Fun fact: In this song Hamilton and Burr sing one line in unison. The only time in the show they sing the same notes, instead of a harmony because it's the first thing they agree on. Their love for their child.
And also another fun but sad fact (do I need to warn of a spoiler at this point? Anyway, spoiler coming): both of them are singing about their first-born children, and they both outlive those children. Burr's daughter Theodosia was on her way from South Carolina to NY to see him and her ship disappeared. She was his only acknowledged, legitimate child.
Fun fact: Lin's oldest son, Sebastian, is convinced that his mom (Lin's wife Vanessa) wrote this song, not his dad, because she would sing it to him every night. Lin said that if he ever tried to sing it, Sebastian would say, "No, that's Mommy's song, she wrote it".
Burr's lines in this song don't rhyme every line, or even every other line. I realize that it's not your fault for not catching it since you pause often to talk about the song (which I don't mind, keep doing it!), but he's almost rhyming every four lines. ”Dear Theodosia what to say to you" in the first bit is being paired with "I'm dedicating every day to you" in the next. Though there are some midway rhymes like "you knock me out I fall apart, and I thought I was so smart," it's also being paired with "you broke my heart" in the first stanza. This is contrasted by Alexander's almost immediate rhymes of "when you smile I am undone, my son" in his first line, and he continues to rhyme throughout his verse. Alexander goes for the rhyme, he takes his shot. Burr waits for it.
I also love how they say "I'll do whatever it takes, I'll make the world safe and sound" which is very Hamilton. And "I'll make a million mistakes, I'll make the world safe and sound" which almost foreshadows the mistake he made at the end with the purpose of keeping her safe.
This one is another example of the parallels between Burr and Hamilton and their lives. It's also a beautiful moment of calm before the big piece that ends the first act. (Non-Stop) You'll love that one for all the returning motifs!
The rhyme scheme in this song is actually still present in the opening verse - it's just spread out much more. Rather than rhyming every line or every other line, the verse lyrics rhyme every 4 lines or so ("say to you" then "every day to you", and then "it broke my heart" and "I fall apart").
Leslie Odom Jr. singing this song so incredibly beautiful, such an amazing singer and very deserving of his Tony award. Glad you are enjoying listening to this soundtrack. x
This song lets us see a softer side of Aaron Burr, the antagonist in the story, and shows some similarities between him and Alexander. The piano is really worth checking out, if you want to watch Alex Lacamoire tour the orchestra pit from the show.
What I like the most in this song is how Alexander's characteristic eloquence and lyrical creativity is completely (and intentionally) absent here. He's so blown away by Phillip that his rhymes become repetitive, as his mind is fixated on the one word that means most to him ("My son, look at my son... you outshine the morning sun, my son"). He also can't even find the right words to say ("pride is not the word I'm looking for, there is so much more inside me now."), and his rhyming patterns are haphazard or broken. The naturally verbose Alexander also has less than half as many lyrics as Aaron Burr here, the same Burr who told him to *talk less* and smile more... and it's because for once in his life, Alexander found something so special that he's at a loss for words, even though he "thought he was so smart."
I understand the reason Lin had for not adding the "Laurens Interlude" on the soundtrack, so it could be a surprise for those who watch the stage show, but it still makes me sad now that I've seen it that it's not on the soundtrack. Every time I listen I keep expecting the song to pop up, but it's not there. :(
I think I've told you this before, but in this long collaboration Lin writes the lyrics, sets the song style and creates the melodies and some of the vocal harmonies. Alex Lacamoire, the arranger and music director, gives it depth and breadth. Either of them would have earned a Tony for their individual contributions. The four of them (Lin, Alex, Tommy Kail (stage director) and Andy Blankenbuhler (choreographer) won Kennedy Center honors because of their seamless work together.
Chills every time with Dear Theodosia! Would love if you did a live stream watching the full production, especially after watching just the music being broken down.
@@JacobRestituto You won't be able to show it due to copywrite, what some have done (Jase_n_yo_face and Songs from a suitcase) have/are doing a live stream where you can watch along with them...basically pausing and then calling out the time stamp when you start up again.
The music is the first verse of this lullaby reminds me of a music box. Like you’d wind up for a baby when putting them to bed, just before you leave the room.
Next up there is a little song called "laurens interlude" that doesn't appear in the album so that its surprise when you first watch it. I highly recommend continuing on to "non-stop" and ignoring this little song. It isn't meant to be listened to without the performance so I suggested waiting for it (hamilton pun intended) until you watch the whole musical.
Sad fact: when they sing "You'll blow us all away" it's foreshadowing the fact that Burr's (the first singer), daughter, Theodosia, will die at sea. (she was actually at sea because she was visiting Burr with her 10-year-old son when they both died).
Oooh, I just realized; are you gonna react to any of the deleted songs? Because there's at least one that became fan favorite and internet sensation with everyone making covers of it... And that is a song called 'congratulations', and it's actually a part that's cut from the 'Reynolds pamphlet'. Amazing Renee Elise Goldsberry sings or rather raps the hell out of it! Unfortunately there probably isn't a version out there with good audio quality but still it would be nice to see you react to that :)
The piano in the beginning reminds me a lot of like Undertale lol Edit: also Lin studied Eminem (among other rappers) when writing the soundtrack I think

Alexander goes for the rhyme, he takes his shot. Burr waits for it.
"...you have your mother's name" rhymes with "when you came..." in the first verse.
I never noticed this and I love it. This is why I feel like doing a whole project on Hamilton just for fun!
I also love how they say "I'll do whatever it takes, I'll make the world safe and sound" which is very Hamilton. And "I'll make a million mistakes, I'll make the world safe and sound" which almost foreshadows the mistake he made at the end with the purpose of keeping her safe.

Aaron Burr is the protagonist in this story and I can't be convinced otherwise
This is a lullaby to the children, but also to the United States.
oh cool

It would be pretty interesting to hear the Hamilton Remix after this. Just to hear how these songs got changed up
