Favorite thing about this song is knowing that Leslie was 100% singing to his daughter that wasn't yet born. He said that during Hamilton's part he was praying for his daughter, and by the time the shows were over he had said 500 prayers for her

He said that nit about the singing part but rather about what to do when Lin sings. Because he just didn‘t know what to do with himself.

Yo, I think the difference in how Leslie and Lin approach the song might be rooted in how they're both becoming fathers, but the similarity stops there. In the plot, Hamilton is having a son with a wealthy woman he's strategically married, and Burr is having a bastard child with the wife of a British General. "You have my eyes, you have your mother's name. When you came into the world, you cried and it broke my heart".
I almost think that how they never really reach that duet "oneness" is because they can't. It's a humbling experience for Burr, whereas Hamilton is just receiving confirmation that he's great- like you said, the stakes aren't as high.
Both their fathers weren't around, but Lin is standing and Leslie is sitting, and Eliza walks out at the end, but no one walks out for Burr.
    Just ugh, my heart.

Two fun facts about this song, one about lin and one about Leslie:
Lin: he wrote the song a week after he adopted a dog into the family. He said it just came to him. It’s such a sensible song and then he said it became a whole lot different after his son was born! I can only imagine how special this song is for him!
Leslie: in their run at the public theater he had to do something while Lin was sing his part of the duet, something that would separate them from the same space (the theater was way smaller). So he would lower his head a pray for his future daughter. That happened through his entire run on hamilton. Today Leslie has a beautiful little girl named Lucille, literally the answer to his prayers

I had the pleasure of meeting Leslie before Hamilton was even a blip on broadway. He is a really kind and generous man. I was in the city having lunch with some friends at an outdoor cafe and I think Rent was playing at the Forrest Theatre at the time. He had stopped into a local Wawa and brought about 12 hoagies and my friends and I got to witness him handing them out to a group of homeless people who were in the area. It really touched my heart and it was definitely something ill never forget

I think both portray their characters perfectly with their own unique voices: Leslie as Aaron Burr who is from a prominent family and well educated (elegant, silky, sleek) whereas Lin as Hamilton who is an uneducated illegitimate poor orphan (abrasive, unrefined). A brilliant production!

LMM said that his wife would sing this song to their little boy. When he was old enough to see the show, during that song he said to his dad, "That's the song Mommy wrote", or words to that effect. He was convinced his mom created that song, because she would sing it to him. :-)

Yeah, the problem with this duet is that it highlights just how far and away superior Leslie's vocal talent is compared to LMM. LMM is a talented rapper, writer, and composer, but he's outshined on pure vocal ability by just about every member of the cast. (Just my opinion; don't flame me.)

    • @kme06d

It is impossible to deny that Lin isn't as vocally gifted as the rest of the Hamilton cast - especially Leslie. In my opinion he makes up for it with his passion, but in this duet it becomes clearer just 'cause Leslie is there and he matches that passion Lin has with more of a vocal talent.

I personally love the difference between Hamilton and Burr's performance and message. Hamilton looks so much... sloppier than Burr because he is not afraid to show his joy and doesn't try to hide his thoughts or opinions. Burr on the other hand, while he is expressing his love always appears as though he is holding back and that plays out until The Room Where it Happens. Burr is potential and Hamilton is kinetic energy. I think both Leslie and Lin did a beautiful job.

There's another, deeply melancholy, layer to the song that I can't help hearing. I love this song. I think it's interesting with Leslie's approach to the song is one of almost bewilderment with Theodosia (he himself not a parent) whereas Lin's approach is one of more joy and pride (he is a parent). What has always made that more interesting to me is that it really rings right for the characters and the actors themselves. I feel their tones work better together once Leslie comes out of falsetto. I think a lot of men would be hard pressed to match the beauty of his tone in that space!

Leslie Odom Jr. did in fact become a father. His daughter, Lucille, was born in 2017. So I think for him, presuming him and his wife were trying for a baby during the run of Hamilton, he was kind of infusing his hope for his future child into that performance.

I think the difference in approach is due to family history, and it’s affect on how they see the future.
Burr, whose family legacy equals inheritance, is focused on what he can give his child in the future. Following the character’s theme- Wait for the things that I will do for my child, and see what she will do.
Alex, who has never had anything passed down to him by family, is focused on the enjoyment his child brings to life. Following the character’s theme- I’m not throwing away My Shot at enjoying my son, because look great he is right now.

I think Lin Manuel’s Alexander Hamilton is every bit as connected to his child. Odom’s Burr is in awe and he’s thinking for the first time ever about the stakes for others. Hamilton is in a space of delight and including his son in the scope of the dreams he already has for the new nation. And then there is the fact that we have one father singing to his daughter and the other to his son. Very different relationships - especially at the end of the eighteenth century.

  • @ZariDV
    @ZariDV 4 ปีที่แล้ว +18

You bring up such a good point that I never quite thought about regarding Lin and Leslie's approach to the song acting-wise. Leslie is playing a character that is cautious by nature and hesitant to make the wrong moves so he often chooses to either not make any moves at all or wait until the time is right where the right move presents itself. But you can't take that approach to raising a child. You can't sit back and not be active in raising the baby, you have to make a move at all times each day because every move you make counts and it needs to be done for the child's health, happiness and development. So it would make sense that he would be unsure, scared and cautious here because he's forced out of his comfort zone and has no choice but to act against what defines his character for a lot of the first half of the play. Meanwhile Lin is playing a character that is the polar opposite. Hamilton has experienced loss on such a deep level that he behaves as though he has nothing to lose and everything to prove. He's arrogant, bold and often reckless in his active pursuit of doing whatever it is he sets his mind to. Even when he has doubts it seems few and far between compared to Burr and he still manages to keep the same relentless energy toward doing everything. He is incredibly confident in his abilities and has a deep sense of pride. It makes sense that he will look at his child and simply be proud of what he's created and focus on what it means to be a father since not having his own father around is a big deal for him. He simply feels joy, pride and awe over seeing his son along with hope for Phillip's future that he's sure he'll play a role in creating (as a father and founding father).

Even though I may not be a parent now, or even in the future, I can feel how my parents felt about me, and how I feel about my younger siblings as a mentor or guide to them. So this song hits close to home, and I cry every time.
When I heard that LMM sang this song to his sons when putting them to bed, I feel like I would do the same with future young children in my family, kind of passing along a torch of love, happiness, mistakes, anger, and all emotional moments to come to make them stronger as a person growing up.

I am an ordinary non-theatre person who loves Hamilton. Thank you for these lessons on the craft of musical theatre. I knew nothing about the musical when I watched it on Disney. What struck me about this song was that the voices did NOT meld together. For me it added rather than detracted from the song because it emphasized - no, highlighted - the idea of two very different men, two different voices, in different circumstances having the same emotion. They will never come together. They will never meld.

Lin’s performance here really spoke to me, to be honest. Like Leslie is fantastic of course, but just. I love how speechless Lin is, how tickled he is. “Pride is not the word I’m looking for”, the man who is always sure of where he wants, where he’s going, and what he’s going to say is stopped in his tracks by the baby he wasn’t even sure he would get to meet after going back when he responded to Washington’s call. I love how rough he is in comparison to Leslie. It felt like one of the first times we got to see the real Hamilton. He’s not posturing, he’s not trying to be clever or bombastic. Just a quiet moment with the new thing in his life he can’t quite figure out.

    @Chickeny 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I always thought Lin's performance here was a mix of pride and awe. Hamilton has so much hubris, and the birth of Philip was the first time he loved anything or anyone more than himself.
Baby Theodosia was the gift of family that Burr had been missing since his family had died. He fell in love with a married woman and had to hide it until her husband died. But Baby Theodosia was truly his family in a way he hadn't felt in a long time.
...Well, that's the story that developed in my head from the soundtrack and movie, anyway.
    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

  • @cricket778

I have always loved this song, but get emotional watching it because both Burr & Hamilton outlived the children they’re singing to (Shipwreck, duel). I remember seeing/hearing this song for the first time and how happy I felt for him because this gave him the purpose he was looking for all the time!
He meant to make his parents proud, to almost atone for the fact that he got to live whilst they did not - but now it all falls into place for him, the birth of his daughter gives him something tangible to base all his efforts on - to create a great future for his baby girl, to give her opportunities he did not have and to one day sit back and watch in awe at the amazing things she will do with what he handed her...
Isn't that what everyone longs for? A purpose and a reason so that going through life's struggles and pains makes sense, so that we don't give up?
Love all the emotions he puts into this "sigh"

  • @vanitine

I love this! Like you said, Leslie's bewildered expressions and the uncertain way he's goes about it is stunning! And then there's Lin's anticipation and excitement, which in my opinion is fantastic as well. I think that those two aspects really complacent each other as far as their characters go. They're exact opposites but also parallels at the same time and it's brilliant! Burr is defiantly more cautious and hesitant while Hamilton is charismatic impulsive. They're both experiencing that awe factor that new parents share, but in their own completely different ways and its beautifully done!
