and silky backdrop at her incredible voice. 💛🧡❤

It should be quite a show with new music revealed for the first time. It's a small venue so every seat should be a good one. Toby is German. Toby chose Angelina to sing this song for his album Piano Diaries. He said she was the best singer he has worked with. That's high praise coming from him. Angelina is a beautiful enigma, fearless yet humble. I just love this young woman. For me, she is the GOAT at the ripe old age of 18.

In my not-so-humble opinion as a long time Angel the reason Angie is so much more impactful live is that she is constrained in studio recording but lets her inner genius flow when on stage especially with acoustic accompaniment. Watch how the musicians react to her, dating back to Ivan and Egil. The Angelina Jordan "genre" plays with rhythm, tempo, and articulation. It defines her. Actually, that's true about just about any song she turns to, she makes it a new song that always has some kind of emotive impact, you feel whatever she is singing about. Angelina with her collaboration with Toby Gad is becoming a serious combination of great songwriting composition and production. that will help Angelina move her vocal artistry to a greater audience for sure. I think Angela is really coming into her own at the age of 18. Her maturity level is off the charts and her unique vocal dynamics set her apart from a lot of the singers of today. She is definitely a singer that will never need auto-tune or any voice enhancements because they will actually ruin the performances that she does. Does anyone else feel a sense of movement through space while she sings certain phrases, something of a circular/spinning motion? This is particularly noticeable to me in this song, particularly during the bridge. I also noticed it in her song "Now I'm the Fool." If so, does anyone know how she achieves this effect?

there seems to be an increasing complexity of design and discovery when you zoom in on a even a single phrase or word or part of a word ... the tiniest of nuances must be a natural product of her unconscious self... something like how someone speaks with an accent with out meaning to... it's just natural... I marvel.

I’ve been subscribed for a long time now as I really appreciate your music knowledge & constructive comments. I also think Angelina is absolutely unbelievable. Another unbelievable artist that you reacted to some 12 months ago is Amira Willighagen, who you were keen to do more reactions on her more recent performances. Amira is now 20 y.o & doing her Batchelor of Music at Pretoria University & is singing more beautifully than ever before.

Actually, this is the second version in the church that was released. The first one was not a cappella in the beginning but had the accompaniment the whole time. Also, she changed the ending the second time, slowing it down at the end. I liked it better that way also. Be sure to listen closely to what is said at the end. They must have decided to leave that in the release. Great to see you again, Christi!

I wonder if September 20th might be significant in relation to those positions.
Looking at the live comments it's easy to pick out those who don't know AJ. They betray themselves in one of two ways. One, they will remark about what they think is a mistake Angelina has made (or a vocal mis-step). Or, two, they will say she should have done x rather than what she did. As if they are the musical genius instead of Angelina.
This may be the modern day replacement for Bert Backarack and Diane Washington, I have heard they have written 8 new songs that haven't been released

I will say I don't like that they instantly give away that this isn't completely live audio by putting in the sounds of shoe heels clomping on the floor while she's barefoot.
Angelina did at least 6/7 performances of this song . I think around 5 are live . The best one imo , is from the " Sofar " venue London .ps she often wears shoes in videos,but removes them before performing .
